Good? Bad? Indifferent? I'm not sure where I stand on this right now. In one way, I can see the benefit for a band who wants to get thier name out there, but at the same time, it seems so ingenuine. I'd just like to hear what everyone else has to say about it. I often wonder when I stumble across someone's profile and it shows something like 55000 friends in the profile. _________________ Mike McKaigg www.LoNero.net www.MikeMcKaigg.com www.myspace.com/mikemckaigg Back to top Amethya Bar Band Joined: 20 Oct 2005 Posts: 386 Location: Murfreesboro, TN Posted: Fri Dec 23, 2005 4:28 pm Post subject: I recently deleted 101 people off of my friend's list. Most of them asked me to be thier friend and then I never heard from them. It was getting to the point where it was too much trouble to search for the people I wanted to talk to over all the clutter. That and if I did get a bulletin they cycled so fast I didn't see most of them. My point being, if I'm in a band and trying to make an impression, whoring is not a good impression. Publicity is one thing. I'm an advertising major, trust me I know about publicity. But if your going to add a ton of people put a little research into it. Find people who for one already like your style of music and ask them personally to check you out and add you if they like. Don't put up a bulletin with your "add" link on it and expect other people to do your dirty work for you. Why the hell would I want to support you when you can't even take the time to genuinely ask me for my support yourself. You don't see Hershey's taking time in their commercials to push Dr. Pepper's product. It's one thing if it comes straight from the source, or it is a close recomendation. But this hey this group asked me to post this so they can get as many adds as possible bullshit is stupid. Fuck you! Grow some balls and find your own damn fans. Bill personally asked me to be a friend of his and LoNero so I checked out the site and added you guys. One because I liked the music. Two because some guy all the way in California took the time to find me, go to my page and personally request me. That speaks way more to me about the caliber of this band than some generic, unfeeling bulletin train. _________________ I am the giver of shit, submit to my will! I've actually done a little "house cleaning" in my friends list too. If I don't hear from them or, if I send them a message and they never respond, they're gone. I see the temptation, but it's not worth it. I just got two more "whore train" messages today and promptly deleted the user from my list. Thanks for your input Britney!! Have a very Merry Christmas too! I guess it can be tempting for some, but like Britney said here, do your research, find your own fans. You Rock Britney!!!! Thanks to all of you for supporting us the way you do. It means so much to the four of us that there are people like you who love music as art. The way it should be. The posts you folks put here on the forum are often topics of conversation when we get together for rehearsals. Whenever we see clubs giving preference to cover or "tribute" bands, or people telling us "you'll never get anywhere without a singer", we look at the comments on our MySpace profiles, fan emails, forum posts and especially meeting people at our shows and are reminded that we are doing something that is touching people. That's why we do what we do. _________________ Mike McKaigg www.LoNero.net www.MikeMcKaigg.com www.myspace.com/mikemckaigg Back to top Amethya Bar Band Joined: 20 Oct 2005 Posts: 386 Location: Murfreesboro, TN Posted: Sat Dec 24, 2005 5:24 am Post subject: Anything worth while in this life takes time and effort. If you lower your standards expect a lowered happiness. Keep doing things your way and stay true to your ideals and it will either come or it won't but atleast you know that you stood your ground and stood up for your beliefs. Besides you guys are good people, talented musicians and make people feel good. What more could you want? _________________ I am the giver of shit, submit to my will! I started playing guitar in seventh grade. Cut my teeth on Metallica and the up and coming grunge stuff, (Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam) whatever Guitar World magazine was tabbing out in the early nineties. Then I got caught smoking weed a bunch of times freshman year of high school and by the time I got off grounding all my friends were hippies, or at least doing there best to look like them. So black jeans became corduroys, NIN albums became Phish bootlegs, and I tried to relearn everything I didn't pay attention to in my guitar lessons and become Trey Anastasio. Mostly just got high alot, though. After high school I went to SIU Edwardsville, Carbondale's ugly sister to the west. More drugs. Was told by SIUE's head of jazz guitar not to bother with his program or waste his time. This is a guy who bills himself as a virtuoso. Easy, buddy. At the end of my freshman year I met a lunatic named Matt Meinert at a party. I played along while he sang the likes of John Prine, Lowell George, and Bob Dylan, and we clicked. The next year we got a house together and started playing gigs around town, though I had never played lead guitar, I quickly got my trial by fire and came out alright. We played together for three years and several different projects, and pulled off some impressive gigs in and around St. Louis, but almost nothing recorded, aside from a few home videos and random 4-track ramblings. Then we got caught growing uh, indoor vegetables, and both had to move out of town. He went to Springfield, Il, I went back to Chicago. I quickly realized that being a decent young guitar player in a small town means jack shit in Chicago, where there are 17 year olds that can play circles around me, so I sort of put it down for a while, and got back into hip hop. Now I know that sounds lame and white boyish, but to any Chicagoan around my age that knows about the Jukebox, I need not say more. For those who don't, the Jukebox was a music video station in the late 80's early 90's that you could only get if you wedged your TV dial (yes it had to be a dial) between channel 23 and 24. Most of what they played was early hip hop, so without realizing it, I had a pipeline to what most little white kids didn't and still don't: GOOD hip hop. Point being, I hooked back up with Ben Schlitz, a high school buddy who was studying art in Milwaukee and rapping on the side. We collaborated on one of his art projects that incorporated music, and a partnership was born. Soon after, I helped him build his studio and since, he's released three hip hop albums, two of which I was blessed to be a part of. My musical itch came back, and I signed up at the Bloom School of Jazz in downtown Chicago at age 23. David Bloom is a lot of things, good and not so great, but he is a fantastic teacher and group leader. At the school, I found myself part of an 8 piece jazz combo performing original tunes at legendary places like The Green Mill and the Jazz Showcase. Whether I deserved it or not, it was an amazing experience. At the same time I started a neighborhood band with some friends, including drummer Mike Barry. Mike and I stuck together through a funk/disco group that went through bass players like toilet paper, and eventually morphed into a country/folk/pop type deal that found me behind a microphone for the first time ever, less than a year ago. That group has since dissolved but since nobody threw a bottle at me for ruining their hearing, I decided to keep singing, and I've decided through all the influences I've picked up since coming back to Chicago, be it jazz, hip hop, house, that I want to sing the stuff I was playing with Matt Meinert, the person who got me on stage in the first place. So for now, that's what I'm doing. Matt Gandurski's Friend Space Matt Gandurski has 100 friends.
