Journal Archives Destinations Journal Pimp My Safari: As ready as it will ever be “As ready as it’ll ever be”, is an apt description of a little side-project of mine just launched, Pimp My Safari.com . Its been a pet project for many months, and was started as a reaction to all the sites cataloguing Firefox extensions. Many excellent plugins for Safari have been developed, but because Safari doesn’t have an official ‘extension architecture’, many are unaware of these extensions. This is where PimpMySafari comes in – a resource for the pimping of your copy of Safari no less! Its just intended to be a simple, functional, information-based site. I’m not giving it a whole lot of time design-wise, its not the purpose. I just wanted a central place to promote these add-ons. I haven’t even bothered testing in IE, but I have given it a scant look in Mozilla. So here’s my plan. All the Safari related browser talk will now go to Pimp My Safari, leaving this blog returning to matters of design, css, music and family. Those few who are interested in such things can now read them there. When meeting people at SXSW, I often found myself apologising for running a dull browser-based blog. I shouldn’t have to, but I did feel a little embarrassed. I’m still rather wary of blogging about my family, I’d like to do it more than I do, but I just don’t feel comfortable doing it. I wish it weren’t the case, but the internet isn’t an appropriate/safe place for such things – there are nutters out there. Anyway, I digress… A quick word about the CMS When I started this, many months ago, I was using WordPress 1.5 nightlies (I wanted to make sure that I wasn’t missing out on anything). While I was very impressed with how far it had come since the last time I’d evaluated it (1.1), it was a relief to get back to Textpattern, and thats what I’ve used for the final site. I don’t think its just a case of being familiar with it. It just worked the way I wanted it to, and enabled me to easily run the entire site. So there we go, I hope someone finds it useful. I’d love it if people felt like contributing, so let me know if you feel the urge! I now have somewhere to go to for this kind of information. Great work Jon. Saft being the only thing I use with Safari, you have yet again opened my doors to a whole arena of plugins. Thanks! :) #1 Sam 296 days ago It looks really good. Maybe ill start using safari more often now. #2 Oscar 296 days ago Very nice work Jon. As for blogging about your family, just change their names when you write about them. It will be seamless. You know, your little girl, uh, Brandy, and the boy, er, Son. Yeah, that works. And your loving wife, Betty Paige. You could even throw in a couple of crazy American neighbors, one whose short with a really long, often confused name, and the other with an absurd red beard. Main, this just writes itself. I smell sitcom! #3 Jason Santa Maria 296 days ago Great stuff Jon, maybe you can convince me that Safari is the Mac equivalent of IE!! #4 John Oxton 296 days ago Thanks, Jon! Now I have somewhere to point my friends who recently switched to Mac and have no idea where to find all these extensions, and nice list for myself… ;) Good job! By the way, there is small mistake in your code, in the right sidebar the parts of text are outside the P tag and the P tag follows them, but it is empty. ;) #5 Raven 296 days ago That should read: Safari ISN’T the Mac equivalent of IE!! #6 John Oxton 296 days ago Hello. I’ve visited here a lot, but never had anything to say. First, I love your designs. Second, just wanted to tell you that on high resolutions (1600×1200) on a Windows Firefox install, the ”*e*” in “contribute” shows on the far left of the screen. I assume this is because you used text-indent: -1000px; Maybe -3000px; would fix it. Excellent site you have here :-) #7 Ian Spence 296 days ago Great work on this site Jon. I didn’t realize that there were so many great plugins available for Safari. #8 Jeff Smith 296 days ago To continue on what Ian Spence wrote, on a 1920×1200 resolution, you can see the blue text links for “Blog” and “Contribute” on the far left. #9 chris rhee 296 days ago It looks different than I expected, but it has a certain dignified simplicity to it, and the safari logo looks great, so that picks it up a notch. You’ve taken a step toward building a network of your very own, ala 9rules. #10 Scott 296 days ago Very cool Jon, I was getting antsy about the release of the site. It turned out very well indeed. I think maybe an all in one Mac browser site would have been better. Your opinion of the browser is fascinating and I wish you’d post even more about them :) I know how you feel about posting about your family on the internet, instead of using their names just say son, daughter and wifey. I felt a bit worried when I posted a few pics of my family on Flickr but I learnt not to worry so much. #11 Chris McElligott 296 days ago Found another bug (Win/FF1.0.1): Your list (or whatever you want to call it) for the top entry, Saft 7.6.0, isn’t displaying right on the main page. Instead of the list, I’m getting h4. New in 7.6.0: * Improvement: Search set to group shortcuts and search multiple search engines at same time * Improvement: Make Growl sticky flag customizable * Bug fix: Crash in rare conditions related to many undoes and switching on/off undo support * Bug fix: Problem with Reset Safari button in kiosk mode Perhaps it’s just a filter the software applies to things on the main page? #12 Jordan 296 days ago Jordan, It looks like that on all browsers I’ve seen it with. Looks like Textile markup isn’t being parsed on the main page. #13 Tony 296 days ago When should we expect pimpmyblog.com to become active? :) #14 Rob Scriva 295 days ago You should make the silver casing to the Safari logo all gold. You know, like its all pimped out. And maybe add a few diamonds to the face of the compass. Right now the site is feeling decidedly non-pimpish. #15 Kevin 295 days ago Yeah, make it something like this: http://people.zeelandnet.nl/marco/pimpzilla/ (screenshot at http://people.zeelandnet.nl/marco/pimpzilla/images/pimpzilla.jpg) #16 Jordan 295 days ago I had thought about that style, but time is against me. Besides its about macs – so minimal is the order of the day, right? #17 Jon Hicks 295 days ago I thought pimping was the order of the day. #18 Kevin 295 days ago Nah, Information, and having a life is the order of the day. I prefer it this way. #19 Jon Hicks 295 days ago Nice work Jon. Now it’s going to be just a little tougher to decide which browser to click on each time I go to my dock. Safari? Omniweb? Camino? Firefox? IE 5.2? Kidding. By the way, I love what you’ve done with your comments design. #20 Garrett 295 days ago Jon, Aren’t you worried that Apple might come down on you for using the Safari icon? #21 Scott Johnson 295 days ago I’ve switched back to Safari as my default browser in order to give the site a try. #22 Ryan 295 days ago Nice. As far as I can see, it works great here in FF 1.0.1/Win. Except for one thing. The textarea on the contact page seem to be wider than the page an go all out far to the right, which makes a horizontal scrollbar peek out and say hi. #23 Andreas Graulund 295 days ago In the distance you can hear wailing and gnashing of teeth Jon… why have you forsaken me!? I thought we had… something, you, me and WordPress? I just don’t know if I can take this… I’m going to curl up in my sock drawer and sleep for a week. Nice job on the pimpin site by the way. ;) #24 Chris J. Davis 294 days ago Sorry Chris – I just couldn’t do it all in Wordpress how I wanted to. It came very close though! #25 Jon Hicks 294 days ago Love the site and design, love it. Thanks for the pointers on OS X goodies. #26 Jan 293 days ago I love it! As usual with all your work Jon, it’s great.. And handy too. No more googling for Safari stuff. I might even start to use it again instead of Firefox #27 Rutger 292 days ago That’s a great resource Jon, well done! As far as Textpattern, I tried it but found it too frustrating to get certain things done. But it still has one of the best admin interfaces out there I’ll give them that. #28 Heiser Erwin 292 days ago Great site; informative, and it’s very easy to use. You the best Hicks! I apologize for the bad picture qualities. How Many Friends do you have? 0-250 250-500 500+ Friends? You mean how many hotties do I got? Do you know 75% of those on your list in PERSON? Yes, from before MySpace. Yes, from MySpace (I like to meet people) No, I don't meet people off these things. Of course. MySpace is the major hookup site. I'll meet them if they're hot.. that's how I met 75% of them. Just 1. Not really but I'd like to meet 75% of the hotties on my page. Not really but I'd like to meet 75% of the people I don't know. How do you know those on your list? (NOT in person, just in general) I know most of them solely through MySpace and I added them. I know most of them solely through MySpace and THEY added me! I know most from other places not in real life like chat, yahoo or xanga and not on MySpace. I know most from school, in real life, and from outside of MySpace. What kind of people do you add? (can check more than one) I add everyone and anyone. I need more friends! I only add those I already know. If I don't know you.. keep on movin. I NEED to have everyone I know on my list! If they don't have a MySpace I'll make them get one! I only add girls. or I only add guys. If you aint cute.. keep on movin.. j/k I'm not really there to add anyone. Who I add doesn't really matter.. long as it adds to the numbers! Comments are... (can check more than one) Semi-important. Doesn't really matter if you comment or not. IF YOU DONT COMMENT ME IM GONNA DELETE YOUR ASS. I could care less. I JUST WANT MORE FRIENDS!! ADD ME!! I like when they holla and hit me up with sum luv. Holla back. I don't really comment but I like to read other's comments. Your page is... Plain. I have better things to do than to bother with making it all fancy/I don't know how. It reflects me. I spend time to make it look good and keep adjusting it to what I want it to look like. My page kicks ass! Plain or has pictures of hot guys all over it or near naked women all over it (or in the friend list/comments area) I could care less! Friends friends friends! Comments comments comments! I try to disguise who I am so it depends. I'm here for... (can check more than one) Friends I know.. wish all my friends had MySpace! Friends I know/to make friends.. anythings cool. Dating or meeting people/relationships Just to hook up and get some ass! Just to see how many friends I can get on my list! To show everyone how popular I am! I'm here for one person only. Here to secretly read up on peoples lives or find out more about someone... Here to look at my gfs/bfs site, see if they're up to anything. How often do you check up on your page? Every now and then/I admit i'm not obsessed. Every chance I get. Gotta update.. gotta make it pretty. Gotta check comments. Only to read someone elses/others sites. Huh? I'm not a stalker... Gotta check it often to see if any new hotties added me. Always check it to see how many friend requests I got! or to see if people accepted my adds. I always check it just to get back at all the fans. I know i'm loved. How many friend requests do you get? A few every once in a while. A few every day or every other day. At least one every week. I don't add people I don't know.. so I hardly get them. I'll only add if its someone im looking for. How many friend requests do you SEND? A few every once in a while. A few every day or every other day. At least one every week. I don't usually send. I let them do all the adding.. and they do. I only send if its someone I'm looking for. What kind of pictures do you post? Mostly different pictures of me in different poses and stuff. I put pictures of my friends, of me... basically anything I wanna put on my site. Normal stuff you know. I don't really put pictures of me or people. Maybe just of things or cartoons. I don't wanna put myself on the site. Your feelings about MySpace? (can check more than one) Its great cause I have my friends on it.. and I get to meet new people. MySpace Rocks! (except when its down for maintanance.) Im in love with MySpace! I've never found a better way to make "friends". One day I hope to be on EVERYONES list! I love Tom! MySpace is just another good way to find someone I'm looking for. They've got to be on here somewhere. MySpace is a good way to keep up with the people/look into their lives. I love MySpace and all the fans it brought me. Never have I had SO many people "luv" me in all my life. MySpace is hot. But the people I meet on it are hotter. What's New & Hot! Fortunately, the music on this self-titled release leaves little to question as any energy that is spent on debating the name is almost immediately shifted to the lower part of the body. Yes, the legs. Just to be sure, I checked with your doctor, and those appendages are OK to use while listening to indie music. Musically speaking, Dracula Zombie USA’s music is quite spastic and has the energy of a 3-year-old. Many of the songs on the album combine elements of dancey DJ-driven electronica, call-and-response punk, some arty noise-punk, and, of course, classic indie rock along the lines of the Pixies. The music is more than just a mash-up of different elements and a carbon copy of Mr. “Two Turn Tables and a Microphone” Beck. In fact, this is better than what any bedroom mashup “artist” could cut and paste together. ( continued ) You can access the rest of my reviews written at DOA here . If anyone cares, here’s my top 10 of 2005. 1) A Northern Chorus – Bitter Hands Resign Lyrically, sonically, emotionally superior than any other album this year, hands down. 2) Dracula Zombie USA – S/T I am surprised this band hasn’t garnered more hype. 3) Block Party – Silent Alarm Poppy guilty pleasure of 2005. 4) My Morning Jacket – Z Color me amazed, I never expected an album like this from MMJ. 5) Bob Mould – Body of Song Welcome back to the world of rock, Bob. 6) M83 – Before the Dawn Heals Us Big sound that makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. 7) Sun Kil Moon – Tiny Cities I wish I had Mark Kozelek’s voice. 8) Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – S/T Self-released band does good, thanks to mp3 blogs. 9) Okkervil River – Black Sheep Boy Indie Americana-rock at its finest. 10) Low – The Great Destroyer Legendary quiet band experiments with turning up the amps, blows my mind. And that is what the Two Gallants are, a guitarist and a drummer who create music that could be interpreted as folky punk Irish drinking songs for playing poker in a Midwestern mining town pub. Singer/guitarist Adam Stephenson and drummer Tyson Vogel complement each other nicely creating songs full of the blues and despair but dripping over the sides with a twinge hope, like all good songs are supposed to be. “My Madonna” is my favorite of the lot below: “I awake on the floor with my country at war and I wish I could care but my liver’s too sore. Helped with the likes of members of the Decemberists, Norfolk & Western, and even Desert City Soundtrack, Short evokes a modern country and alt-country feel while presenting a modern and unique vocal-driven sound. On her debut, Oh Say Little Dogies, Why? , Short used mostly her voice and acoustic guitar, writing pleasant ballads in the style of Lucinda Williams, but on her newest release and first on Hush Records , she has other musicians filling out her sound with light drums, strings, horns, and more. Still, the focus is on acoustic guitar and Short’s voice, which, with echoey production, brings to mind Kristen Hersh and even Tonya Donnelly, not in style but in tone and approach. It gives the songs a more pressing and emotive flair. Short’s songs are simple in structure but sweet and heartfelt, possessing the storytelling quality true country and folk are known for. She has a lovely voice, and with superb production qualities, her newest release, Captain Wild Horse (Rides the Heart of Tomorrow) , is a fine effort that maintains country sensibilities while surely appealing to more diverse fans.
