They just have very competitive intramural leagues.* This is a real college for whoring. 25 students in jeans and T-shirts could have been in any career that requires hustle. The classes, covering topics such as effective marketing, stress reduction and legal issues, could have been part of any professional development seminar. But this was "Whore College," and any illusion it was just another corporate how-to for young go-getters abruptly ended at the sex toy display and was stripped away for good during a graphic demonstration that put a whole new twist on the concept of hands-on training. It is an immoral and unethical thing to be doing, and undermines both the family and the community at large. 2. It causes ill effects in the community: drug abuse, crime, violence, and lower property values. The first argument is both true and completely beside the point; prostitution isn't called "the oldest profession" for nothing. People ain't gonna stop doing the nasty no matter how illegal you make it. Making it illegal does drive it underground and cause undesirable side-effects (evil pimps, STDs, and making prostitution the profession of last resort for the lowest rung of society, male and female alike). And the second problem flows from the first: violence, drugs, and crime go hand-in-hand with prostitution because they are all related sequelae. My main beef with prostitution is that it is a horrible and unhealthy lifestyle for the person practicing it. No matter how careful you are, no matter how conscientious, this lifestyle will almost inevitably lead to health problems and an early death. Even if you avoid the drug-abuse that seems pandemic among prostitutes, and even if you can avoid getting one or many STDs, and even if you avoid being seriously hurt or killed by an unbalanced john...the ultimate price is mental. You can't do this sort of thing day in and day out, day after day and year after year, without simply dying inside. But still it should be an informed choice , and then only of an adult person. Legalizing the trade would at least impose some regulations and protections for the practicioners, and would take at least some of the danger out of it for both parties. ...and man, I am babbling way too much... You see, here in this fair city there are lots of women who used to, and for all I know still do, call themselves "sex-positive feminists," but who are anything but sexy. They take great pride in talk and behavior designed to shock the normals -- or at least to let themselves believe they're shocking the normals, as if most normals cared a whole lot about what they're doing. In this way, they convince themselves that they are being brave, breaking down barriers, and embarking on a journey of self-discovery (like our Tucson mother) and self-empowerment. It's fundamentally just another way of rebelling against their parents, like joining a commune or running off with a rock musician. And for anyone past the age of, oh, 19 or so, there's something a little pathetic about that. But what's more important is the fact that these people are the most fantastic bores you can imagine. They love to hear themselves talk, and they're convinced that because they're talking about sex that somehow makes their analysis exciting instead of boring. I attended a film presentation and lecture by CQ a few years ago (girl I was dating wanted to see it): a series of film clips centered on masturbation. Who would have thought that anyone could make that topic, so near and dear to the hearts of everyone present, so utterly tedious? My date and I kept rolling our eyes at each other during the talks, wishing she would shut up and go back to the film clips. It was like listening to an NPR Weekend Edition piece on music, where you wish they would quit talking over the damn song and let you hear what it sounds like for yourself. In the past couple of weeks thier have been several scandals if you will, each one bringing to light the almost distorted scence of morality preasent on the YULA boys campus (The 9th grade cheating incident comes to mind). However today I would like to discuss an incident i witnessed first hand. During Mincha time I witnessed torture in the worst degree. I witnessed the tears of the tortured, and i saw the smile on the face of the tourcheres. Both were equally as haunting. However I feel I may be getting ahead of myself, so allow me to start from the begining. After second mod i headed over to the blue picnic tabels near the lunch room to quickly complete that days math home work. As you very well know after 2nd mod was mincha...no i was not intentionally ditching mincha for I planned to go in to the beis midrash as soon as i completed my math homework, however what i saw i felt i needed to watch, if not out of disgust, then in order to relate the occurences over to the YULA student body. As I was sitting doing my homework, I overheard two sophmores decide that now would be a good time to go "trash a freshman" (make note that these kids are probably two of the most obese kids in the school...hence insecurities) They started with one freshman...it was just them, i didn't find it funny, but what ever he didn't really fit in the trash can and he didnt seem to get hurt. However, as word spread around the yard that people were trashing freshman it was as if every insecure kid in the school came out of hiding for the event. Now all trashing of freshman i feel is bordering on some sort of evil...but allow me to tell you what happened to the last freshy they trashed... I don't know the freshman well, acttualy I really don't know him at all. He contributed to the litterary journal, and he seems to be a nice kid. I have heard that the kids parents are divorced, but this is besides the fact...the point is he is a kid who never did anything to anyone... This freshman is heading towards the sephardi beit midrash to daven, when the mob (litterlly 20 people) pick him up and begin to drag him. Now he resists, everyone just laughs. LAUGHTER!!!!!! Just as people today decorate their homes during the festive season with pine, spruce, and fir trees, ancient peoples hung evergreen boughs over their doors and windows. In many countries it was believed that evergreens would keep away witches, ghosts, evil spirits, and illness. In the Northern hemisphere, the shortest day and longest night of the year falls on December 21 or December 22 and is called the winter solstice. Many ancient people believed that the sun was a god and that winter came every year because the sun god had become sick and weak. They celebrated the solstice because it meant that at last the sun god would begin to get well. Evergreen boughs reminded them of all the green plants that would grow again when the sun god was strong and summer would return. The ancient Egyptians worshipped a god called Ra, who had the head of a hawk and wore the sun as a blazing disk in his crown. At the solstice, when Ra began to recover from the illness, the Egyptians filled their homes with green palm rushes which symbolized for them the triumph of life over death. Early Romans marked the solstice with a feast called the Saturnalia in honor of Saturn, the god of agriculture. The Romans knew that the solstice meant that soon farms and orchards would be green and fruitful. To mark the occasion, they decorated their homes and temples with evergreen boughs. In Northern Europe the mysterious Druids, the priests of the ancient Celts, also decorated their temples with evergreen boughs as a symbol of everlasting life. The fierce Vikings in Scandinavia thought that evergreens were the special plant of the sun god, Balder. Germany is credited with starting the Christmas tree tradition as we now know it in the 16th century when devout Christians brought decorated trees into their homes. Some built Christmas pyramids of wood and decorated them with evergreens and candles if wood was scarce. It is a widely held belief that Martin Luther, the 16th-century Protestant reformer, first added lighted candles to a tree. Walking toward his home one winter evening, composing a sermon, he was awed by the brilliance of stars twinkling amidst evergreens. To recapture the scene for his family, he erected a tree in the main room and wired its branches with lighted candles. Most 19th-century Americans found Christmas trees an oddity. The first record of one being on display was in the 1830s by the German settlers of Pennsylvania, although trees had been a tradition in many German homes much earlier. The Pennsylvania German settlements had community trees as early as 1747. But, as late as the 1840s Christmas trees were seen as pagan symbols and not accepted by most Americans. It is not surprising that, like many other festive Christmas customs, the tree was adopted so late in America. To the New England Puritans, Christmas was sacred. The pilgrims's second governor, William Bradford, wrote that he tried hard to stamp out "pagan mockery" of the observance, penalizing any frivolity. The influential Oliver Cromwell preached against "the heathen traditions" of Christmas carols, decorated trees, and any joyful expression that desecrated "that sacred event." In 1659, the General Court of Massachusetts enacted a law making any observance of December 25 (other than a church service) a penal offense; people were fined for hanging decorations. That stern solemnity continued until the 19th century, when the influx of German and Irish immigrants undermined the Puritan legacy. In 1846, the popular royals, Queen Victoria and her German Prince, Albert, were sketched in the Illustrated London News standing with their children around a Christmas tree. Unlike the previous royal family, Victoria was very popular with her subjects, and what was done at court immediately became fashionable—not only in Britain, but with fashion-conscious East Coast American Society. The Christmas tree had arrived. By the 1890s Christmas ornaments were arriving from Germany and Christmas tree popularity was on the rise around the U.S. It was noted that Europeans used small trees about four feet in height, while Americans liked their Christmas trees to reach from floor to ceiling.
