They were later joined by Kjartan and when Agst left the band after the recording of Agtis Byrjun in order to pursue a career in graphic design, he was replaced by Orri. Sigur Rs hail from Iceland, and rightly claim to bring you the beautiful landscape of their homeland with their music. It's impossible to justify it with words, you have to listen to it to understand. The band consists of Jn r (Jnsi) Birgisson (vocals, guitars), Kjartan (Kjarri) Sveinsson (keyboards), Orri Pll Drason (drums) and Georg (Goggi) Holm (bass). They create a remarkable sound considering the basic instruments used. Jnsi often uses a cello bow to play his guitar, resulting in an effects-laden, atmospheric, totally unique sound. His voice is probably the most unique thing about Sigur Rs. A falsetto somewhere between thom yorke and a choir boy. Newyorkality: March 2005 Notify Blogger about objectionable content. What does this mean? BlogThis! Monday, March 21, 2005 Welcome to the dungeon My office is dark today. It's a change, reminding me that winter is most definitely almost here and that i should be getting the tins of soup ready, waxing up my snowboard and hoping that those 8am starts at uni won't be too cold this year. I know that they will be though..i found a nice snow vest in the weekend that i might buy to keep me warm, it's pink. Work is depressing today and there is a middle manager that is hanging around pissing me off , just a minute ago he was complaining about no having any little rolls of tape, despite the equally as good medium rolls of tape that are in high levels of supply out the back. I'm looking forward to two things tonight...blow drying my hair and getting a decent amount of sleep. this isAmanda at 3:59 PM 2 blogger comments | | links to this post 2 Comments: Anonymous said... I loved them and now they are gone. Why would those corporate people at McDonalds choose to destroy a kiwi icon...So they could add those crappy 'Boss' burgers to their menu, targeted toward men? You see these days at McDonalds women are becoming oppressed, they want us to fit into their perfect little mold women have the choice of a salad or a fold over whereas men now have most of the burgers targeted toward them and they got rid of the New Zealand icon, my beloved kiwi burger. Don't get me wrong...I'm not the kind of girl that someone would ask 'Did you eat all the pies?' no, I weigh 37kgs and are fairly well toned thanks to yoga and yes I can eat whatever I want and not gain weight. So why the hell can't I go into McDonalds and eat a fatty burger...I need to do that every once in a while, I usually eat so healthy and I get cravings. oh the cravings. My little heart pounds for the day when once again I will be able to enjoy a kiwiburger at the local establishment. do you think a petition would influence them enough to bring it back? this isAmanda at 9:15 AM 0 blogger comments | | links to this post 0 Comments: Post a Comment Links to this post: See links to this post " rel="nofollow" posted by @ Create a Link Thursday, March 17, 2005 wear real pants. black ones. I'm addicted to defamer . secondly. I left my cardholder containing my credit cards, eftpos card, drivers license and AA card in Kelly's car last night thus i was late to work this morning and i have to go to uni without my drivers or any of my own money. what a bitch. Now for the actual blogging, the blogging that is not telling you things that you don't really care about anyway. I'm going to dinner at Kelly's tonight apparently his mum doesn't hate me, he asked her and she said that she's worried that because he's spending so much time with me and not so much with his friends that we'll break up and he won't have anyone to talk to. um no. I guess if she knew we're getting married she wouldn't be so concerned right? I'm so over caring about it. my next informative statement today is that i suck at virtual super 12 . If any rugby lovers would like to email me their picks weekly it would be most appreciated. this isAmanda at 10:31 AM 0 blogger comments | | links to this post 0 Comments: Post a Comment Links to this post: See links to this post " rel="nofollow" posted by @ Create a Link Tuesday, March 08, 2005 if they only knew Kelly's mum told him not to get too attached to me. oh god. this isAmanda at 4:14 PM 0 blogger comments | | links to this post 0 Comments: Post a Comment Links to this post: See links to this post " rel="nofollow" posted by @ Create a Link Monday, March 07, 2005 mcfarkwa Sitting in an internet cafe listening to my ipod, trying to get through my two hour break before my next class. I have to tell you, my marketing research lecturer is a total freak, she reminds me of a teacher I had in primary school "Miss Mcfarkwa" and yes that's her real name so you could imagine what little seven year olds would come up with she always seemed to be angry even though she may not have been, I'd be angry if i had to look after a bunch of kids all day and try to teach them things...The only thing I remember about her class was learning cursive and her suggesting that instead of scribbling out our mistakes that we simply put brackets around them (I assume so she knew what kind of mistakes that we were making) it made me misuse brackets for a full year and the teacher I had after her...Mrs.Whitefield Told us immediately to stop doing that, my marketing research lecturer is very much like Miss Mcfarkwa, She speaks in clipped tones, dresses like a primary school teacher and seems very angry, in fact in my first class this morning my friend Michael described her as just that 'the lady who looks like she should be a primary school teacher', I almost went to sleep in that lecture in which it took her an entire hour to go through our assignments. Furthermore due to the dog incident everyone is talking about the girl...It seems that her wannabe Paris Hilton tendencies are starting to piss everyone off...The fake von Dutch hat and clothing for her dog are the talk at early morning classes but I mean really should she care what people think about her?? I guess if that's your thing then it's okay. Whatever. this isAmanda at 11:33 AM 0 blogger comments | | links to this post 0 Comments: Post a Comment Links to this post: See links to this post " rel="nofollow" posted by @ Create a Link Sunday, March 06, 2005 right now and forever Over the weekend I attended the wedding of my cousin and his beautiful new wife. It was great except for the dirty little secret Kelly and I have 'just between us' and maybe three girls in Auckland, the two girls at the magazine store who served us when we purchased NZ Weddings and NZ Bride and Groom, and the smirky girl who thought for whatever reason it was hilarious that we were doing so...maybe she thought I was younger than what I actually am. Whatever Honey, I don't see the platinum princess cut diamond on your finger. Nor is it on mine actually despite going ring shopping today...The girl at Michael Hill told us that they pretty much never get rings like the one I want and they'll have to order it in, hence the buying of the magazines to find the specialty jewelers. After my cousins wedding getting married in Fiji with just a few people around looks promising, not for any particular reason, I dunno there aren't any decisions yet and there's nothing to say that in a few months time I won't be here crying over my laptop telling you all about how we broke up, but I seriously doubt it...On the way home from the wedding we stopped and found a secluded area, I guess I had a little too much to drink because sex in cars is really incredibly trashy, even if it is a BMW, I have to say Kelly is amazing, really gentle and giving or maybe he was just been careful with me however the last few days when Kelly and I have been really intimate and adventurous with eachother have definitely moved our relationship to a different place, maybe now it's not just sex, it's not just sex that could go somewhere, it's not just right now, it's right now and forever. this isAmanda at 10:03 PM 1 blogger comments | | links to this post 1 Comments: Anonymous said... Hey, you have a great blog here! I'm definitely going to bookmark you! I have a las vegas wedding site. It pretty much covers las vegas wedding related stuff. Come and check it out if you get time :-) 8:29 AM Post a Comment Links to this post: See links to this post " rel="nofollow" posted by @ Create a Link Friday, March 04, 2005 The sickness While life is going on all around me I am stuck in a horribly air conditioned office sniffing and using a million tissues an hour, popping the cold pills by the second and generally feeling pretty crap about myself. I survived the first week of uni barely, I had to tell one of my professors that i can't turn my cell off completely in his class due to my work...He was okay about it but he's been known to throw people out of his class completely if they're using cells in his class but yesterday he actually let my friend bring her dog to class...i wanted to take my dog to class but i assumed i wasn't allowed. I'm not sure i quite get his logic...He won't let anyone have their cell phone on or else you get thrown out never to return but he'll let my friend bring her dog...Like that doesn't disrupt the class far too much. I have lots of readings to do over the weekend and i fear that 'marketing research' will most definitely put me to sleep, the professor is a woman who wears like, flowing one piece dresses that make her look like she's wearing a slightly modified bathrobe, she talks with clipped tones and is extremely boring, my other lecturers aren't so bad but the guy with the cell phones definitely needs to pull the stick out of his ass. Kelly and i are going shopping for something sparkly this weekend. Also interestingly i want to go and find the love letters building. this isAmanda at 9:55 AM 0 blogger comments | | links to this post 0 Comments: Post a Comment Links to this post: See links to this post " rel="nofollow" posted by @ Create a Link Wednesday, March 02, 2005 bling rings Kelly and I have this understanding. We're not officially engaged, there's no ring and we're deciding if we should get one or not. The thing is I love him, He loves me and this is what we want. I started playing guitar in seventh grade. Cut my teeth on Metallica and the up and coming grunge stuff, (Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam) whatever Guitar World magazine was tabbing out in the early nineties. Then I got caught smoking weed a bunch of times freshman year of high school and by the time I got off grounding all my friends were hippies, or at least doing there best to look like them. So black jeans became corduroys, NIN albums became Phish bootlegs, and I tried to relearn everything I didn't pay attention to in my guitar lessons and become Trey Anastasio. Mostly just got high alot, though. After high school I went to SIU Edwardsville, Carbondale's ugly sister to the west. More drugs. Was told by SIUE's head of jazz guitar not to bother with his program or waste his time. This is a guy who bills himself as a virtuoso. Easy, buddy. At the end of my freshman year I met a lunatic named Matt Meinert at a party. I played along while he sang the likes of John Prine, Lowell George, and Bob Dylan, and we clicked. The next year we got a house together and started playing gigs around town, though I had never played lead guitar, I quickly got my trial by fire and came out alright. We played together for three years and several different projects, and pulled off some impressive gigs in and around St. Louis, but almost nothing recorded, aside from a few home videos and random 4-track ramblings. Then we got caught growing uh, indoor vegetables, and both had to move out of town. He went to Springfield, Il, I went back to Chicago. I quickly realized that being a decent young guitar player in a small town means jack shit in Chicago, where there are 17 year olds that can play circles around me, so I sort of put it down for a while, and got back into hip hop. Now I know that sounds lame and white boyish, but to any Chicagoan around my age that knows about the Jukebox, I need not say more. For those who don't, the Jukebox was a music video station in the late 80's early 90's that you could only get if you wedged your TV dial (yes it had to be a dial) between channel 23 and 24. Most of what they played was early hip hop, so without realizing it, I had a pipeline to what most little white kids didn't and still don't: GOOD hip hop. Point being, I hooked back up with Ben Schlitz, a high school buddy who was studying art in Milwaukee and rapping on the side. We collaborated on one of his art projects that incorporated music, and a partnership was born. Soon after, I helped him build his studio and since, he's released three hip hop albums, two of which I was blessed to be a part of. My musical itch came back, and I signed up at the Bloom School of Jazz in downtown Chicago at age 23. David Bloom is a lot of things, good and not so great, but he is a fantastic teacher and group leader. At the school, I found myself part of an 8 piece jazz combo performing original tunes at legendary places like The Green Mill and the Jazz Showcase. Whether I deserved it or not, it was an amazing experience. At the same time I started a neighborhood band with some friends, including drummer Mike Barry. Mike and I stuck together through a funk/disco group that went through bass players like toilet paper, and eventually morphed into a country/folk/pop type deal that found me behind a microphone for the first time ever, less than a year ago. That group has since dissolved but since nobody threw a bottle at me for ruining their hearing, I decided to keep singing, and I've decided through all the influences I've picked up since coming back to Chicago, be it jazz, hip hop, house, that I want to sing the stuff I was playing with Matt Meinert, the person who got me on stage in the first place. So for now, that's what I'm doing. Matt Gandurski's Friend Space Matt Gandurski has 100 friends. Journal Archives Destinations Journal Pimp My Safari: As ready as it will ever be “As ready as it’ll ever be”, is an apt description of a little side-project of mine just launched, Pimp My Safari.com . Its been a pet project for many months, and was started as a reaction to all the sites cataloguing Firefox extensions. Many excellent plugins for Safari have been developed, but because Safari doesn’t have an official ‘extension architecture’, many are unaware of these extensions. This is where PimpMySafari comes in – a resource for the pimping of your copy of Safari no less! Its just intended to be a simple, functional, information-based site. I’m not giving it a whole lot of time design-wise, its not the purpose. I just wanted a central place to promote these add-ons. I haven’t even bothered testing in IE, but I have given it a scant look in Mozilla. So here’s my plan. All the Safari related browser talk will now go to Pimp My Safari, leaving this blog returning to matters of design, css, music and family. Those few who are interested in such things can now read them there. When meeting people at SXSW, I often found myself apologising for running a dull browser-based blog. I shouldn’t have to, but I did feel a little embarrassed. I’m still rather wary of blogging about my family, I’d like to do it more than I do, but I just don’t feel comfortable doing it. I wish it weren’t the case, but the internet isn’t an appropriate/safe place for such things – there are nutters out there. Anyway, I digress… A quick word about the CMS When I started this, many months ago, I was using WordPress 1.5 nightlies (I wanted to make sure that I wasn’t missing out on anything). While I was very impressed with how far it had come since the last time I’d evaluated it (1.1), it was a relief to get back to Textpattern, and thats what I’ve used for the final site. I don’t think its just a case of being familiar with it. It just worked the way I wanted it to, and enabled me to easily run the entire site. So there we go, I hope someone finds it useful. I’d love it if people felt like contributing, so let me know if you feel the urge! I now have somewhere to go to for this kind of information. Great work Jon. Saft being the only thing I use with Safari, you have yet again opened my doors to a whole arena of plugins. Thanks! :) #1 Sam 296 days ago It looks really good. Maybe ill start using safari more often now. #2 Oscar 296 days ago Very nice work Jon. As for blogging about your family, just change their names when you write about them. It will be seamless. You know, your little girl, uh, Brandy, and the boy, er, Son. Yeah, that works. And your loving wife, Betty Paige. You could even throw in a couple of crazy American neighbors, one whose short with a really long, often confused name, and the other with an absurd red beard. Main, this just writes itself. I smell sitcom! #3 Jason Santa Maria 296 days ago Great stuff Jon, maybe you can convince me that Safari is the Mac equivalent of IE!! #4 John Oxton 296 days ago Thanks, Jon! Now I have somewhere to point my friends who recently switched to Mac and have no idea where to find all these extensions, and nice list for myself… ;) Good job! By the way, there is small mistake in your code, in the right sidebar the parts of text are outside the P tag and the P tag follows them, but it is empty. ;) #5 Raven 296 days ago That should read: Safari ISN’T the Mac equivalent of IE!! #6 John Oxton 296 days ago Hello. I’ve visited here a lot, but never had anything to say. First, I love your designs. Second, just wanted to tell you that on high resolutions (1600×1200) on a Windows Firefox install, the ”*e*” in “contribute” shows on the far left of the screen. I assume this is because you used text-indent: -1000px; Maybe -3000px; would fix it. Excellent site you have here :-) #7 Ian Spence 296 days ago Great work on this site Jon. I didn’t realize that there were so many great plugins available for Safari. #8 Jeff Smith 296 days ago To continue on what Ian Spence wrote, on a 1920×1200 resolution, you can see the blue text links for “Blog” and “Contribute” on the far left. #9 chris rhee 296 days ago It looks different than I expected, but it has a certain dignified simplicity to it, and the safari logo looks great, so that picks it up a notch. You’ve taken a step toward building a network of your very own, ala 9rules. #10 Scott 296 days ago Very cool Jon, I was getting antsy about the release of the site. It turned out very well indeed. I think maybe an all in one Mac browser site would have been better. Your opinion of the browser is fascinating and I wish you’d post even more about them :) I know how you feel about posting about your family on the internet, instead of using their names just say son, daughter and wifey. I felt a bit worried when I posted a few pics of my family on Flickr but I learnt not to worry so much. #11 Chris McElligott 296 days ago Found another bug (Win/FF1.0.1): Your list (or whatever you want to call it) for the top entry, Saft 7.6.0, isn’t displaying right on the main page. Instead of the list, I’m getting h4. New in 7.6.0: * Improvement: Search set to group shortcuts and search multiple search engines at same time * Improvement: Make Growl sticky flag customizable * Bug fix: Crash in rare conditions related to many undoes and switching on/off undo support * Bug fix: Problem with Reset Safari button in kiosk mode Perhaps it’s just a filter the software applies to things on the main page? #12 Jordan 296 days ago Jordan, It looks like that on all browsers I’ve seen it with. Looks like Textile markup isn’t being parsed on the main page. #13 Tony 296 days ago When should we expect pimpmyblog.com to become active? :) #14 Rob Scriva 295 days ago You should make the silver casing to the Safari logo all gold. You know, like its all pimped out. And maybe add a few diamonds to the face of the compass. Right now the site is feeling decidedly non-pimpish. #15 Kevin 295 days ago Yeah, make it something like this: http://people.zeelandnet.nl/marco/pimpzilla/ (screenshot at http://people.zeelandnet.nl/marco/pimpzilla/images/pimpzilla.jpg) #16 Jordan 295 days ago I had thought about that style, but time is against me. Besides its about macs – so minimal is the order of the day, right? #17 Jon Hicks 295 days ago I thought pimping was the order of the day. #18 Kevin 295 days ago Nah, Information, and having a life is the order of the day. I prefer it this way. #19 Jon Hicks 295 days ago Nice work Jon. Now it’s going to be just a little tougher to decide which browser to click on each time I go to my dock. Safari? Omniweb? Camino? Firefox? IE 5.2? Kidding. By the way, I love what you’ve done with your comments design. #20 Garrett 295 days ago Jon, Aren’t you worried that Apple might come down on you for using the Safari icon? #21 Scott Johnson 295 days ago I’ve switched back to Safari as my default browser in order to give the site a try. #22 Ryan 295 days ago Nice. As far as I can see, it works great here in FF 1.0.1/Win. Except for one thing. The textarea on the contact page seem to be wider than the page an go all out far to the right, which makes a horizontal scrollbar peek out and say hi. #23 Andreas Graulund 295 days ago In the distance you can hear wailing and gnashing of teeth Jon… why have you forsaken me!? I thought we had… something, you, me and WordPress? I just don’t know if I can take this… I’m going to curl up in my sock drawer and sleep for a week. Nice job on the pimpin site by the way. ;) #24 Chris J. Davis 294 days ago Sorry Chris – I just couldn’t do it all in Wordpress how I wanted to. It came very close though! #25 Jon Hicks 294 days ago Love the site and design, love it. Thanks for the pointers on OS X goodies. #26 Jan 293 days ago I love it! As usual with all your work Jon, it’s great.. And handy too. No more googling for Safari stuff. I might even start to use it again instead of Firefox #27 Rutger 292 days ago That’s a great resource Jon, well done! As far as Textpattern, I tried it but found it too frustrating to get certain things done. But it still has one of the best admin interfaces out there I’ll give them that. #28 Heiser Erwin 292 days ago Great site; informative, and it’s very easy to use. You the best Hicks! [offtopic]hehe, thanks for inspiring me to implement Gravatar for my re-designed site. I’m loving it![/offtopic] #29 Tom 292 days ago Well done!
