Bio : July 2002: St. Louis-bred fivesome Story Of The Year (then known as BigBlue Monkey) hits the stage at the Phoenix, Arizona stop of the Vans Warped Tourin the Peoria Sports Complex. But, theres no real stage rather, the groupis crammed onto a rickety platform thats relegated to a remote corner of thevenue. Although temperatures are well north of 103 degrees and the assembledaudience is largely unfamiliar with the band, Story Of The Year doesnt justplay the songs on the setlist they live for it and deliver. July 2004: Story Of The Year hits the stage of the Vans Warped Tour, though thistime its on decidedly different terms for starters, theyre playing themain stage. Thousands of dedicated fans rush to the front in an effort to gain aglimpse of the group well before the first note is even heard. Precisely as theyddone two years prior, the fivesome doesnt just play the songs on the setlist they live for it and deliver. Its this remarkable consistency thats embedded within the collectivemindset of Story Of The Year. Though theyre musicians first, the band alsotakes time out for a bit of good, sometimes-not-so-clean fun and games. Youcant be serious for too long, says bassist Adam Russell. And its this well-balanced attitude thats worked to the benefit of thegroup, particularly in the success of 2003s near platinum, Maverick debut Page Avenue. The next several months post- Page Avenue s release were filled withwhirlwind blurs of touring stints, both domestic and international, interruptedby mere days of rest. In fact, Story Of The Year wouldnt have a significantbreak from the road until the end of 2004, when it came time to write and recordtheir follow-up to Page Avenue. Writing sessions began almost immediately after the bands touring cycleended. We pretty much got together in the winter and just started working itlike a 40-hour-a-week job, Marsala says. Most of the writing took place atguitarist Ryan Phillips house, whose residence also doubled as the bandspractice studio. With songwriting sessions wrapped up, the band joined forces with veteranproducer Steve Evetts (Snapcase, Hatebreed) to begin tracking their new album.[He recorded] a lot of old records that I grew up listening to, some of myfavorite records of all time, says Marsala of Evetts. Thats one of themain reasons why a bunch of us were like, Yeah, we should talk to this guyand see if hes cool. And the first time we met with him, it was likeinstantly good chemistry. He really knew what we were trying to go for and weall agreed and were on the same page. We felt like we were always a little heavier than [ Page Avenue ]sounded, he adds. Live, we always played heavier than our record actuallysounded, so we wanted to try and capture our live sound on this record. Capturing Story Of The Years stage sonics also meant being physically able toperform on record as the band had done on tour. During initial tracking sessionsfor Josh Wills drums in a Chicago studio, Marsala, Phillips, guitarist PhilipSneed and bassist Adam Russell performed alongside Wills, making sure toincorporate all their stage maneuvers. We did the drums with everyone in the room and we were actually jumping andstuff!, says Marsala. It was really cool, we acted like we were playing ashow. Even Steve was in the room, rockin out with us. And when the drum sessions were complete, Wills made it a point to let everyoneknow. On the last take for the last song on the record, Josh stabbed theheads of drums with his drumstick, pushed his drums over and we were allscreaming, Russell recalls. We were feeling the fire! That same fire blazed its way back to St. Louis, as Story Of The Year continuedits sessions at what became the primary recording studio for the new album Phillips practice room. Its just a big room, so we can run around and sweat in there, saysMarsala. We made it really soundproof and with ProTools now, you can recordanything anywhere. We did guitars, bass and vocals all in our practice room. Itseasier because youre at home, you can spend more time, you dont have todrive anywhere or go anywhere. The band spent plenty of time at their new studio, mostly recording, but attimes, blowing off a little steam with plenty of pranks much like the sortfound on their recent DVD release, Live at the Lou/Bassassins liketossing snap bags at each other. (Dont try this at home!) Phil took off his shirt, and I was throwing handfuls of em at him,Russell says. He was like, Dude, throw two more! I eventually threwlike 15 at his chest and he ended up with all these red marks. We took a bigstraw and started shooting them at each other. Weeks later, Story Of The Year finalized their sophomore Maverick full-length,aptly dubbed In The Wake Of Determination. We were really excited towrite a new record, we knew exactly what we wanted to do, and we knew how wewanted to come across, says Marsala. We were just really determined, so itseemed as if the title worked really well. That was our mindset the entire time. Firing off with the first single, We Dont Care Anymore, In The WakeOf Determination immediately finds Story Of The Year on a full-throttlecourse throughout its dozen tracks. The track offers tight, synchronized guitarriffing interspersed with broad choruses, and according to Marsala is about thepressure of making a second record for a band like us, or just the pressure inanyones life, you know. Having to follow up to your first record, you cantruin what you already had, or else your band will be over. We could worry aboutall these things and have the pressure get to us, or we can do things forourselves, do it the way we want to do it, and just have fun doing it. Five Against The World finds Story Of The Year reflecting on its successand accomplishments over the past couple years. These are good days and wellremember this stuff for the rest of our lives, Marsala says. Were happyto see where weve gone. We never thought wed get as far as we did. Itsjust an awesome thing. As one of the most propulsive tracks on In The Wake Of Determination , Jarheadrecalls the hyper-tempo bursts of the legendary East Coast hardcore scene. Asits title might suggest, Jarhead also points out miscreants whose solepurpose is to cause a commotion. From my whole life of going to shows and over the last few years of playingshows, youd see those guys in the crowd who you could tell arent there forthe music whatsoever, says Marsala. Theyre just there to beat up asmany kids as they can. But its not only about going to shows; its aboutany random, tough guy who thinks hes tougher than any other guy in the world.He takes his aggression out to prove how cool he is. Why are you here? Werehere to have a good time, not to try and fight people. In addition to having a good time, Story Of The Year also has plenty of reasonto celebrate. And looking back at the bands roots as a hard-working,independent operation, Marsala understands just how much the bands hard workand effort has finally paid off. It helps that we were that band that nobody knew and wed try to go aroundand sell our CD, Marsala recalls. Especially on Warped Tour, I see a lotof bands do this now but at the time we were one of the only bands thatwould walk out there and try to put headphones on peoples heads and sell themour CDs. Its good to have that background of working like that, just toappreciate how lucky you are to make it as far as you did. After all, such determination (interspersed with an ounce of good humor) isntjust the story of the year its the story of a lifetime. I can't get the player to recognize my playlist - To make sure I'm not a dumbass I copied his code and put it on my MySpace... It worked perfectly. I replaced the URL of the playlist with the URL of mine - It showed up but only had one song - Linkin Park... I don't even have Linkin Park in my playlist.xml list. Here is my playlist.xml file - http://gabeshedd.com/myspace/music/playlist.xml I opened both this person's and mine in two seperate tabs and viewed them side by side. Completely identical. I am honestly mind-blown by this... Help. Please. All files are mp3 or WMA .... EDIT-> Okay... I read some other threads on this topic (I didn't think to search for Linkin Park at first) - I uploaded the playlist.xml file to a different server... Still gives me that Linkin Park song. I'm so insanely confused. Where does it get Linkin Park from? There's no link to another playist.. All those flower vendors, cheesy TV specials and grotesque toasts to womanhood triggered fantasies of cutting off my lady friend's head and storing it in the back of the freezer, behind the Gzhel and the sack of frozen broccoli. There was only one way to avenge this evil: celebrate March 8th with a whore. Not another newspaper whore from our page 23, but a whore picked from an open-air market. So hold on to your latex gloves, folks, cuz I'm a-gonna take you back to March 8th, that magical, enchanting holiday celebrating the mystery and gift of Women. Before we go there I want to take this opportunity to make an aside. Thank God there is no Women's Day holiday in America. I can imagine the layers of irony and suppressed desperation that such a holiday would bring out. The whole inter-gender sickness would gurgle out of the social sewer grill every year on cue: "Oh, I'm sooooo happy you're celebrating me. Tchya, as if." "This holiday is so sexist, you know? No, just kidding! I don't really give a shit about some stupid holiday, you know? I'm not into that whole PC thing?" "No, really, it's okay. Forget it, you know? It's not the holiday that I care about, it's just...forget it, nothing." But why do I torture us both, readers, with horrible reminders of the Repression? We're not in America. Let's move on with our lives. In Russia it's impossible to avoid Women's Day. I used to do the gentlemanly thing and call all the women in my life to wish them all the usual: chlamydia, breast cancer, cellulite... This year I was going for a clean slate. No phone calls. No women. Just a whore. Rudnitsky and I called a taxi at about 9:30 p.m. on Women's Day evening. I instructed the driver to take us to the nocturnal whore colonies that come out to feed on that block of Leninsky Prospekt between Oktyabrskaya metro and Gagarin Ploschad. "Going for sluts?" the burly driver asked. "Yes." The mission cheered our driver up - I always expect Russian taxi drivers to get nationalistic and protective over their womenfolk when I ask them to take me to whore markets, but the opposite is always true: they look at you as a real bloke and often go the extra mile for you. "I don't think you'll find anything on Leninsky now," he suggested. "We should go to the Moskva." "They're too expensive there," I said. He shrugged. We wasted a half hour trawling Leninsky before giving up and going to the Moskva. "I'm telling you, the only hope is the Moskva at this time," he said. "Okay, let's do it." There, a mamochka -- an over-the-hill whore in sweat pants, parka and cap -- waited near the former Dikii Loschad restaurant, bouncing just off the curb. She told us to follow a white Moskvich which was parked just ahead of us. We followed the Moskvich to the Lubyanka bus stop across from the FSB headquarters. The Moskvich stopped in front of a group of dirty Russian cars: one mini-van and two Ladas. This was the tochka. Another mamochka approached, this one younger and Asiatic. "We've got 70, 100 and 150," she said. "Which do you want to see?" "100," I said. Suddenly it was like that scene from the keystone cops: about thirty girls piled out impossibly from cars that should only hold a total of five, then lined up in a semi-circle before our headlights like trained dogs, or like slaves on an auction block. One girl looked enticing: a shy, extremely thin village girl with a big head, big eyes and a terrible hairdo. The problem was she looked too young and skittish. To get the whore-r story for this issue, I needed an older girl who'd been through the hard knocks, a girl with tales to tell. The rest of the 100-dollar line-up looked like something out of the Star Wars bar scene. "Let's see the 150's," I told the mamochka. She shooed the 100 girls back into the sardine pack. Would they be punished, ruined, hurt by the rejection? One should be horrified by the thought, yet for some reason, one got rather aroused. The 150s weren't much better. I chose a tall girl with long black hair and exotic Cossack eyes. Her red vinyl boots went up to her knees. Her name was Alla and she came from Kiev. Rudnitsky seemed to like her and I was wasted enough to listen to him. She must have some interesting whore-r stories to share. When I brought her to my apartment I asked her about the expected upcoming war in Iraq. "Do you think America has gone crazy?" I asked. "Do you think we're aggressive and arrogant, or do you think we have the right to take out Saddam Hussein?" "It is necessary to get rid of him," she said matter-of-factly. "So you support Bush and America?" "Of course," she said. "Hussein is terrible. Who needs people like that in the world?" "But most Russians think that America has gone crazy, turned aggressive." "Get rid of those people too." "Get rid of the Russians who oppose America's war?" "Of course, get rid of them. They complain about everything. They're not civilized." The only thing more exciting than a cute girl who advocates war and concentration camps is when said chick is a whore you've just purchased for the next several hours. On International Women's Day! But the joke was on me. After this auspicious opening, it was all downhill with Alla. She didn't want to drink. She had a bad attitude. When a whore doesn't drink, usually it means she's got a bad attitude. "When did you come out to Moscow?" I asked. "In December." "Did you work as a prostitute in Kiev as well?" "No." "So why did you come to Moscow?" "Work." "Is it better here than in Kiev?" "More money." "Do you miss Kiev?" "Yes." "You're not married?" "No." "How did you find out about the work here?" "A friend in Kiev who worked here told me about it." "Why did you need the money?" I asked. "It's personal. It's not pleasant. Has to do with Kiev." "Do you have a baby?" "No. I take care of my mother and younger sister. It's not pleasant." "Where's your father?" I asked. "I haven't seen him since I was six. Do I have to keep answering? Enough!" I'm starting to think, there's a pattern here when it comes to fathers and Warsaw Pact whores. I've always known that if I ever had children, I'd flee. The guilt would kill me, I can't lie. So the best thing is to not have a child, period. No child, no problem. But what if I had a child, a daughter, and I fled, and my abandoned daughter bloomed into a whore? Wouldn't that be a good thing, bringing joy to the lives of so many empty, exhausted, pathetic men incapable of love or intimacy? Shouldn't I feel pride, rather than guilt, if my daughter became a whore? Of course! Folks, I'm throwing out my condoms tomorrow. Delinquent fatherhood, here I come! Alla wanted to speed things up. She took her whore's bath and lay on my bed. She blew me with a condom. I barely felt it. We had sex. I don't remember much.
