One of the year's most heavily-anticipated new releases, 12 Songs pairs the pop music icon with legendary producer Rick Rubin. Producing a Neil Diamond album has been a long-time dream for Rubin, whose extraordinary resume spans the history of hip-hop from LL Cool J to Jay Z, the world of hardcore rock from Slayer to System Of A Down, and the pantheon of mythic stars from Tom Petty and Donovan to Mick Jagger and Johnny Cash's immortal Grammy-winning American Recordings series. "After the first few meetings," writes Neil Diamond in his revelatory liner notes to 12 Songs , "I realized (Rick) loved music in the same way I did. For both of us it was visceral, passionate and could even be an elevating experience. It turned out that we served the same mistress - music, and that was to become our first real connection." According to Neil, "I locked myself in the recording studio with a whole box of number 2 pencils, a big stack of my trusty yellow legal pads and a funky old three-quarter size Martin Guitar with an E minor chord that could break your heart.Rick was determined not to rush the process, but to wait until we got to the essence of the songs I was working on. I loved the sheer freedom of creating music for its own sake." "Most of the songs were recorded with Neil playing and singing at the same time," said Rick Rubin in a Rolling Stone article (9/22/05) profiling the producer, "and it's a different animal. It's taking him back to being more of a singer-songwriter. He really blows me away." When it came time to record 12 Songs , Rick Rubin assembled a sympathetic ensemble of musicians to capture the essence of Neil Diamond's extraordinary new songs, each of them a finely-wrought gem, soul-searching, honest, yearning, and powerful. A core group of musicians made up of Mike Campbell (guitar) and Benmont Tench (piano/organ) from Tom Petty's Heartbreakers and guitarist Smokey Hormel (Beck, Tom Waits) and other musicians including the renowned Larry Knechtel (piano) and Billy Preston (organ) played on the album. The track listing for 12 Songs is: "Oh Mary," "Hell Yeah," "Captain of a Shipwreck," "Evermore," "Save Me A Saturday Night," "Delirious Love," "I'm On To You," "What's It Gonna Be," "Man of God," "Create Me," "Face Me," and "We." A special digipak edition of 12 Songs will feature two bonus tracks: "Men Are So Easy" and an alternate version of "Delirious Love" with guest artist Brian Wilson. ".judging by eight finished tracks," wrote Lorraine Ali, previewing 12 Songs for Newsweek (August 1, 2005), "this is the best work Diamond has done in 30 years." Journal Archives Destinations Journal Pimp My Mint You folks may remember (and still use) Shaun Inman’s Shortstats , and its original mission – short and sweet site statistics. Cut through the crap of all the over-burdened packages with more data than you need, and get to the nitty gritty. I loved it, it was just what I’d been missing. Sure I had Urchin to give me the minutae of everything that happened, but I find it far too cumbersome. Back in March, Shaun alluded to the fact that he wanted to start again from scratch , and thats just what he’s done. From next week, all you need to do is sit back, and have a Mint . Other beta testers have revealed their favourite aspects of MInt: Jason Santa Maria , Kevin Cornell Rob Weychert , Jeff Croft , Mike Davidson , Matt Thomas and Keegan Jones . I have chosen to tell you about the interface sweetness of the Mint. First of all, I truly despise Shaun for coming up with a better leaf logo than I have, but I’ll try not to hold that against him. He is one of those rare beasts, a combination of designer and developer, with neither skill lacking. I hate him for that too. The main interface is comprised of a series of panels that resize with the browser window, but also wrap depending on space available. I so want to know how he does that – it’ll make a huge difference to creating fluid designs. Its possible that not everything will fit in your window in one go, so the fixed top navigation will slide you up or down to where you need it to be. In true Ajax glory, there is no page reloading. For instance, looking at recent, repeat, or newest unique referrers is smooth. In preferences you can choose to have scrollbars and neat little panels, or to let it all hang loose. Don’t like the default order of the panels? While you’re in preferences, re-arrange them how you like, dammit. Those panels you couldn’t care less about can be disabled here too. Blimey, I haven’t even mentioned just how well designed it is yet. Like I said, a designer and a developer – you don’t get that very often. I’m loving the taste of this Mint, and I reckon you will too. Its the spirit of shortstats, but with a far superior execution. Update ” : Its live! Go try Mint for yourself and see what you think. Brilliant. I’m thoroughly looking forward to it. It’s rare a green design can turn out as nicely as this one. #1 David Appleyard 130 days ago i wonder if the buzz will be justifiable, but the design really looks pretty fancy #2 ichigo 130 days ago Yummm… green. Looks frickin tight. A sweet little bevel on that logo too, looks great. #3 Paul Livingstone 130 days ago Brilliant! Looks smooth and pretty. #4 Zach 130 days ago Looks awesome. Can’t wait to _“have a mint”_. #5 Yannick 130 days ago Wow.. from the sneak preview it looks amazing! And knowing what Shaun is capable of doing, i expect nothing short of breathtaking. :P Just one question, i didn’t follow ShortStats and reading his posts i couldn’t figure it out completely. Will this work only for Blogging CMSes like WordPress, TextPattern, etc? Or will it work with Apache as well? Anyone know? #6 andr3 130 days ago It’s like the run up to Christmas when you’re a kid … #7 Timmargh 130 days ago andr3: Shortstat works with whatever you are using, you call an include in the header of your page and shortstat does the rest. I am not sure how mint will work, since I am not cool enough to be in the beta testers group, and Shaun has been pretty tight lipped about the whole thing. #8 Chris J. Davis 130 days ago @Chris: cool. thanks. i hope he sticks to that method. :) #9 andr3 130 days ago Apparently it’s based on a JavaScript include. Look at the source of this page: Imho JavaScript-based solutions are of debatable technical value. I’m happy with access_log. (Note that this is just a guess, Mint could just as well get the usage data via other means.) It would also be interesting to know if this is a hosted service, or if you get to host the complete application yourself, including the analysis side of things. Well, we’ll find out when they release it. #10 mardoen 130 days ago Hm, I can’t figure out how to properly format HTML code so that it shows up in the posting. Just look at the sourcecode and search for “mint.js.php”. #11 mardoen 130 days ago I WANT THAT MINT NOW It’s pretty nice, but all the hype got me too excited before that I never looked at it again. I hope it’s soon _ #12 Pat 130 days ago I’m desperate. We’re talking heroin fix desperate. * shaking * I hear it’s coming VERY soon now, but it might just be another rumour/ploy to get Lisa the webapp groupie excited. Thanks for the fix Jon. :-) #13 Lisa McMillan 130 days ago Looks very tasty. Can’t wait. #14 Dale Cruse 130 days ago I need a mint… refreshment for website :) #15 Viking KARWUR 130 days ago Jon, there’s a small problem with the article snippet on the journal page; its more link has an href of “http://hicksdesign.co.uk/journal/journal/”, and a title of “read all of %s” Comments link is fine. It’s a shame I don’t like Mint : ) #16 Chris Neale 130 days ago Shaun alluded to the fact that he wanted to start again from scratch I’d go further to suggest that he should dedicate full time to web apps. IMHO, his approach to web design is slick but somewhat troublesome, while his approach to web apps is simply awesome. =) #17 riccardo 129 days ago I can’t wait till it comes out ! #18 Denis 128 days ago Looks great! :-) Can’t wait to test this! Demo seem to be down right now… but hey, what can you do but buy it. ;-) #19 Terje 128 days ago I didn’t even look at the demo before I threw my $30 at mint. And it is worth every penny. Easy install, easy login, great stats, and very pretty… surprise surprise. Finally. #20 Lisa McMillan 128 days ago Grrrrr it costs $30. I thought it was going to be free. I guess Shaun wants something for all his hard work… #21 Jason Granger 128 days ago This might sound strange, but I like how Shaun released it without Internet Explorer support. It’s about time Web application developers stopped letting that lousy browser hold up progress. #22 Paul D 128 days ago What a great tool! Thanks Shaun for building something so useful and easy on the eyes, and thanks Jon for letting us know about this stats tool. That might have been the quickest spend of $30 I’ve ever been through (on software). ;o) #23 Christopher Anderson 127 days ago It’s amazing, I saw the mint splash page years ago, and forgot about it. Last week I browsed back to it and added my email to the list. Not a week later, it’s released. #24 JaX 127 days ago I so want this. Besides green sites are always yumm… and without Internet Explorer support – Excellent! #25 Amit Karmakar 127 days ago I love MINT! Can’t wait until I get it installed… already purchased. :-) I think there is a demo available at www.famfamfam.com/mint #26 Paul Stamatiou 127 days ago It’s out at www.haveamint.com #27 Catherine Cameron 126 days ago Have heard about it some days ago. Thought about buying it but first wanted to check my web space stats tool. Found out that it provides only hits. So, I had to buy it. The best feature I think is showing you the resolution of the users screen. For a designer it’s good to know what the customers have. #28 Michael 126 days ago Hm… sounded all great, but I’m not ready to cash out $30 yet… I’m still happy with ShortStat, and 30 dollars is a little steep just for a stats collection software, IMO. #29 shorty114 126 days ago Yeah, that leaf logo is really nice. For personal use I may not go with something like this. However, for my freelance customers this will be very useful. That Inman bastard, he keeps on hitting them out of the park. #30 Egor Kloos 120 days ago playlist -- My Riffs Subscribe to my playlist: RSS sidenotes: Subscribe to these links: RSS . In the current formation, the band exists since 1998. SPECK played many locations throughout Europe and are known for outstanding brutal funny things. Toured with hip bands such as D.R.I. and the Locust, supported Murphy`s Law, Garlic Boys and not so hip ones. In 2003: Released their 6th recording, the mini album Honest Words And Broken Knuckles on ATREE IN A FIELD RECORDS. Also releasing the satirical SPECK-O-POLITAN magazine, the worlds smallest 40-page-fanzine.SPECK is Lars the flesh inker on the main mic / Marlon the booker on bass, mic and analogue footgrinder / Michi the social assistent on guitar and mic / Nielz the ecologist on drums. BIOGRAPHY (XXL) SPECK was formed one day in August 1996. Starting as a two man project back then, we (Fip and Nielz, the remnants of former bands) established the formula to put AGGRESSIVE SHITLOADED MOODS IN TO SHORT SONGS and recorded the essence on a 4-track-tapemachine. While listening to the tunes we had just recorded, we would eventually chew on a little snack consisting of bread, cheese and ... speck (swiss word for bacon). We decided to name the project "speck", because it had that supreme short sound to it - at least if one compared it to "broot" or "chs". We released the stuff. After the `96 DEMOTAPE spread itself, there was a surprisingly good feedback (mostly due to an alltime hip hop smash hit glorifying drug abuse called "Schiibe im Chessel"). We formed a band in early 1997, in order to perform the shit live. Lars and Marlon were recruited for shouting and playing bass, respectively. Soon the rest of us started to sabotage Marlon`s other band, so he could practice more often with us. He hated us for this. Anyway, "practicing" these days meant heavy partying and so he stayed with us. The other band finally broke up. At our first gig, at the "elsie elf" punk squat in Basel, where we played two bad sets and freaked out, we were asked to record some tracks for the "MAIKA" vinyl compilation, which we did. Around that time, we were thrown out of the old basement, enlarged our collection of `70ies schlager and tahitian folklore LPs and toured through squats, bars and youthclubs. We did things on stage like tuning the guitar for half an hour and then play for ten minutes. However, in the middle of a swiss-tour, guitarist Fip left the band due to exhaustment and alcoohol problems. After the pain of a half a year`s pause and strange encounters with all kinds of sixstringers, we were happy when finally Michi took over as guitarist in summer 1998, he also had contributed to one of the songs on the `96 demo. In may 1999, the content of the vinyl-only-album "MAYBE MY TATTOOS ARE THE REASON SHE LEFT ME" was recorded and mixed within 48 hours. Later that year we acknowledged the difficulties of releasing a vinyl-only-album, eventhough it featured a special interactive cover artwork. Despite the fact that tons of people were buying our Tshirts at gigs (20 times as much as LP`s), we decided to keep playing a little music instead of switching totally to the clothing industry yet. We started releasing the "SPECK-ZINE" in april 2000; a free 40 page magazine of peculiar size (a size given by the premise to produce one 40 page magazine out of one DIN A4 sheet) featuring interviews, cartoons, strange lifeguides, rumors, cooking advices, exclusive dirty pictures, seducing prosa, upcoming gigs and no ads. Every half a year there has been a further issue and an increasing number of copies of the "SPECK-O-POLITAN" up to now. No-one knows when it`s going to stop. Since we`ve succeeded to get gigs outside of walking distance from our homes, Speck declared "dirty Harry", an old black van completely equipped with a little bedroom and a fast-drive Voodoo temple, as their new home. For our drive-by gigs (3-minute guerilla sets upon unexpecting audiences), other vans are used. In 2001, a live-cut of our concert at the B-Scene-Festival in Basel was released on CD (SPECK LIVE AT B-SCENE). We toured through Austria, Germany and Poland in Oktober 2001, setting the score for non-stop-driving with a 21 hour drive between two gigs, and the score for wasting time with the guys from the border, with 4 hours. In early 2002 we released the SUPERDISCOUNT BOOTLEG 2001, featuring 27 tracks in 17 minutes, recorded at our basement. ATREE IN A FIELD RECORDS (ATIAF) was started in early 2002 by Marlon, to release stuff like SPECK, his project COMBINEHARVESTER, the Speck side-project SCHORF and more. In September 2002, Speck recorded the songs for the mini album HONEST WORDS AND BROKEN KNUCKLES, which was released on ATIAF a year later (due to accumulation of bad luck and other difficult circumstances). The CD single EN ESTE TREN NO HAY SALIDA / NIGHTTRAIN TO LAMAMINI, featuring a Speck tune, as well as a brutal Latino Version and a XL-dub remix by Nielz, was released on ATIAF in June 2003 under the name SYSTEMATIC PROVOCATIONS EXPAND CULTURAL KNOWLEDGE. In 2003, we contributed to the international vinyl compilation THE 7 INCH STUNT RECORD, VOL.1 on ATIAF and to the Fear Of God tribute compilation CONTROLLED BY FEAR, on Mexican label Goatsucker Records. We toured through Switzerland, Austria, Holland, Belgium, England and France in September/October 2003. During a really big open-air performance in our home town, we deliberately left the stage AFTER the drumset left it, because - as it seemed at that time - you get ignored if you are politely adressing your concernes to the event manager about having to play on a wrecky rental drum set. Since then it is rumored that SPECK made big money and always smash their instruments on stage, which isn't true. We continued to play shows with basically the same 30 songs for the next year to come, until we had a nervous breakdown and couldn't hear them anymore. So in spring 2005 we cancelled all shows and stopped doing concerts. We are currently busy writing new songs, finishing new recordings, travelling to far away islands, touring as musicians for other bands, etc. Speck's Friend Space Speck has 110 friends.
