Next up: sewing and cake decorating. (gotta be a Renaissance girl, right)Vintage decorating books and old magazines make me week in the knees. Music If it's on vinyl and has a woman in a grass skirt and coconut bra on the cover, I probably have it in my collection. I'm a whore for Hawaiian, ELO and old rock records from thrift stores. I'm also a big fan of independent music. Luckily, New Orleans is full of great bands; I especially like SupaGroup, Rock City Morgue and Pleasure Club. On the not so local front, Juliette Lewis and the Licks, The Charms (Boston) and Broadzilla (Detroit) top the list. Movies I'd like to say I have cool, indie taste in movies but I would be lying. I like the classics: Brain Candy, Monty Python, Xanadu, Better off Dead, Shaun of the Dead, Star Wars (the old ones...), Tease O Rama, Orgy of the Dead, Drop Dead Gorgeous, Logan's Run, old Buck Rogers and Wonder Woman episodes, Flash Gordon (1980).... Television I am the last woman on earth without cable. I have only three channels: Fox, ABC and PBS and that is plenty for me. I actually lived without a television for several years. Most people think I am crazy. Although I admit I watch nothing but HGTV, Discovery and the History Channel when I visit my parents' house. Books I eat books like they are twinkies. My friends say I'm the fastest reader they have ever met. My library card is even starting to get thin in a few places. I read whatever tickles my fancy at the time. A lot of nonfiction: how-tos on home repair and graphic design. I am fascinated by city planning and why people think and act they way they do, so I like 'Asphalt Nation" and 'The Great Good Place." I'm a sucker for vintage books and magazines. I once ran across an excellent bowling photo book from 1955, and "The Encyclopedia of Bad Taste" is a perennial favorite. I also think everyone should read "Bunnicula" and own at least one Ed Emberly How to Draw book. My web site is http://www.pussycatmagazine.com . I recently left behind the 9 to 5 to brave the world as a self-employed writer. Writing is even harder than all the other jobs I've had, and I've had some dooseys. I have worked as a Bourbon Street bartender mixing hurricanes for the drunken masses, a fire-breathing exotic dancer, a graveyeard shift convenience store clerk (robbed at gunpoint, only once ) and salad bar attendant at a Midwestern Ponderosa Steakhouse Buffet. I've driven across country in a 1979 Ford Pinto twice. On the first trip, I was parked outside of the Corn Palace in Mitchell, S.D. Thinking I was pregnant when my period was two weeks late when my boyfriend told me he wanted to have a sex change operation. Life could only get better from there, right? It did. I live in New Orleans, in a 160-year-old house with two cats, one stray and a geeky computer networking engineer. I'm hoping to embark on some new adventures soon. Posted by Steffen Christensen Thu, 22 Dec 2005 17:23:00 GMT Web 2.0 is the thing to be these days, and we've just made a major pre-Christmas upgrade to bring us closer to the 2.0 mark. Basically, 23 doesn't do anything now that it didn't do before, but a lot of ajaxing makes a lot of actions a lot smoother: Fotonotes : This is the addition that comes closest to actually being a new feature: Now you can annotate photos directly on the photos rather than by commenting on the photo. Apart from that the system works just like commenting does now; if you can comment on a user's photo, you can "fotonote it". (First examples from mariavibe and oschlag ) Edit-as-you-go : Uploading multiple photos takes time, so why not use that extra time to organize your newly uploaded photos? Once the first file from a batch of files has been added to 23, you'll be able to edit words, tags and privacy status without interfering with the overall upload. Automagically optimizing your time spent at 23! Tag auto-completion : 23 now suggests tags while you're typing. For the moment the suggestions are based plainly on a search of all tags at 23. But expect the suggestions to improve soon... Photo page UI : This page has been ajaxed so everything happens smoothly and quickly within the page rather than through page reloads: Add and delete tags; add to or delete from album; add to favorites; editing words; and adding and deleting comments. That's all folks -- now it's in your hands: Start editing-as-you-go, organizing smoothly and fotonoting now! 3 comments | no trackbacks Comments Leave a response nuke edit Sebastien said 4 days later: How can I delete a footnote ? nuke edit Steffen said 5 days later: Fotonotes are deleted using or . Let's hope that 2006 will be a better one for the world, as weezer takes a step back from the limelight for a little while. ...the '05 holiday digital treat is in the pipeline, ready to go but waiting for a few tech/website things to be sorted out before its up and ready for your consumption. It should be a matter of days rather than weeks, so stay tuned. ...L.A. area peeps: here's your chance to do something fun for charity and watch weezer bassist Scott Shriner call out bingo numbers! Its the latest installment of Rock N' Roll bingo , a charity bingo series where rock stars, celebrities, and other cool cats volunteer their time and bingo refereeing skillz for charity. Scott will be MCing and calling out the numbers on the night of Jan 19th in Hollywood. Check the details here . Please note - this is not a musical performance - Scott will not be playing bass or any other instrument, aside from his, er, bingo voice. Come down for fun and to support the charity, and perhaps Scott's number calling will hook you up with a bingo victory! Take it away, Brian... "...Covering the Velvet Underground song "Heroin" for the movie "Factory Girl" has made me rethink how I approach music, it at least gives validation to an already known fact: music does not need to be sober. By "sober" I mean perfect, tight, or in the case of most modern rock music, uptight. Working on this project with Pat was a blast. There was no premeditated plan, no rehearsal, there was barely even a discussion of how to approach this seven minute ride. I was a bit nervous going into it because the song still needed to be approved by the film's makers, who were coming to the studio to meet us and probably also to see that their investment was not in vain. As far as I know they are satisfied and haven't changed their minds. No matter anyway because the lessons learned and the experience of recording with Pat proved to be invaluable. We started at ten in the morning and ended up using the fourth of fifth take. I really wanted to have a good version of the song to play the producers of the film before they arrived at two. We kept my tracking guitar and I re-sung the song trying to mimic Lou Reeds' phrasing word for word. Just as I finished they arrived and I was sweating bullets nervously waiting for approval. They seemed genuinely pleased and the only concerns at that time were that the song broke into a beat, which was different than the drumming of the Velvets' drummer Mo Tucker. Tucker did have an amazing feel, but she was no Pat, and Pat pulled out an "Only In Dreams" type crescendo that I think makes that aspect of the song better. Later, I got a call from the director telling me to re-sing the song using my own phrasing, "just go for it", he said. I did just that and threw in a little Dylan for good measure. My reservation going into this was that no matter how good it turned out, criticism would soon follow. You can't attempt a rock classic (especially a cult band like the Velvets) and not get a few sneers. But the important thing here is that maybe we might help turn a new generation onto this amazing art rock band and change the perspectives of a few unknowing listeners. If your music has steered too far from the aesthetic of the Velvet Underground you have to ask yourself, "What the hell am I trying to do?"..." -Brian ...The CFNY "Ongoing History Of New Music" episode from November featuring the story of Rivers is online for your streaming pleasure here . Check it oot! ...Vote for "Perfect Situation" on the TRL webpage ! Your vote counts and is mucho appreciated! Meanwhile, the single has risen to #4 on the modern rock chart , and is doing its best to catch up to its 900-pound gorilla big brother known as "Beverly Hills", which keeps popping back up near the top of the pop charts time and time again! The "Perfect Situation" video should be available on iTunes very soon. It's also coming to our streaming media page sometime soon, but we haven't heard exactly when yet. It's still available to stream on the Yahoo! Music pages. (best in IE, Firefox doesnt seem to like it). ...coming up in a little over a month: The Grammys . Thanks to all who wished me luck, and to Continental's staff for doing the right thing. Comments (27) 12/25/05 Holiday '05 greetings 12/25/2005 11:50:25 PM - by Karl Koch ...Everyone in weezer and all their support crew and staff wish you happy holidays, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa, and the very best holiday season. May it be filled with goodwill, peace, and good rock for all. Everyone wish good thoughts for all people and things this season...including those still trying to get on their feet after the major disasters of '05... Also including my still missing luggage, which sadly contains all the gifts I found in Japan for my friends and fam! D'oh! Keeping the fingers crossed that the luggage karma gremlins go my way... But no matter how it plays out...it's a lesson that always bears repeating - stuff is just stuff, even really expensive or uber cool stuff. Yes, even irreplacable stuff - whether it be lost by overstressed airlines during the holidays, or by natural disaster. But good health and good times with friends and family is REALLY where its at, and is better than any gift - or any supercool item scored in Shibuya that you may never see again. It's important to keep that in mind as we gather for holiday times. Best wishes to everyone! Mixed emotions all around. An awesome sense of triumph and success mixed with the sad goodbyes and the mystery of what the future holds. As Rivers returns to school in the spring and everyone takes care of personal business (some pretty majorly cool stuff!) for a while, yet continues to work towards a musical future nonetheless, only time will tell when the weezer machine will get back into full gear. Its not going to be entirely quiet around the weezer hood, not by a long shot. Everyone is planning on writing music, and indeed a good deal of songs have been already created while the band was still on tour this fall. Pat's even building a new home studio to better work on music. Also Brian and Pat are going to be recording a cover version of The Velvet Underground's "Heroin" and will actually be appearing in the in-production film "Factory Girl" about the 60's Andy Warhol scene, performing the song. And around these weezer.com parts, updates, overhauls, fresh stuff and a few suprises are on the horizon. (Its no secret that the site has some neglected corners that need a serious dusting off - this type of work and more is in the works). Im also happy to say that it looks like Santa will indeed be bringing you a present or 2 this year - but its not clear when exactly this will arrive in your, uh, digital chimneys - asap, of course, but its doubtful youll see anything on the morn of 12/25. Hopefully it wont be more than a few days late. Just so's ya know! Also, this live DVD is in the works. weve got the footage, now its a matter of putting it together. I dont have any info as to a projected release time yet, but it will happen in '06 for sure. CONGRATULATIONS to the band for a fantastic and successful 2005! And HUGE thank you's to all the crew, staff, local personel, and YOU, the fans, who helped make everything happen, from the tour dates to the travel to the interviews to the TV stuff, and everything inbetween.
