Only The Mars Volta, it seems, can compare in terms of the abandon with which these men create. This band has such a unique soul and style that one can't honestly put walls up around them. ( view more ) [ View All Blog Entries ] About jamiebrownjazz Jamie's story begins in 1970 in a small town in northern Japan named Misawa. It was here that he was born of Maureen Miller and Airman Tom Brown both from Union Grove, Wisconsin. Shortly after entering the world Jamie began to travel it. By age one he and the family had moved to San Vito, Italy and then to Racine, Wisconsin. By 1974 the family had picked up and moved on again. This time would be a six year trek to Great Britain. While in school in the small village of Burton Leonard, North Yorkshire Jamie followed suit with most of the children in the British school system by learning to play his first instrument, the recorder. Later, when he was about eight Jamie was introduced to the drums. Again in school. This time he was offered free drum or guitar lessons, and although it never materialized the bug had been caught. In 1980 he moved back to Wisconsin with his mother and spent time in the California bay area with his father. It was in the small rural town of Shawano, Wisconsin that Jamie was finally able to purchase his first guitar from a dime store on Green Bay Street at age 12. The first song learned... Iron Man (Black Sabbath). In 1983 Jamie's father moved to Annapolis, Maryland and in 1985 Jamie followed. Here he met up with musical friends and began the long years of high school garage bands. It was also during this period that he met drummer Mike Snyder who recorded on brown'stone with Jamie. Great years of big hair and rock-n-roll. In 1989 Jamie made the unexpected move of joining the Army. During his four years in uniform he played with several rock bands in Georgia, Oklahoma and Germany, culminating in the fall of 1992 after a year in the Middle East with a selection to the All-Army Soldiers Show Band. His first national tour followed. In 1993 Jamie returned to Annapolis and got busy with life. Unfortunately life would eventually take over and for six years Jamie did not play. After bouncing around Maryland for a few years Jamie headed out west. He arrived in the Phoenix area on May 12, 1996 and has been there since. Jamie picked up the guitar again in 2000 and began the tough road of learning to be a musician again. This time however he did not find himself in a rock-n-roll kind of a mood. In late 2000 he wrote his first song in almost a decade. It was also the first song that was not rock. That song was named Riviera and is the eighth track on Jamie's debut release, brown'stone. From there Jamie found his new groove in the Smooth Jazz world. In 2003 the most significant event to happen in Jamie's musical world happened. He met his new neighbor. A man who had toured with the likes of Marc Anthony and Gladys Knight and had worked with almost every big name in Smooth Jazz. Mel Brown became one of his best friends as well as a musical mentor. One short year later Jamie did what he never dreamed possible. He released his debut album consisting of all original material. Jamie Brown's Friend Space Jamie Brown has 181 friends. You are here: BBC > Science & Nature > Space > My Space > Sky Maps & Notes Northern Hemisphere Southern Hemisphere SKY MAPS & NOTES - January 2006 Anton Vamplew The long dark nights at this time of the year mean you have plenty of time to go out and simply stargaze. Not only that, but the winter skies truly sparkle as there are more bright stars around than at any other time of year. One constellation particularly stands out: Orion , the hunter, with his famous 'belt' of three stars. There's also the wonderful Sword of Orion nebula (a great cloud of dust and gas), which can be seen away from streetlights. The Earth is at its closest to the Sun on the 4th. It seems a bit odd then that we (in the northern hemisphere) are having winter at this time. However, the seasons are due to the tilt of the Earth's axis and they have nothing to do with our distance from the Sun. What causes the seasons? January highlights Phases of the Moon New Moon: 29th First quarter: 6th Full Moon: 14th Last quarter: 22nd Don't Miss The Quadrantids meteor shower on the 24th Click here for larger maps to print out Mercury Invisibly, Mercury sweeps beneath the daytime Sun on the 26th. At this time the planet will be lined up with the Earth but on the other side of the Solar System. Astronomers call this time superior conjunction. Even though not visible this month, Mercury is building up for a fine evening display in February. Venus The start of the month sees the brilliant Venus closing in on the evening Sun day by day. It becomes lost in the dusk solar glare - only to reappear a few days later from the bright dawn. Here in the morning skies Venus will stay until well in to September. What is interesting with this swap from evening to morning, is that Venus moves quite far above the Sun (on its inferior conjunction of the 14th). Technically at this time Venus is too close to the Sun for observation - but maybe under the right conditions this could be an exceptional inferior conjunction with Venus continuously on display. Just remember that under no circumstances should you ever look at the Sun - you might damage your eyes. Due to the differences in two orbits, Venus and the Moon don't appear together at all in January. Months like this are actually quite rare. Mars Mars is high in the south-east as the Sun sets, appearing as a red star in a rather empty area of the sky. Wait until around 8pm when it reaches its highest position directly to the south. To help find Mars, you can use the waxing gibbous Moon which sits just to the right of the planet on the 8th. (See below) Jupiter Rising by 4am from the south-east, you can see Jupiter for a good three hours before the Sun rises. The planet is in Libra , the Scales, with the closest star to it being Libra's leading star: Zubenelgenubi. The waning crescent Moon is to Jupiter's lower-right on the 23rd. Saturn This ringed world will be brighter than any other time this year. Its maximum is on the 27th - although you won't notice much difference a few weeks either side. In the evening, Saturn sits slightly north of the eastern horizon, but slowly works up to its highest southern position by about 1am. From the 28th this ringed world is 'in' the wonderful Beehive star cluster of Cancer , the Crab - a must for those with a telescope, but still an interesting sight with binoculars. The slightly old full Moon is off to Saturn's left on the 16th. Saturn on 31 January at 8pm Uranus Opposition (another one of those common planetary alignments) happens on the 1st September, and with perfect conditions (no light pollution and away from 'haze') you can catch a glimpse of this planet with your unaided eye, shining faintly at magnitude 5.7 in Aquarius, the Water Bearer. -- Meteor Showers The start of every year sees the arrival of the Quadrantids meteor shower. You can always be guaranteed a fine display that may reach up to 100 meteors per hour on the late evening of Tuesday 3rd January. The waxing crescent Moon will have set by the time the shower gets going leaving a nice dark sky. The whole shower is active from the 1st to 6th of January, giving you plenty of chances to see some of these bright fast meteors. Eclipses In an annular eclipse, the Moon moves in front of the Sun, but at a distance that allows us to see a ring of sunlight around its perimeter. The Moon will start to move in front of the Sun at around 8.50am on 3 October, reaching a maximum coverage at 10am. However, the eclipse is only annular across a small track that runs through Portugal, Spain (including most of Ibiza) and Africa. Here in the UK, the eclipse is only partial. The further to the south-west you are, the larger the partial eclipse is: from 48% coverage in the Shetlands to 73% in Cornwall. -- Mars and the Moon 14th January at 7pm -- A-Z Index About the BBC | Help | Terms of Use | Privacy & Cookies Policy
