Riff-shredding, ass-shaking, louder-than-life Morningwood is a glorious hodgepodge of personalities, backgrounds and influences -- much like their NYC hometown -- but that's where the pigeonholing ends. "There's an attitude, this balls-to-the-wall feeling, you don't hear so much in New York these days," says Morningwood frontwoman Chantal Claret. "At one time there was a grittiness here with the local bands, a passion and energy, but now it seems pretty safe." Claret, who grew up in New York, is the youngest member of the group at 23. She met Pedro Yanowitz (who had played drums for the Wallflowers, Natalie Merchant and Money Mark before turning to the bass) at a birthday party in 2001. While Phil travels with the team for the entire Tour (and the week proceeding it), I have been at the office dealing with the media. Every year there seems to be more and more interest in Team CSC , and in North America a fair portion of that interest is directed at Cervelo. This means that most of my days during the Tour are spent on preparing information for the media, radio or TV interviews and making sure our (online) advertising stays up-to-date. This leaves woefully little time to prepare for my other major goal for the Tour, which is to gather all our international distributors in France to discuss 2006 products. The idea was to hold this meeting in Pau, as the team would be in that city for four days but unfortunately Pau does not have that many hotels and the Tour occupies all of them. However, nearby Pau is the city of Lourdes, and with 5 million visitors a year it has an enormous number of hotels, second only to Paris. When I told Phil we would hold the meeting in Lourdes, having been there in 2003 during the Tour he told me that it was the armpit of France. What I didn’t know was that he was being extremely generous. I can honestly say I have never seen a city so messed up, so unbelievably sad yet hilarious at the same time. No description will do it justice, but imagine it sort of being like Vegas, except that it is supposed to be a religious destination. And imagine every gambling chip is in fact a plastic statue of a saint. Its rows and rows of hotels are force-fed with rows and rows of buses unloading rows and rows of old, crippled, salvation seekers. And during their stay they are gauged every step of the way, from the dirty, expensive, closet-sized hotel rooms in their “four star hotel” to the jerry cans of “holy water” to the made in China sainthood contraptions that “snow” when you shake them. There seems to be absolutely no connection between what is going on today and the original reason this town became a sacred place. I have to admit to not having read the entire Bible, but I am fairly sure it does not say anywhere that “Ye shall prey on innocent, desperate, ill people for your own economic benefit”. Whether believers or not, any sane person will have to come to the conclusion that regardless of its past, it seems God has now deserted Lourdes. This all however is not the worst. The worst is that in the entire town, there is not a decent meal to be found. Imagine being in France for a few days and not being able to get one passable meal. Imagine a pizza that is submerged in oil. I am not exaggerating, this pizza did not have a single square inch of crust or toppings punch through the bath of oil it was lying in. And when the waitress was unable to hold the plate level and half of the oil ran off the plate (to the delight of the recipient of the pizza and the dismay of the recipient of the boiling-hot oil), the only reaction was an uninterested “huh” and away the waitress went. No “sorry I burned you”, no “sorry I wrecked your shirt”, also no surprise anywhere at our table. It’s what we had come to expect in Lourdes. To really show you how bad it was, I have to make a confession. On our last day in Lourdes, we were so disgusted by the food that a normally unthinkable thought popped up. We came to the conclusion that the best meal we could get would be at the local McDonald’s, and so despite our health-consciousness and general eye for fitness we actually had dinner in France at McDonalds. Of course, this meal was also disappointing, as the advantage of worldwide uniform food is that it also provides a worldwide uniform let-down. In one area though the McD’s in France has a leg up on North America; it sells beer. It’s quite a strange sight, but it seems to be quite normal here. It piqued my curiosity and I wonder if you can also buy a beer at a McDonald’s drive-through. I planned to try that out the next morning on my way to the airport, but unfortunately I ran out of time. I envision myself pulling up to the window and ordering a beer, only to be told “Sorry, we do not serve beer in the drive-through”. And just as I think sanity is restored in this part of France I will hear “?? before noon”. The one redeeming feature to Lourdes is its location. It is a great starting point for rides covering most of the Pyrenean climbs made famous by the Tour, including the Tourmalet, the Aubisque, the Col d’Aspin and Hautacam. But my advice, try to find a hotel in one of the little towns outside of Lourdes for the real experience, you’ll be glad you did. My job in Lourdes was to show our 2006 model line to our distributors, and have them try out the Soloist Carbon so they can speak from experience when they talk to their dealers about it. But the first day was spent at Paris-Charles De Gaule airport as I had a six-hour lay-over before my flight to Pau. Normally such a lay-over would make me very cranky, but in this case I loved it. One of the airport restaurants had TVs and the Tour was on, so while the food was “imported from Lourdes” if you know what I mean, watching the stage to Ax-3 Domaines on French TV more than made up for it. Although I tend to get frustrated watching OLN , I had forgotten how big the difference is with real cycling coverage. French TV showed the stage without any interruptions for commercials, and every time they showed a group of riders they mentioned all riders who were in it and listed all the names on the screen. What a concept, it was actually possible to follow the whole race and everything that happened without having to keep an eye on the internet! Also little things like calling all groups out on the road by the main rider in it, rather than the useless Chase 1 and Chase 2 where even Phil and Paul cannot always figure out who is where was much appreciated. It is a mystery to me why OLN won’t negotiate to get this part of the feed for North America, it must be possible to opt in for the “graphics package” of the coverage. Before I get all sorts of angry e-mails, I know OLN can’t help it that it has to run ads whereas a public broadcaster like France2 doesn’t have to, but that doesn’t change the fact that watching it on French TV is a much better experience. So I would recommend to any cycling fans that they travel to France for the Tour, even if it is just on TV. So on that Saturday in Paris, I saw Lance and Ivan putting some time on their rivals, and made it just in time to my connecting flight. The first days in France I spent with the media, and on the Monday the editor of one magazine, his photographer, myself and two bikes squeeze into a rental car in search of a good spot for photos. The photographer knows of a great spot, but it is about an hour away so we get to have a pretty long discussion on materials, geometry, the pro peloton and other such topics. Having finally arrived at the special spot, it turns out to be raining on this side of the mountains and so without a single shot we turn around. We settle for the Col d’Aspin instead and while we’re shooting some photos a car stops right in front of us. Out jumps a fellow and he asks me if I am Gerard. We all think this is pretty funny as that obviously doesn’t happen every day. Take that, Phil! Turns out he is a proud P2K owner from Madison, WI, home of Trek. He has his wife take some pictures of the two of us with the Soloist, which again is a rather experience but he’s a very enthusiastic man and we have a nice chat. The CycleSport guys meanwhile think it is hilarious and keep on taking shots of this scene, so who knows it may appear in the next issue. Surely more than this P2K owner had bargained for. That evening, just like the evening before, I drive to Pau to meet with the team. This time I sit down with B.S. Christiansen, the team building expert of the team. Every time I visit the team I make a point of talking to him, as he brings a very interesting perspective to things. Oftentimes these talks have nothing to do with the team, we chat about our personal lives, Cervelo, off-shore production and why fighter pilots have to realize they are nothing without the guy flying the refueling plane. I then go to pick up the German distributor from the airport and at 2am, 30 minutes earlier than the night before, I hit the pillow. The next morning I once more make the drive from Lourdes to Pau and on to Mourenx for the start of Stage 16. Bjarne has been nice enough to take some time out of his busy schedule to chat with the distributors, while the strangest sight of the morning is Luke Robert’s Soloist Carbon, which sports a disc wheel in the rear. Asked to explain, it turns out that the mechanics asked him the night before what spec he would like for this stage over the Aubisque. As a joke he answered “a disc wheel with a 27t cog”. With these mechanics, you have to be careful what you wish for, and it shows nicely how relaxed the atmosphere in the team is. We briefly entertain the idea of having Luke start with the disc, just for the fun of it, and I offer to pay the fine. Usually an infraction like hanging on the team car or taking on bottles where it is not allowed carries a 20 second penalty and a 200 euro fine, and Luke doesn’t care about the 20 seconds to go with the 3 hours he is behind Lance. But it turns out that an equipment penalty such as illegal components or weight carries the penalty of immediate disqualification from the event, something which would put a fairly significant dent in the atmosphere so we decide against it. The riders leave for the start while we leave for Lourdes once again. While I have individual meetings with some, the others take a Soloist Carbon out for a spin. This is the fun part of the trip, as every journalist and every distributor comes back from their rides the same way: with a huge grin on their faces. It’s fun to see their reaction, of course the distributors know our products pretty well so they were expecting something as fast as the Soloist and as comfortable as an R2.5, but even they are still surprised when they actually experience it. Journalists are usually a skeptical bunch, and they should be if they are any good. But they too can’t believe this bike and can’t find anything wrong with it. I have to admit that while it is a great feeling to see riders win a Tour stage on a Cervelo or watch Basso come second in the overall, nothing beats the rush of having people get off your newest creation and just gush. After all, that is what we do, we design bikes. We cannot control how fast the riders are going to go once they’re on it. It’s also fun to hear what the industry is saying now about our bikes. When Bjarne Riis decided to use Cervelo bikes at the end of 2002, many thought he was crazy and some even predicted the demise of Cervelo. Now barely three years later people are congratulating us on having the smartest and best-looking bikes in the peloton. Only months ago some mechanics from other teams would joke that the SL in P3 SL stood for “Still Learning”, now even they seem to realize that they have made the biggest mistake when they “Stopped Learning” and let new technology pass them by. Just yesterday the unthinkable happened; a mechanic from another team (sponsored by a very, very reknowned Italian bike brand) asked Phil if he could buy a Soloist Carbon. That evening, as I walk back to the hotel with Peter, the German distributor, somebody stops me on the street and asks “Are you Phil White?” Take that, Gerard! I guess Phil and I are even now. Peter and I find this pretty funny and I hope a simple no will get me out of the situation. But he then asks if I am Gerard, and it turns out that this gentleman is also from Wisconsin and rides a P3. We have a nice talk and it turns out his wife is looking for a new bike, I suggest she gets the P3 Carbon to one-up him but he seems to think she should get his P3 so he can get the Carbon. I hope she wins or if nothing else, that they both get P3 Carbons : ). The next morning Phil and I have a meeting with the team, and we present our ideas for new equipment for the next 24 months for the team. Now that the Soloist Carbon and the P3 Carbon are done, the team is confident they will have the fastest equipment of the peloton for the years to come. Phil and I also realize that it will be difficult to come up with significant improvements, so it is important to take a long-term look at research and development. The first development that will come up will be the new Bayonne, which will be a pretty amazing frame. While it won’t help the team immediately due to the weight limit (with the Soloist Carbon already at the weight limit and fully aero, there is no need for a lighter but non-aero frame), we want to make sure we’re ready if the UCI decides to lower the weight limit. The rest of the day is pretty uneventful as I finish up my last distributor meetings, and that evening after the infamous visit to McDonald’s I muse that it is a shame I didn’t get to ride while down there. Next thing I know, Simon (the UK distributor) and I are putting together everything so I can ride up Hautacam the next morning. When surrounded by these giants of the Tour, it would be sacrilegious not to climb at least one of them. In 1996, Bjarne Riis won atop Hautacam (hence the photo : ) so it only makes sense to pick that climb. Plus, it’s the one closed to Lourdes. I have no pedals as I already returned my loaner set to the team, so I will have to use Simon’s shoes and pedals. I also borrow his tools and jersey, just in case the one Cervelo jersey I have is not warm enough. He tells me not to worry, that is was pretty warm this morning when he roe, but that wasn’t at 5am. Finally I have the Soloist Carbon and all my stuff ready, and at 10pm I go to sleep, the first time this tip I am in bed before 1am. But of course I can’t fall asleep, there is a punter torturing the piano downstairs, outside people are chanting and I can’t resist the urge to watch the recap of today’s stage on Eurosport. I finally fall asleep at 2am, the alarm goes at 4:55am and I don’t exactly feel fresh as a daisy. When I get to the lobby of the hotel I realize Simon and I have made one significant miscalculation. I look outside and it is still pitch and pitch dark. We figured that in mid-summer it would already be twilight at this time, but it turns out we were as wrong as Bob Roll trying to predict a stage winner. I decide to ride anyway, and so I start following the instructions Simon has given me to get to the base of Hautacam. The ride through town is easy enough, but outside there are no lights whatsoever, and there isn’t much light from the moon and the stars. Rolling along I remember having read there are bears in this part of the Pyrenees, not a very helpful thought right now. I imagine bumping into one on the road, and I don’t think I would ever see it coming. Then I get to an intersection Simon never mentioned, and I cannot read the signs as it is too dark. I wait a little while in the hopes of having a car approach so I can see the signs in their headlights, but there is obviously no reason for anybody around here to drive around this early. So I take a gamble and go straight, but soon hit another intersection. Here I can read the signs, but none mention Hautacam, I turn around and try another route, but unfortunately I never find Hautacam. Eventually I turn around, by now a little light has started to come up. Riding along a long straight road I have a strange sensation. I remember clearly that this road was slightly downhill and with a tailwind an hour ago, but it again feels slightly downhill with a tailwind now. This bike just wants to go. This is the first time I ride a Soloist Carbon since I rode the Giro prototype, which some of the Team CSC riders found a bit too stiff vertically. The new lay-up seems to solve that issue completely, as everybody raves about how comfortable the bike is now and I have to agree. It’s difficult to have a final opinion just based on a 90 minute ride, but so far I can only agree with the distributors and journalists. I think it is finally time for me to replace my trusted SuperProdigy with a Soloist Carbon. I get back to the hotel, pack my bags and Simon and I are off to the airport. In the last minute hectic we forget to go through the McDonald’s drive-through to find out whether or not they would serve us beer. But it’s always good to have yet another reason to return to France one day. Hopefully next day, and for more than four days. Vive la technologie. So my apologies for the delay, here is my Monday blog, keep in mind that this is the day before that fateful team time trial, when the sun was still shining and Dave was still in yellow: I go with CSC mechanic Christophe to the race today. Its pretty neat being in yellow as people are honking and holding up their fingers for number 1 as we drive along. It’s a pretty tight-knit world for the team personnel on all of the teams and they know each other pretty well, so they are quick to congratulate. It’s also great for David that he is in Yellow on the 4th of July. As we continue to the start and I’m ranting to the baggage people about my bags still not arriving, Christophe notes that I’m now wearing a complete team kit (including some shorts that he doesn’t even have) and he smells a rat. He figures that I did not bring any clothes at all, and this was my scheme to get the full team clothing kit. He notes that I should stop the game now because it will be embarrassing if someone actually calls on my cell phone while I’m having my “pretend” rant at the baggage people in Paris. I sheepishly admit I’ve been taken care of pretty well now by both the Team and CSC people directly. However, I’m still missing a few pieces of team kit so I have to find a way to keep him quiet for a few more days so I can work them out of Carsten. Air Canada is now saying that my “fake” luggage originally scheduled for delivery today can’t be delivered until tomorrow. That’s the fourth date I’ve been given, so we’ll see. 12:30: The race starts and I’m in the second race car with Alain Gallopin (FR) the Directeur Sportif- and Christophe (BE) the mechanic. Both of these guys were here last year so I know them both pretty well, but this is the first time I’ve been in the car with Alain. Being in the car with Alain is like being in a publicity whirlwind. He’s been a DS for 10 years with FDJ , Mercury, Coast/Bianchi, and CSC for the last 2 years. Prior to that he was the soigneur for Laurent Fignon, after a bad crash in the early 80’s ended his career. Alain seems to know everyone, and he likes to have fun. Other team cars are always pulling up alongside and chatting; one of the journalists on a motorcycle rider pulls up alongside and does an interview, France2 TV calls on the cell phone for his opinion on something, etc. Of course, all of this happens as the cars whip side-by-side down narrow, winding, 2-lane, French roads at 60-80 kph. 13:25: Bjarne, who is the DS in the lead car, needs a break and we zig-zag at great speed up through the team cars to take his spot at the front. If we were in a breakaway, we’d go up the road to support the guys in the break. But with us in yellow, I doubt that will happen. The wind may be a factor today, but not a big one. After we turn at Cholet, Alain expects it to come from 7:30 direction. A couple of reporters call Alain about whether the Team will repeat what we did at Paris ?Nice last year where CSC used their Soloist bikes to devastating effect when they switched into Team Time Trial mode and destroyed the field. That’s unlikely to happen today with our current position, and the fact that all of the other teams will really fight it. Alain (or Gallo as he’s known) loves to animate the crowds. If they look particularly bored, we whip through town with the horn blowing looking like a wedding parade and waving to the crowds to get everyone off their seats. Later, he adds a hilarious yell of “Vive la France” to anyone holding a French tri-colore as we pass. It’s really funny; maybe you have to be here.) The Gendarme on the motorcycle in front of us thinks we’re completely crazy but he’s laughing too, and you can see him pointing over his shoulder at “those nuts in the CSC car” when he speaks to other Gendarmes. Life with Gallo in the second car is never dull. 15:00: 110 km at Macaire du Bois- We are traveling through fields of sunflowers on one side and vineyards on the other. One of those classic French postcard scenes. The gap to the 3 rider break is starting to come down from 5 minutes to 4 minutes as Quickstep and Davitamon come to the front to take over from CSC who hauled everyone along since the start. 15:20: Montreuil-Bellay: There are some nice castles here and from Saumur up the Loire to Azay-le-Rideau. Nice area. We roll into Tours on the same route that they follow for the finish of the Paris-Tours race. It’s a long 3km straight up to the finish, and the sprinters make the most of it. Boonen wins and McEwen is disqualified in an incident that results in much discussion over coffee and drinks after dinner. It’s a short 10km drive to the hotel so it looks like an early evening. Since we are in a big city, I take the opportunity to do some shopping including buying chargers for my phone, camera, and other equipment to replace that in my phantom baggage. And some underwear, so I don’t have to wash the one pair that I arrived in every night in the hotel sink. Then, just as the mechanics all go to sleep, I start up my laptop to upload some photos to the Media Center. I was also planning to write more in this diary, but by the time I got around to doing that the “early night” that I expected had turned into 01:30 in the morning. Off to bed. WHAT the Phuck? A local Chicago theater company, Hell in a Handbag Productions restaged last weekend their new musical “Scarrie” a “parodage” (parody + homage) to Steven King’s 1976 horror film about teenage abuse and telekenesis. Listen to this soundseeing tour of their opening night, and all the really great backstage interviews. Whats really remakrable was how David Cerda picks up on the genre of the 1970’s broadway musical (Think Jesus Christ Superstar) and references it over and over again in the show. The “Plug it In” number carries a lof of the same frenetic intensity that “What’s The Buzz” from Jesus Christ Superstar does. The hilarious references, the superb costumes and THE SHOES (yes the shoes are fabulous) almost steal the show from the wonderful ensemble work done by Ed Jones as the insane christian mother Margaret White and Joey Steakley in the title role. Merrie Greenfield cracked me up as Mrs. Snell, the drunk mother of Sue Snell, the confused anti-hero in the film. You’ll forgive the crappy sound and audio feedback because everything else in this show is hilariously fun. But of course I’m not unbiased, because if you’ve been listening to our podcasts you’ll recognize a lot of the same guests (David Cerda, Link Pinks, Merrie Greenfield) on this show. A LOT of them have been in countless Feast of Fools live shows and I truly love these insane people and all their outlandish over the top shows.
