How do you thrive in the shadow, substantial and arena-sized, of a group that has sold over 35 million albums? If you're Mike Shinoda of Linkin Park, the answer is: shine your own light. Shinoda is half the vocal firepower of the multi-platinum, Grammy-winning band Linkin Park, trading diaphragmatic diatribes with singer Chester Bennington and infusing the searing alternative rock with equally intense hip-hop. From album to album, Shinoda and his bandmates have garnered a reputation based on their appetite for striking new ground. On his first outing alone, Shinoda is ready to show people that he is still hungry. Shinoda's rap roots have always had to share space with other elementsuntil now. Fort Minor is a wholly unique, unadulterated hip hop album, owing as much to Shinoda's polished lyricism as his musical adeptness. The variety of themes, styles, and moods he creates make this "side project" likely to do much more than simply satisfy existing LP fans; it threatens to expose Shinoda as a rap devotee who is as at home in hip-hop as he is in the cross-genre hybrid of Linkin Park. The Rising Tied, the much-anticipated debut of Shinoda's Fort Minor, will be released by Machine Shop Recordings/Warner Bros., in Fall 2005. Executive Produced by Jay-Z (who collaborated with Linkin Park on 2004's Collision Course), The Rising Tied is produced and mixed by Shinoda, who wrote every track, played nearly every instrument and "slaved over every detail." While Shinoda chose the name Fort Minor to reflect the dynamic between opposites — something big and strong vs. something small and slight (or musically dark) — the name of the album is also a play on words. All of the guest artists on The Rising Tied, says Shinoda, are coming up together in the music world. Among them are Machine Shop acts Styles of Beyond and Holly Brook, as well as Common, John Legend, Kenna and Black Thought (of The Roots), among others. While remaining an essential shard in the mosaic of Linkin Park, the desire to create songs that resonated with his youth as a hip-hop producer and MC led Shinoda to write, then record, a progression of hip-hop-rooted songs. As they began to coalesce into an album bearing Shinoda's solo imprimatur, he also felt it was essential to keep it "organic," making his own samples and breakbeats with live instruments, and avoiding sequenced keyboards. The Rising Tied, channeling some of the signature dynamics and frustration of Linkin Park, reveals a more personal range of themes slagged inside a distinctly hip-hop crucible. Not to say that it's an entirely homogenized collection. On the first single, "Believe Me," excerpts from a decaying relationship tremble over a seismic breakbeat, infused with Latin percussion and a cello-bass line that reflects Shinoda's love of classic rock. "High Road," bouncing to Billy Joel-like piano progressions, adopts a humorous tone even as it gives the finger to someone who once told him to "stick to keyboards, don't rap." More funny business comes into play in "Remember the Name," with Shinoda transforming a traditional rapper's brag into a subtler call for respect, all done in the third-person. What's the formula for success? Shinoda answers, in a walking tempo, "This is 10% luck, 20% skill, 15% concentrated power of will, 5% pleasure, 50% pain, and 100% reason to remember the name." Another song that shifts traditional perspectives is "Where'd You Go?," a lament for those on the road as felt through the experience of those left behind. Shinoda warns, "'Where'd You Go' makes my wife cry every time she hears it." On "Right Now," inspired by Robert Altman's iconoclastic film Short Cuts, Shinoda, Black Thought, and S.O.B. offer a hodgepodge of scenes, invoked to the rhythm of a chopped-up piano loop, which stitch together disparate lives during any given moment. Home-town pride inspires Shinoda's unexpected and highly personalized picture of Los Angeles in the candid "Back Home," while sarcasm drives the irresponsible zeitgeist of "Petrified," a precarious anthem built on swagger, fear, and the heaviest beat since Ice Cube's "Wicked." Clearly, the most unique song of this album — or any album, for that matter — is a rap-flavored recollection of the U.S. internment of Japanese citizens during World War II. "Kenji," featuring the voices of Shinoda's aunt and father who were interned in the U.S. during the 1940s, paints a bleak picture of those who lost everything after being thrown into what were known then, euphemistically, as "relocation camps." Shinoda explains, "I went to the Japanese-American National Museum in L.A. last year, and it reminded me of all the stories my family had told me, how they were put into internment camps here in the U.S., not because they had done anything wrong, but simply because they fit a profile. I had to write a song about it." With Fort Minor and The Rising Tied, Shinoda appreciated the chance to tackle a new theme outside the normal subject matter of Linkin Park. Tackling big goals seems to be Shinoda's modus operandi. Notwithstanding an expectation to pursue a career in the visual arts, Mike decided instead to become a musician while working toward his B.A. in Illustration from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Having already taken ten years of piano lessons, he first began to work as a hip-hop MC and producer. In the mid-1990s Shinoda joined with guitarist Brad Delson, turntablist Joseph Hahn, drummer Rob Bourdon, bassist Phoenix and vocalist Chester Bennington to form Linkin Park. The band's debut, Hybrid Theory, became the worldwide ..1-selling album of 2001, earning a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance ("Crawling") and various other awards. Its subsequent albums — Reanimation, Meteora and Live in Texas — have continued to widen the band's fan base and critical acclaim; all together the catalogue has sold upwards of 35 million albums. On July 2 in Philadelphia, Linkin Park performed as part of the African aid/debt relief effort Live 8, to a live audience estimated at nearly one million people. Mike Shinoda's personal philanthropic efforts are growing as well. In the past five years, he has started a scholarship at his alma mater and been involved in groups such as United Way, AIDS Project L.A., Densho, the Japanese American National Museum, Arthritis Foundation and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Last year, Linkin Park launched Music For Relief, an organization to aid the rebuilding of Southeast Asia; the band played a sold-out show in Los Angeles to support the cause, raising over $2 million for relief efforts. I'm just a writer.. maybe something more, so before you flow, and know not but one, I'l soar, thats me, in my language, repeating endless lines of this dreary night, where inside I hold a fight, that might explode into rage on this page, and I look so Pretrified.. I may have lied... and then I sighed, but before then, I used to be an empty bottle, laying on that side walk, where I do not but talk, and stalk my prey, my senses do more than identify that lonely chalk on that wall, nothing but graffiti, instead of love in this city of juveniles, of lonesome with the human next to me I move so quickly, I am not safe, but lost in this world of me and that wandering ghost, where in my eyes, I see a host for that 8 o'clock show down Fort's Street, in this Minor occassion, I speak no lie with this, I bide time to say that this was that kid from that one city under neon skies..... My life goes on with no limit to the ground I seek shelter under, and I have no remorse for this word of thought, this was Kid Oz-E..... young and dumb, with only a bad memory in him.. to this neighborhood, to the ones I love, to the ones I hate, to the ones I can't stand, to the ones I know..................... this is me ALONE ♥ Jan 10, 2006 08:32 PM i'm so glad you decided to put Where'd you go on here......it's a great song off your record, and i love your new album, it honestly has to be one of the best albums i heard in a while. He liked the idea of lechery, the whole idea of it. I suppose we all have our own definition of lechery. Dirk's head was full of Sci-Fi comic book heroines with giant breasts and tear-drop asses. It was also full of far too much live KISS footage and Bad Company songs. But it went well beyond that. He wrote on his pants--spasmodic phrases--things like, BROWN, PETRIFIED RAGE!!, REMEMBER THE ORANGE GLOW!!, FURIOUS SPHOOG TUNES!! I saw him last Tuesday, patching his canoe in the front yard. He'd smeared grass clippings into the resin by accident. The fiberglass wasn't staying down. It went wherever his trowel (a stick) went. And he was saying to me, "When I get older I'll be one of those guys on the front porch yelling at kids and hooting at the chicks going by." "Leaning forward on your cane." "Right." "With shit in your diaper." "Hey!" he said with mock ferocity. "Leave my dreams alone." Resin-impregnated fiberglass strands wafted against his leg. "Dreams like the Norsky whore?" "She wasn't a whore!" But I could see that she was. In a non-violent way, Dirk considered all women to be saucy little hookers of one type or another. The ones who denied it were simply frigid, saucy little hookers, who lied to themselves, and everybody else. Usually, listening to other guys talk about sexual exploits turns my stomach slowly. Not to be prudish or anything, because I don't give a damn what they do to each other as long as there's consent and I'm not a part of it. It's just that Dirk's eyes would bulge, and he'd get this weird tick where he'd stretch his neck and look at you like a fish in a fist when he really got going on the topic of a woman's ass. Which comes back to the story of the Norsky Whore, who is, technically, not a whore. If I remember it right, she spoke four languages and, according to Dirk, had one beatific ass. Anyway, Dirk was on his way to Eastern Europe, via Amsterdam. After the airport, at the train station, he stowed his ever precious, life encompassing duffle in a locker. Within one day Dirk would turn 30. He had some half-psychotic notion that he needed to "fuck a whore" before he turned 30, because after he turned 30 he had vowed to become the son that his mother always wanted, not the irresponsible megalomaniac that he was. And fucking a whore on the day before his 30th birthday was going be the gateway of sin through which he would pass as he cleansed himself, in Amsterdam. Europe's own sin city. It seems that Dirk had reached a cross roads. And as usual, he followed the road of the misguided, mildly evil miscreant. He rationalized his plan with the knowledge that Kerouac would on occasion seek out a prostitute, which, according to Dirk, meant that he was in good company. Back to Dirk loading his duffle into a train station locker--I will give him this: Dirk was pure enough of character to know that he was a loser, simple and straight forward. Not only that, but he hated himself for it and simultaneously loved every minute of the entire, explosively hilarious paradox. I'll grant you he's twisted. But it's as true a twist as you'll ever see. Anyway, enough lionizing the loser. In scuffed, clownish boots and torn, written on clothes he headed off to a "coffee shop" to smoke some coffee. But Dirk forgot something about himself--he's a tight-wad mother fucker. And he blew a fair amount on "coffee." Which left him with only 15 bucks in his pocket (he didn't even consider trying to get more cash as this trip was "budgeted"). After ogling ass all over the street for an hour, he finally honed in on one woman in particular. Although this was not part of the story as he related it, I imagine his neck was stretched to full extension as he gaped at her boobs from the back corner of his left eye and offered her the fifteen bucks hoping she'd suck him off cut rate. No deal. Now things began to look grim--it seemed Dirk would not get to "bang his strumpet" before he turned thirty. Having set this goal for himself, and seeing it so clearly as the only way to go, he faced the stark reality of his loserdom. To fail in this matter would be bad for his future. The ramifications of failure would reverberate throughout the rest of his life. But he was a loser anyway, so he turned and followed the flow (which quickly became a line) of stoop-shouldered chicken chokers into a large grey building with girls dancing in the windows. As he and his horny, frog-eyed compatriots shuffled through dank, sound-dampened corridors, young women (possibly girls) reached out to them, beckoned them. Dirk shuffled faster. Somewhere along the line there he decided that all he really wanted to do was drool over some hot stripper while he smacked his monkey against a pole. Which was all he could afford, anyway. It was a resolution of sorts. He found his booth. You know what it smelled like, and if you don't so much the better for you. There wasn't much room. Over in the corner sat a chair with a small table by it. On the table sat a box of tissues, under it, a wastebasket. He turned to the control panel on the wall and saw that there were names next to buttons: Jackie, Lola, Sophia, etc... You get the picture. Now, Dirk was never big on doing things the way they were supposed to be done, nor was he big on patience. So, he had a look at the instructions, decided they were far too complicated and dumped a few guilder into the machine. He paused and pressed Lola because Jackie sounded a bit dikey to him and Sophia reminded him of Sophia Loren. He did not want to see Sophia Loren naked. Most of us might wait for at least a minute before we proceeded with further measures. After all, you're 3,000 miles from home, in a foreign country, wedged into a cum stained porno booth. You don't know how things operate in this neck of the woods. So you wait. Not Dirk. He says he waited a while, and, in his manic state, I expect it seemed like that at the time. I figure he waited about ten to fifteen seconds. Whereupon he pressed another button and held it for a second. Again, there was no immediate gratification. So he dumped all his money into the machine and spread his hand across all the buttons, pushing them all two or three times. Within moments a displeased looking woman in a loose robe walked into the room on the other side of the glass from Dirk. I won't subject you to the lascivious details as they were related to me. Suffice to say that he didn't look her in the face for quite some time. The stripper tried three or four different languages. Possibly because Dirk always looks like a refugee, possibly just to humble him. Either way, you gotta like it. Finally, she landed on English and demanded, "Have you ever done this before?" And here comes Dirk's second big mistake. "Yeah. Sure," he said. He earned no points with that response. Instead he gave the impression of arrogance hiding ignorance. Which doesn't get you anywhere with a stripper who's behind an inch of Plexiglas. The woman tried to explain to Dirk where to put the money and how much one thing or another cost. "You want full nude show--so much. You want masturbation--so much," and so on. Dirk wasn't paying attention. He was watching her robe fall open ever so slightly as she made her explanations--his neck stretched and twitching the whole time. He looked up at her through a haze of testosterone. "I put all my money in the machine." He pointed to the lit up buttons. The woman began to lose patience. Dirk pressed on. "I put fifteen guilder in, which entitles me to a pussy show." From there it broke into full argument. She wasn't budging and Dirk was about to lose it. Within seconds he would lose the rest of his money and get nothing, no whore to fuck before he turned 30, no pussy show, nothing. He could not face the wretched truth of it all. He argued like a fanatic. "I paid fifteen guilder to that machine. Look, right on the front there--it says fifteen guilder. Now lets have a show! Goddamnit!" That was all the woman needed to hear. She stood up straight, pulled her robe tight and left. Dirk remained in the booth for a second, then it came to him: pure failure--simple, mammoth and flat. He fled the scene quickly, which really should be the end of the story, but this is Dirk, so let's continue. He gets back to the train station and sees that his locker is open and everything is gone. He freaks. He makes his distress audible. "Oh! Oh! Oh! All my shit!" People begin to stare. He ignores them and tears off looking for the attendant. He finds the attendant talking to some older, quiet folks. No time for that. "Some mother fucker stole my shit!" He blurted. "I went... I was gone for a while and now my shit is gone! Some son-of-a-bitch..." He dragged the attendant to his locker. "You are sure this is your locker?" The attendant asked. "Of course it's my fucking locker! I'm not fucking stupid." It wasn't his locker. His was the next one to the right. After that Dirk got on the train for Eastern Europe and turned thirty the next day. He's still out there, victimizing the unsuspecting. Once, on a bleak stretch of I-80 in southern Wyoming I tried to kill him in my pick-up truck--ready and willing to sacrifice my truck and my own life if necessary. Anything to get the job done. Totaled the truck, but we both walked away with little loss of blood. No luck. Two days later he was found screaming at a seven-year-old girl who had allowed her pet bunny to get into his yard. He told her she didn't deserve a bunny if she couldn't control it. The girl was mildly retarded. She wouldn't stop crying for three days. When the mother came over later that day to exact an apology from Dirk, he refused. When things became heated, he screamed at the girl again, and in all likelihood caused permanent damage to her psyche. He hasn't apologized to this day. Last I heard, he fell for some girl in her late teens. They both decided that she didn't need the medicine the psychiatrists had prescribed and headed West in a dusty green '73 Fury station wagon. ©1999-2004 Exquisite Corpse. The TWU board will meet today with president Roger Toussaint to vote on the plan. Right now, it looks like the workers will get raises of 3%, 4%, and 4% for each year of a three-year contract, and while all workers would need to "contribute toward health insurance," the contract "would not change the existing pension plan or retirement age," according the Daily News' sources . More stats. From the Post - right now, the union doesn't pay anything towards health care premiums, while the MTA's health care costs are about 12% annually. And from the Daily News, an illustration of what the raises will do: "Bus drivers, the largest job title, have a starting salary of about $35,000 a year and a top salary, not including overtime, of about $50,000. Including scheduled overtime, the base pay rises to about $58,500." There does seem to be some dissension within the TWU, because some members feel like they aren't getting enough (though others are just relieved). Mayor Bloomberg's decision to use the word "thuggish" in his "stop illegally striking"-press conferences is still being criticized by the black community , and some historians think the Strike of 2005 will be forgettable . Comments Can they at least make the Contract expire in the Spring?? Posted by: S.D. | December 27, 2005 10:27 AM The TWU is getting away with murder, if their pensions aren't on the table then pataki took us all for a ride on a delayed F train. That crack whore Touissant should stop race baiting and act like a union leader instead of grandstanding. next subway ride just spit on these criminals - they have a lot of nerve. Posted by: krackilow | December 27, 2005 10:40 AM Toussaint isn't the pne race-baiting. That honor belongs to the mayor and to commenter Krackilow. "Crack whore?" come on, be reasonable. The one thing you are saying with which i agree with wholeheartedly is that Pataki took us for a ride. The MTA could have easily prevented the strike from happening had Pataki been willing to avert it and force Kalikow to negotiate in good faith. Instead, the governor was off campaigning in New Hamshire. Don't take this out on Toussaint, who was doing what union leaders should: fighting for the workers who elected him. The lion's sharre of the blame here belongs to the MTA. Posted by: zach | December 27, 2005 11:02 AM thug One entry found for thug. Main Entry: thug Pronunciation: 'th&g Function: noun Etymology: Hindi thag, literally, thief : a brutal ruffian or assassin Why do you assume all crack whores to be of a minority; that's pretty racist in my book. The mayor, quite correctly labeled the illegal strikers as thugs because they were extorting the citizens of the city who have NO power to address the situation. Yes the MTA is a crooked commission, and the Governor and our beloved state legislators are to blame for their lack of action - but under no circumstances should TWU 100 be let off the hook for their crimes. BTW - the crack whore reference to Toiussant wasn't intended to be racist; he's just addicted to his own ego and will say or do whatever he can to satisfy it. We here at Gothamist aren't racist, unless of course we're talking about chinks and sarah silverman. Happy Kwanza. Posted by: krackilow | December 27, 2005 11:22 AM I am sure that Mayor Bloomberg would have described the TWU as thugs and the strike as illegal regardless of the orgin of its head. Roger Toussant is Mike Quill, who was a thug and IRA terrorist. Now Toussant had a bad case of Sharpton-itis - ie. he loves to be the centre of attention without caring who gets screwed in the process or little things like facts and a desire to do anything positive for his constituency, as if they get what they want he would loose power. Remember, Roger's illegal strike will cost around $1000 for the workers who struck. Posted by: Toby | December 27, 2005 12:05 PM about the 12% annually: the post says it's increasing by 12% annually. looking at the 04 annual report, the health and welfare costs are 710, which makes it 17% of the combined payroll plus health and welfare costs. Posted by: kenneth | December 27, 2005 12:16 PM The workers voted for the strike. They went on strike knowing full well what they were getting into. It may be more comfortable for you to demonize Toussaint as some sort of demagogue, but the workers i spoke to on the picket lines knew full well what they were doing and why they were doing it. This isn't about Roger Toussaint or Mike Bloomberg, it's about the right to strike and about workers' ability to preserve and extend benefits to new members of unions and new sectors of the labor force in the face of pseudo-public corporate bureaucracies like the MTA which are trying to initiate needless cutbacks despite a billion dollar surplus. That's why this strike happened. As for crack whores: The figure/trope of the crack whore is a deeply racialized one in American popular culture and was a central image in the late 80s rise of a certain iteration of the racialized discourse of criminality which republicans used with such great sucess during, for instance, the 1988 presidential election in the figure of Willie Horton. When people use the phrase "crack whore" in the way that you have, they are tapping into a lexicon of black criminality and wild sexuality which is deeply racist. Applied to Toussaint, it seems to evoke an intensification of the "Welfare Mother" trope which strikes me as profoundly racist. Posted by: zach | December 27, 2005 12:31 PM The strike was illegal because the TWU has a near monopoly of an essential service. If they don't understand the moral difference between a strike in that situation and a strike otherwise, I suggest the Taylor law be amended to require a one-week cutoff of electricity, gas, water, and sewer service, and garbage pick-up to TWU members for each day of a strike. To compare the pay, the average (mean) NYC worker GOT $67,000 in 2004 -- if the high-paid finance and headquarter sectors are excluded, the rest of us EARNED an average of $49,600. So I don't think the TWU members are overpaid for what they do by any means. They just get to work a lot less over a lifetime than the rest of us will be. So striking for 20/50 (and don't let them tell you otherwise) was obscene. Posted by: Larry Littlefield | December 27, 2005 12:40 PM larry - thank you for reminding me what I left out of my original post; amend the Taylor law, yes, yes, yes. I was thinking more along the lines of 1week/day + $1000 as a pre-executed judgement against any union member. Along with their benefits administration package they must sign the execution of judgment in advance. zach-you're a communist. If only NYC Transit & the City of New York could secede from state control, then Bloomberg could have fired those greedy bastards. Have you seen the air of entitlement that these thugs surround themselves with? Posted by: krackilow | December 27, 2005 01:07 PM krackilow - grow up. And while you're doing that, take your head out of your ass. And don't forget to wipe your face. Posted by: ethan | December 27, 2005 01:27 PM Larry, what that says to me is that "the rest of us" need strong unions, not that the TWU should be subject to greater degrees of privation to balance things out. What struck me as "obscene" about this strike was the rhetoric of a multi-millionaire like Mike Bloomberg and a plutocrat's wet dream like George Pataki attacking striking workers for daring to defend their union against cutbacks in a time of plenty. The real thuggery in this mess came from Mike Bloomberg's bully pulpit. Posted by: zach | December 27, 2005 01:39 PM (Larry, what that says to me is that "the rest of us" need strong unions) That would make the TWU dollar go less far, as they would either pay more for things or pay higher taxes. Personally, I'd like to see national health care financing, but that would make everyone with health insurance today slightly worse off. How many care about the uninsured, or have the wisdom to realize they may be the uninsured tomorrow? And regardless, you can't have 12% more health care every year. (not that the TWU should be subject to greater degrees of privation to balance things out.) This was not about greater degrees of privateion. It was about: 1) another pension sweetener in the TWU demanded, to 20/50. There is no way everyone can be supported for one year by others for every year they work, period. 2) who gets stuck with the bill for past sweetener passed outside collective bargaining in 2000, along with Pataki's debt and inadequate employer pension contributions even before 2000. My view: no 20/50, and TWU members should pay for the share of the pension hole caused by the 20/50 sweetener and rising longevity, but not the employer underfunding. Posted by: Anonymous | December 27, 2005 01:49 PM Time of plenty- Hah! It is all about the pensions. They are going to crush us- remember this year is the year the boomers start to retire en mass. And the fact is, if the MTA and City get the union split into two camps- new and old, they will have "won" in that a divided union is pretty much impotent. The workers and their union are greedy and should be fined. The workers have great jobs, with great beneifits and simply want more of the same. I would do the same, and expect to pay the price if my tatics backfired. The mayor and gov should have figured out a way to fire them all. Posted by: Max | December 27, 2005 01:52 PM Anybody watching local government channels, such as channel 25, saw scroll across their screen during the strike: ...contigency plan for illegal strike .... along with the news coverage that didn't discuss the strike as a historical right we have in America as workers to unionize and that it brought us great things such as maternity leave, child labor laws and the like was a detriment. The question isn't why do "they" get pay raises when no-one else does, it is, why aren't the rest of America asking more from their employers? A: everyone believes in a dog eat dog world that doesn't really exist. Not everyone can climb to the top of a corporate ladder, there are far fewer rungs at the top to hold us all. Meanwhile those at the top don't want the hierarchy to change so they try and succeed at pitting each one of us against each other. What was done last week was "illegal" by definition of the law, but so was invading Iraq, and so is the goverments stealing of American taxes to put to use to their own pay raises, and their own republic-based system of a caretaker-gets-more-system. Wake Up Morans! (sic) Posted by: Nick D. | December 27, 2005 02:01 PM hey nick - the definition of the law, IS THE LAW. BTW - the invasion of Iraq, although questionable was legal, and authorized by the UN as well. Strikes and unions are legal, but in the public interest a LAW was passed to protect the citiziens against renegade actions. One last thing; 'their republic based system', is yours too - conceived by the founding fathers, and in theory creates opportunity for all in some form or another. Posted by: i_hate_dummies | December 27, 2005 02:15 PM Fox 5 being Fox, had a big full screen graphic with the words ILLEGAL TRANSIT STRIKE, with the word "ILLEGAL" in red. An image of that an WNYE's crawl can be found here . Posted by: Toby | December 27, 2005 02:24 PM Thanks for the "ILLEGAL" links, couldn't find word about that. It is so interesting to me that they would post that on the scrawls. What does that accomplish? Again more "red meat for the dopes". Look: My point is the legality was a main focus of the coverage. Even when asking pedestrians about the strike, the reporters still asked passerby's, "what do you think about this damn union thing" (basically). There was little to no discourse about this strike, just the Mayor and Governor throwing their weight around, and well they should (it's their job), so is getting the 9-11 funds to NY, so is their job to reduce wasteful spending and to enforce the rights of the people (housing rights, ...). But the power conceivably is in the people, if the people don't act then the caretakers act, if nobody questions authority then we all lose. What is lost is not our support of unions, but our support of the American tapestry / way of life, that we used to be proud of. It's now easier to put down one another than support local mom and pop stores (unless it's your own) etc. Founding fathers knew that this was all doomed but in the same vein exist Americans who fight for their rights, fight for a better life, and few or large in number they are the real power, not your boss, not the big businesses. We have just slowly and more readily allowed them to "take care of us" so we don't have to. Posted by: Nick D. | December 27, 2005 02:36 PM fox was indeed pretty egregious. then again, all their title design is a crime. Posted by: dhex | December 27, 2005 02:36 PM This sentence really stuck out in the NY-1 article - "Meanwhile, the TWU is reportedly considering fining those members who crossed the picket line during the strike." The TWU execs thuggishly give the green light to witch hunting suspect transit workers who think it's a stupid idea to go on strike without realizing any increased gains. Also noticed in one of these articles that anti-free speech activist Norm Siegel is back to lecture the naughty population of new york about the proper use of the english language. He lost the Public Advocate election by a large margin last fall, but feels that he'll still take on the role. Posted by: pugsley | December 27, 2005 02:41 PM hey I lost that election too; if I had won I'd have gone out to the picket lines and shot them all in the back - twice!
