Of course, this statement is itself a generalisation,and tens of poems, novels, and films can be found to challenge it,justly. One example which springs to mind, from recent lecture, isJan Dobraczynski's short story "Agonia Mokotowa" ("The Agony ofMokotów"). 1 Yet despite the many exceptions which prove the rule, easily identifiableblack and white hats abound in the literature of the Second World War. Asthere are few black and white situations in life, it is always refreshingto come across a work which challenges stereotypes. One such work isHeinrich Böll's early novella, Der Zug war pünktlich ( The Train was On Time , 1949). This story is a masterpiece formany reasons. Chief among them is the way that the author consciously,and consecutively, attacks Polish and German stereotypes in order toexpose the harmful artificiality of national and ethnic accidentia considered from the perspective of the Kingdom of God: the foundationupon which the European spirit is supposedly based. This paper aims at considering this scribal strategy of the great Nobelprize-winner. Although most of our critical faculties will be concentratedon Böll's novella, we will also refer to Krzysztof Zanussi's Drogiposród nocy ( Wege in der Nacht, Roads Through theNight , 1979), as a "litmus" or control text. Both of these works dealwith seemingly incongruous love affairs: German soldiers falling in lovewith Polish women during the Second World War. At the show tonight, as they were cycling though, I kept getting excited seeing Reggie and the Full Effect and Punchline, both of which are gonna be before I move... And then I'd see the flyer for the show you guys are playing with Anti-Flag and even though I'm not even gonna be here for it, I was still saying, "Man I'm so excited about that. ...oh, wait."
