Next up: sewing and cake decorating. (gotta be a Renaissance girl, right)Vintage decorating books and old magazines make me week in the knees. Music If it's on vinyl and has a woman in a grass skirt and coconut bra on the cover, I probably have it in my collection. I'm a whore for Hawaiian, ELO and old rock records from thrift stores. I'm also a big fan of independent music. Luckily, New Orleans is full of great bands; I especially like SupaGroup, Rock City Morgue and Pleasure Club. On the not so local front, Juliette Lewis and the Licks, The Charms (Boston) and Broadzilla (Detroit) top the list. Movies I'd like to say I have cool, indie taste in movies but I would be lying. I like the classics: Brain Candy, Monty Python, Xanadu, Better off Dead, Shaun of the Dead, Star Wars (the old ones...), Tease O Rama, Orgy of the Dead, Drop Dead Gorgeous, Logan's Run, old Buck Rogers and Wonder Woman episodes, Flash Gordon (1980).... Television I am the last woman on earth without cable. I have only three channels: Fox, ABC and PBS and that is plenty for me. I actually lived without a television for several years. Most people think I am crazy. Although I admit I watch nothing but HGTV, Discovery and the History Channel when I visit my parents' house. Books I eat books like they are twinkies. My friends say I'm the fastest reader they have ever met. My library card is even starting to get thin in a few places. I read whatever tickles my fancy at the time. A lot of nonfiction: how-tos on home repair and graphic design. I am fascinated by city planning and why people think and act they way they do, so I like 'Asphalt Nation" and 'The Great Good Place." I'm a sucker for vintage books and magazines. I once ran across an excellent bowling photo book from 1955, and "The Encyclopedia of Bad Taste" is a perennial favorite. I also think everyone should read "Bunnicula" and own at least one Ed Emberly How to Draw book. My web site is http://www.pussycatmagazine.com . I recently left behind the 9 to 5 to brave the world as a self-employed writer. Writing is even harder than all the other jobs I've had, and I've had some dooseys. I have worked as a Bourbon Street bartender mixing hurricanes for the drunken masses, a fire-breathing exotic dancer, a graveyeard shift convenience store clerk (robbed at gunpoint, only once ) and salad bar attendant at a Midwestern Ponderosa Steakhouse Buffet. I've driven across country in a 1979 Ford Pinto twice. On the first trip, I was parked outside of the Corn Palace in Mitchell, S.D. Thinking I was pregnant when my period was two weeks late when my boyfriend told me he wanted to have a sex change operation. Life could only get better from there, right? It did. I live in New Orleans, in a 160-year-old house with two cats, one stray and a geeky computer networking engineer. I'm hoping to embark on some new adventures soon. Who I'd like to meet: My great grandma when she was my age. Owen Wilson. I want to sit on his nose.Johnette Napolitano. Her music kept me alive at 16.Nina Hartley. Such a minx. Journal Archives Destinations Journal Pimp My Mint You folks may remember (and still use) Shaun Inman’s Shortstats , and its original mission – short and sweet site statistics. Cut through the crap of all the over-burdened packages with more data than you need, and get to the nitty gritty. I loved it, it was just what I’d been missing. Sure I had Urchin to give me the minutae of everything that happened, but I find it far too cumbersome. Back in March, Shaun alluded to the fact that he wanted to start again from scratch , and thats just what he’s done. From next week, all you need to do is sit back, and have a Mint . Other beta testers have revealed their favourite aspects of MInt: Jason Santa Maria , Kevin Cornell Rob Weychert , Jeff Croft , Mike Davidson , Matt Thomas and Keegan Jones . I have chosen to tell you about the interface sweetness of the Mint. First of all, I truly despise Shaun for coming up with a better leaf logo than I have, but I’ll try not to hold that against him. He is one of those rare beasts, a combination of designer and developer, with neither skill lacking. I hate him for that too. The main interface is comprised of a series of panels that resize with the browser window, but also wrap depending on space available. I so want to know how he does that – it’ll make a huge difference to creating fluid designs. Its possible that not everything will fit in your window in one go, so the fixed top navigation will slide you up or down to where you need it to be. In true Ajax glory, there is no page reloading. For instance, looking at recent, repeat, or newest unique referrers is smooth. In preferences you can choose to have scrollbars and neat little panels, or to let it all hang loose. Don’t like the default order of the panels? While you’re in preferences, re-arrange them how you like, dammit. Those panels you couldn’t care less about can be disabled here too. Blimey, I haven’t even mentioned just how well designed it is yet. Like I said, a designer and a developer – you don’t get that very often. I’m loving the taste of this Mint, and I reckon you will too. Its the spirit of shortstats, but with a far superior execution. Update ” : Its live! Go try Mint for yourself and see what you think. Brilliant. I’m thoroughly looking forward to it. It’s rare a green design can turn out as nicely as this one. #1 David Appleyard 130 days ago i wonder if the buzz will be justifiable, but the design really looks pretty fancy #2 ichigo 130 days ago Yummm… green. Looks frickin tight. A sweet little bevel on that logo too, looks great. #3 Paul Livingstone 130 days ago Brilliant! Looks smooth and pretty. #4 Zach 130 days ago Looks awesome. Can’t wait to _“have a mint”_. #5 Yannick 130 days ago Wow.. from the sneak preview it looks amazing! And knowing what Shaun is capable of doing, i expect nothing short of breathtaking. :P Just one question, i didn’t follow ShortStats and reading his posts i couldn’t figure it out completely. Will this work only for Blogging CMSes like WordPress, TextPattern, etc? Or will it work with Apache as well? Anyone know? #6 andr3 130 days ago It’s like the run up to Christmas when you’re a kid … #7 Timmargh 130 days ago andr3: Shortstat works with whatever you are using, you call an include in the header of your page and shortstat does the rest. I am not sure how mint will work, since I am not cool enough to be in the beta testers group, and Shaun has been pretty tight lipped about the whole thing. #8 Chris J. Davis 130 days ago @Chris: cool. thanks. i hope he sticks to that method. :) #9 andr3 130 days ago Apparently it’s based on a JavaScript include. Look at the source of this page: Imho JavaScript-based solutions are of debatable technical value. I’m happy with access_log. (Note that this is just a guess, Mint could just as well get the usage data via other means.) It would also be interesting to know if this is a hosted service, or if you get to host the complete application yourself, including the analysis side of things. Well, we’ll find out when they release it. #10 mardoen 130 days ago Hm, I can’t figure out how to properly format HTML code so that it shows up in the posting. Just look at the sourcecode and search for “mint.js.php”. #11 mardoen 130 days ago I WANT THAT MINT NOW It’s pretty nice, but all the hype got me too excited before that I never looked at it again. I hope it’s soon _ #12 Pat 130 days ago I’m desperate. We’re talking heroin fix desperate. * shaking * I hear it’s coming VERY soon now, but it might just be another rumour/ploy to get Lisa the webapp groupie excited. Thanks for the fix Jon. :-) #13 Lisa McMillan 130 days ago Looks very tasty. Can’t wait. #14 Dale Cruse 130 days ago I need a mint… refreshment for website :) #15 Viking KARWUR 130 days ago Jon, there’s a small problem with the article snippet on the journal page; its more link has an href of “http://hicksdesign.co.uk/journal/journal/”, and a title of “read all of %s” Comments link is fine. It’s a shame I don’t like Mint : ) #16 Chris Neale 130 days ago Shaun alluded to the fact that he wanted to start again from scratch I’d go further to suggest that he should dedicate full time to web apps. IMHO, his approach to web design is slick but somewhat troublesome, while his approach to web apps is simply awesome. =) #17 riccardo 129 days ago I can’t wait till it comes out ! #18 Denis 128 days ago Looks great! :-) Can’t wait to test this! Demo seem to be down right now… but hey, what can you do but buy it. ;-) #19 Terje 128 days ago I didn’t even look at the demo before I threw my $30 at mint. And it is worth every penny. Easy install, easy login, great stats, and very pretty… surprise surprise. Finally. #20 Lisa McMillan 128 days ago Grrrrr it costs $30. I thought it was going to be free. I guess Shaun wants something for all his hard work… #21 Jason Granger 128 days ago This might sound strange, but I like how Shaun released it without Internet Explorer support. It’s about time Web application developers stopped letting that lousy browser hold up progress. #22 Paul D 128 days ago What a great tool! Thanks Shaun for building something so useful and easy on the eyes, and thanks Jon for letting us know about this stats tool. That might have been the quickest spend of $30 I’ve ever been through (on software). ;o) #23 Christopher Anderson 127 days ago It’s amazing, I saw the mint splash page years ago, and forgot about it. Last week I browsed back to it and added my email to the list. Not a week later, it’s released. #24 JaX 127 days ago I so want this. Besides green sites are always yumm… and without Internet Explorer support – Excellent! #25 Amit Karmakar 127 days ago I love MINT! Can’t wait until I get it installed… already purchased. :-) I think there is a demo available at www.famfamfam.com/mint #26 Paul Stamatiou 127 days ago It’s out at www.haveamint.com #27 Catherine Cameron 126 days ago Have heard about it some days ago. Thought about buying it but first wanted to check my web space stats tool. Found out that it provides only hits. So, I had to buy it. The best feature I think is showing you the resolution of the users screen. For a designer it’s good to know what the customers have. #28 Michael 126 days ago Hm… sounded all great, but I’m not ready to cash out $30 yet… I’m still happy with ShortStat, and 30 dollars is a little steep just for a stats collection software, IMO. #29 shorty114 126 days ago Yeah, that leaf logo is really nice. For personal use I may not go with something like this. However, for my freelance customers this will be very useful. That Inman bastard, he keeps on hitting them out of the park. #30 Egor Kloos 120 days ago playlist -- My Riffs Subscribe to my playlist: RSS sidenotes: Subscribe to these links: RSS . Fortunately, the music on this self-titled release leaves little to question as any energy that is spent on debating the name is almost immediately shifted to the lower part of the body. Yes, the legs. Just to be sure, I checked with your doctor, and those appendages are OK to use while listening to indie music. Musically speaking, Dracula Zombie USA’s music is quite spastic and has the energy of a 3-year-old. Many of the songs on the album combine elements of dancey DJ-driven electronica, call-and-response punk, some arty noise-punk, and, of course, classic indie rock along the lines of the Pixies. The music is more than just a mash-up of different elements and a carbon copy of Mr. “Two Turn Tables and a Microphone” Beck. In fact, this is better than what any bedroom mashup “artist” could cut and paste together. ( continued ) You can access the rest of my reviews written at DOA here . Having de-holidized myself and getting my day to day routine back to normal, posts and the podcast will resume shortly. If anyone cares, here’s my top 10 of 2005. 1) A Northern Chorus – Bitter Hands Resign Lyrically, sonically, emotionally superior than any other album this year, hands down. 2) Dracula Zombie USA – S/T I am surprised this band hasn’t garnered more hype. 3) Block Party – Silent Alarm Poppy guilty pleasure of 2005. 4) My Morning Jacket – Z Color me amazed, I never expected an album like this from MMJ. 5) Bob Mould – Body of Song Welcome back to the world of rock, Bob. 6) M83 – Before the Dawn Heals Us Big sound that makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. 7) Sun Kil Moon – Tiny Cities I wish I had Mark Kozelek’s voice. 8) Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – S/T Self-released band does good, thanks to mp3 blogs. 9) Okkervil River – Black Sheep Boy Indie Americana-rock at its finest. 10) Low – The Great Destroyer Legendary quiet band experiments with turning up the amps, blows my mind. Posted by Jason : Comment * * * Two Gallants · 14 days ago Drum and bass is so 1990’s. This decade it’s drum and guitar. And that is what the Two Gallants are, a guitarist and a drummer who create music that could be interpreted as folky punk Irish drinking songs for playing poker in a Midwestern mining town pub. Singer/guitarist Adam Stephenson and drummer Tyson Vogel complement each other nicely creating songs full of the blues and despair but dripping over the sides with a twinge hope, like all good songs are supposed to be. “My Madonna” is my favorite of the lot below: “I awake on the floor with my country at war and I wish I could care but my liver’s too sore. Helped with the likes of members of the Decemberists, Norfolk & Western, and even Desert City Soundtrack, Short evokes a modern country and alt-country feel while presenting a modern and unique vocal-driven sound. On her debut, Oh Say Little Dogies, Why? , Short used mostly her voice and acoustic guitar, writing pleasant ballads in the style of Lucinda Williams, but on her newest release and first on Hush Records , she has other musicians filling out her sound with light drums, strings, horns, and more. Still, the focus is on acoustic guitar and Short’s voice, which, with echoey production, brings to mind Kristen Hersh and even Tonya Donnelly, not in style but in tone and approach. It gives the songs a more pressing and emotive flair. Short’s songs are simple in structure but sweet and heartfelt, possessing the storytelling quality true country and folk are known for. She has a lovely voice, and with superb production qualities, her newest release, Captain Wild Horse (Rides the Heart of Tomorrow) , is a fine effort that maintains country sensibilities while surely appealing to more diverse fans.
