Journal Archives Destinations Journal Pimp My Safari: As ready as it will ever be “As ready as it’ll ever be”, is an apt description of a little side-project of mine just launched, Pimp My Safari.com . Its been a pet project for many months, and was started as a reaction to all the sites cataloguing Firefox extensions. Many excellent plugins for Safari have been developed, but because Safari doesn’t have an official ‘extension architecture’, many are unaware of these extensions. This is where PimpMySafari comes in – a resource for the pimping of your copy of Safari no less! Its just intended to be a simple, functional, information-based site. I’m not giving it a whole lot of time design-wise, its not the purpose. I just wanted a central place to promote these add-ons. I haven’t even bothered testing in IE, but I have given it a scant look in Mozilla. So here’s my plan. All the Safari related browser talk will now go to Pimp My Safari, leaving this blog returning to matters of design, css, music and family. Those few who are interested in such things can now read them there. When meeting people at SXSW, I often found myself apologising for running a dull browser-based blog. I shouldn’t have to, but I did feel a little embarrassed. I’m still rather wary of blogging about my family, I’d like to do it more than I do, but I just don’t feel comfortable doing it. I wish it weren’t the case, but the internet isn’t an appropriate/safe place for such things – there are nutters out there. Anyway, I digress… A quick word about the CMS When I started this, many months ago, I was using WordPress 1.5 nightlies (I wanted to make sure that I wasn’t missing out on anything). While I was very impressed with how far it had come since the last time I’d evaluated it (1.1), it was a relief to get back to Textpattern, and thats what I’ve used for the final site. I don’t think its just a case of being familiar with it. It just worked the way I wanted it to, and enabled me to easily run the entire site. So there we go, I hope someone finds it useful. I’d love it if people felt like contributing, so let me know if you feel the urge! I now have somewhere to go to for this kind of information. Great work Jon. Saft being the only thing I use with Safari, you have yet again opened my doors to a whole arena of plugins. Thanks! :) #1 Sam 296 days ago It looks really good. Maybe ill start using safari more often now. #2 Oscar 296 days ago Very nice work Jon. As for blogging about your family, just change their names when you write about them. It will be seamless. You know, your little girl, uh, Brandy, and the boy, er, Son. Yeah, that works. And your loving wife, Betty Paige. You could even throw in a couple of crazy American neighbors, one whose short with a really long, often confused name, and the other with an absurd red beard. Main, this just writes itself. I smell sitcom! #3 Jason Santa Maria 296 days ago Great stuff Jon, maybe you can convince me that Safari is the Mac equivalent of IE!! #4 John Oxton 296 days ago Thanks, Jon! Now I have somewhere to point my friends who recently switched to Mac and have no idea where to find all these extensions, and nice list for myself… ;) Good job! By the way, there is small mistake in your code, in the right sidebar the parts of text are outside the P tag and the P tag follows them, but it is empty. ;) #5 Raven 296 days ago That should read: Safari ISN’T the Mac equivalent of IE!! #6 John Oxton 296 days ago Hello. I’ve visited here a lot, but never had anything to say. First, I love your designs. Second, just wanted to tell you that on high resolutions (1600×1200) on a Windows Firefox install, the ”*e*” in “contribute” shows on the far left of the screen. I assume this is because you used text-indent: -1000px; Maybe -3000px; would fix it. Excellent site you have here :-) #7 Ian Spence 296 days ago Great work on this site Jon. I didn’t realize that there were so many great plugins available for Safari. #8 Jeff Smith 296 days ago To continue on what Ian Spence wrote, on a 1920×1200 resolution, you can see the blue text links for “Blog” and “Contribute” on the far left. #9 chris rhee 296 days ago It looks different than I expected, but it has a certain dignified simplicity to it, and the safari logo looks great, so that picks it up a notch. You’ve taken a step toward building a network of your very own, ala 9rules. #10 Scott 296 days ago Very cool Jon, I was getting antsy about the release of the site. It turned out very well indeed. I think maybe an all in one Mac browser site would have been better. Your opinion of the browser is fascinating and I wish you’d post even more about them :) I know how you feel about posting about your family on the internet, instead of using their names just say son, daughter and wifey. I felt a bit worried when I posted a few pics of my family on Flickr but I learnt not to worry so much. #11 Chris McElligott 296 days ago Found another bug (Win/FF1.0.1): Your list (or whatever you want to call it) for the top entry, Saft 7.6.0, isn’t displaying right on the main page. Instead of the list, I’m getting h4. New in 7.6.0: * Improvement: Search set to group shortcuts and search multiple search engines at same time * Improvement: Make Growl sticky flag customizable * Bug fix: Crash in rare conditions related to many undoes and switching on/off undo support * Bug fix: Problem with Reset Safari button in kiosk mode Perhaps it’s just a filter the software applies to things on the main page? #12 Jordan 296 days ago Jordan, It looks like that on all browsers I’ve seen it with. Looks like Textile markup isn’t being parsed on the main page. #13 Tony 296 days ago When should we expect pimpmyblog.com to become active? :) #14 Rob Scriva 295 days ago You should make the silver casing to the Safari logo all gold. You know, like its all pimped out. And maybe add a few diamonds to the face of the compass. Right now the site is feeling decidedly non-pimpish. #15 Kevin 295 days ago Yeah, make it something like this: http://people.zeelandnet.nl/marco/pimpzilla/ (screenshot at http://people.zeelandnet.nl/marco/pimpzilla/images/pimpzilla.jpg) #16 Jordan 295 days ago I had thought about that style, but time is against me. Besides its about macs – so minimal is the order of the day, right? #17 Jon Hicks 295 days ago I thought pimping was the order of the day. #18 Kevin 295 days ago Nah, Information, and having a life is the order of the day. I prefer it this way. #19 Jon Hicks 295 days ago Nice work Jon. Now it’s going to be just a little tougher to decide which browser to click on each time I go to my dock. Safari? Omniweb? Camino? Firefox? IE 5.2? Kidding. By the way, I love what you’ve done with your comments design. #20 Garrett 295 days ago Jon, Aren’t you worried that Apple might come down on you for using the Safari icon? #21 Scott Johnson 295 days ago I’ve switched back to Safari as my default browser in order to give the site a try. #22 Ryan 295 days ago Nice. As far as I can see, it works great here in FF 1.0.1/Win. Except for one thing. The textarea on the contact page seem to be wider than the page an go all out far to the right, which makes a horizontal scrollbar peek out and say hi. #23 Andreas Graulund 295 days ago In the distance you can hear wailing and gnashing of teeth Jon… why have you forsaken me!? I thought we had… something, you, me and WordPress? I just don’t know if I can take this… I’m going to curl up in my sock drawer and sleep for a week. Nice job on the pimpin site by the way. ;) #24 Chris J. Davis 294 days ago Sorry Chris – I just couldn’t do it all in Wordpress how I wanted to. It came very close though! #25 Jon Hicks 294 days ago Love the site and design, love it. Thanks for the pointers on OS X goodies. #26 Jan 293 days ago I love it! As usual with all your work Jon, it’s great.. And handy too. No more googling for Safari stuff. I might even start to use it again instead of Firefox #27 Rutger 292 days ago That’s a great resource Jon, well done! As far as Textpattern, I tried it but found it too frustrating to get certain things done. But it still has one of the best admin interfaces out there I’ll give them that. #28 Heiser Erwin 292 days ago Great site; informative, and it’s very easy to use. You the best Hicks! [offtopic]hehe, thanks for inspiring me to implement Gravatar for my re-designed site. I’m loving it![/offtopic] #29 Tom 292 days ago Well done! The animals loved the land under the moon, but were held captive by their owners, facing certain extinction and doom. Then in one common moment and in houses all separate, a turn for the truly bizarre did happen. A Cock, A Quack, An Ass and A Pig all were, at once, kicked out of their digs. Left to fend for themselves and somehow survive, a story unfolded of fantastical size. In the hind site of things, it's easily said, their exile was a blessing, not a curse instead. For they knew from the onset that abandon's bereft and banishment's bitter, still the 4 misfit minstrels had always longed for something better. The Cock kicked out of his warm hay strewn lair because he was obstinate and nasty and no longer welcome there. The Quack, it was said, was born with a wrong colored head: mistaken for female, not mallard instead. The Ass's knees always trembled and he could bare no load, so he was soon to be killed, eaten or sold. The pig was a pig and ate up all the food. His hungry owners put their foot down, "This Pig is No Good!" Outcast and isolated, they happened upon each other on a long windy road. All decided they could make pace quicker if together, not alone. And so they banded together, brothered and bound, and by surprise they discovered they could all make one sound! The Ass beat the drums, The Quack plucked the Guitar, The Pig played the bass & The Cock, loud and lurid, manned the axe and the mic. And so quacked the Quack, "We're lost! Where should we go? Will it be to or will it be throw?" The Ass hee -hawed, "Hee - Haw, I do not know!" The Pig snorted, "Snort, let's find a trough on the quick; I need something to eat or soon I'll start licking the shit off my feet." Then the Cock crowed out, "You dimwitted drolls, you're missing the beat. Being lost is not our problem! It's straight-up sweet! Lets be glad to be lost and neither found nor confined. It's better to be bumbling and losing our way than trapped by convention and minding owner's say. Lets NOT be found, let's be free instead. If we're discovered and directed, we're better off dead. Our doodle-do is decided. Our destination is Nowhere. Nowhere is our goal. Besides, I can kick up some scratch where ever we go" The Ass Ee-ah'ed, "Okee Dokee, we're set. We'll be lost, like in love and in thought and creative peak, not lost like in traffic jams waiting to take a leak." "That's right," Oinked the pig who ate up a worm, "We'll take every exit and welcome each turn." From that time forth The Refugees set off happily enroute, hunting for nothing of the expected, prescribed or suggested. Expectations abandoned, thoughts not of wrong, full of gay and glee; they carried on with a new song. Then in a gast a devil dropped in o'er their heads - he breathed out fire, branded irons and said, "Oh musical minstrels, I know where you should go: Follow this map and it will surely reward you." "What have you in hand?" asked the Cock as he hardened his head. "It's the answer to your questions." The Devil firmly said. "It's a map to a place where all will know your songs, where you can be rich, adorned and do no wrong." The Cock looked closer, and saw that the map clearly read "The Menagerie to Dumbassery." And shouted out-loud, "This is no place for me!" In response the devil howled and roared, "It will save you from this aimless place where your songs have no name. Now, follow it by the number and you will find your fame." So he threw it at the misfits and it burned at their touch. And they all threw it down into a gully or gulch. The devil was pissed, and his flame flickered out. And the band nodded in agreeance and continued enroute. They carried on with a new song. Then a Big White Rat appeared, holding a magic eight ball under his wiry whiskers. He shook the shiny sphere and said, "You're to follow this map! No question, no bickers. It says on my ball that it's certain, it's true. Don't ask again, The Menagerie of Dumbassery is the place for you!" The Ass kicked the rat and The Pig licked his beard. And the band felt stronger and traveled on without fear. They carried on with a new song. All of a sudden a stench wrapped 'round them and grew. The Pig Oinked out, "I know stank but fucking P-U!" The Quack quacked in, "For Stink' sake it's true! I've been pinned up in barnyards and squeaked out a few. But if I know one thing for certain, this smell is FOWL!" The Cock and The Ass smelled it too. They winced, and plugged their noses and then heard a horrible growl. From behind a juniper a Bigfoot appeared. He was as scary in sight as his smell had foretold. He gnashed his terrible teeth, and showed terrible claws, and the band cringed in confusion, in horror and awe. Bigfoot pound his hairy chest and bellowed, "Follow this map, you miserable minstrels. If you don't go to the Menagerie of Dumbassery, then I'll eat you all up, your lips, toes and assholes." The Cock & The Quack looked up in an instance and saw a pack of Eagles flying in from the distance. The Eagles landed in unison and pecked at the Bigfoot. They shat on his fur and fuzzied his vision. The Bigfoot lost his footing and fell down on the path, and the flurry of Eagles laughed and played with the band. "But wait," interrupted the Ass, "What if that Beast, that Monster wakes up? And comes looking, finds and make dinner of us?" The Cock reassured, as he usually did, "We'd smell him coming, make a plan and of him we'd rid." They carried on with a new song. A Fun Machine came spinning and crossed their way. And hooted and hollered at the minstrels, "Hip Pop- Hop Hooray! Take this map! Follow the way! In fact, my little minstrels hop on board, I'll take you there, with potions and poisons and not a worry or care!!" The Quack bobbed his head and asked his band, "Maybe a good idea? Should we take a ride?" But before they could answer, the Fun Machine took a shit and died. They carried on with a new song. Then a bitch and a wolf crossed the lane, and they looked friendly, if a slight bit insane. A trace of foam was still round their mouths, but the minstrels saw the froth was in the shape of a smile. The Bitch spoke up, as she usually did, and the Cock ruffled his feathers in kinship bid, "We're too wise to fight," she said and continued, "Everyone already knows that our bark is worse than our bite. So we've settled on kindness in wicked's wake. But, Be Warned! Dear misfits, don't discount us quick, we both keep our teeth sharp for safety's sake." "Where are you going?" asked the Wolf. "And what do you do?" "We're going Nowhere answered the Cock. "And we've written a song or two." The Pig explained, "But Beasts and Monsters keep getting in our way. And we are defending ourselves both night and day." The Ass snorted out, "T'is true what Pig Said. The Menagerie of Dumbasserie, keeps rearing its head." "We know of this place," said the Bitch, we've left it ourselves. And know for certain it's best avoided, full of bloodsuckers and snails, leeches and witches and trouble galore, if you go there you'll leave with a mountain of sores. So, let us hear these songs," said the Wolf and the Bitch. "Eee- Awlright," said the Ass, scratching an itch. The band played their songs and the moonlight grew brighter. And the sounds of the desert got quiet and quieter. And the Beasts and The Monsters were all held at bay as the music rang out they'd written along the way. "You have no worries no more," said the Bitch and Wolf did summarize, "for what you have here are Lullabies to Paralyze." Do you hear the silence of the evil around us? Your songs have conquered all the vicious and venomous. Neither Beasts nor Monsters can bar your path. Hear now, Misfit Minstrels, your music has freed you at last! You can stay here safely in the land of music and the moon, or travel about freely as long as you play your tunes!" They Carried On with A new song. But all the while, The Ass staid afraid. What would happen, he wondered, if Bigfoot showered and shaved? How would they smell him coming while they were tucked in their beds? And might they wake up, not as musicians but as carcass instead? Soon they forgot, immersed in their song, until a harsh realm came 'round. The stank of the Big, the putrid, the foul, messed with their gig. But The Monster, oh no, rather an old lady they knew not as friend or foe. Approaching The Cock, The Quack, The Ass and The Pig, one whiff enough to rattled their digs. "Why not?" said The Cock, and spoke to hag: "Don't bother real minstrels with a path, we've been through it and t'is fully daft." "Eeeeaaaaaawwwhhphhhht" she puffed and she pissed, her tongue forked but sagged - oh how the 4 gagged. On this tongue's end stuck the sad map, and antacid reflux tossed it upon this hag's lap. Whew the stank from that scroll - traces of Bigfoot, the Rat and the Toad. The creatures appeared and looked weird, exposed as dumbasses unable the 4 to harass. Old lady rose up and swallowed dumbasses whole, scampering off in search of another soul Until she tripped. And she died. Cuz as we said she was old. THE END.
