Let's hope that 2006 will be a better one for the world, as weezer takes a step back from the limelight for a little while. ...the '05 holiday digital treat is in the pipeline, ready to go but waiting for a few tech/website things to be sorted out before its up and ready for your consumption. It should be a matter of days rather than weeks, so stay tuned. ...L.A. area peeps: here's your chance to do something fun for charity and watch weezer bassist Scott Shriner call out bingo numbers! Its the latest installment of Rock N' Roll bingo , a charity bingo series where rock stars, celebrities, and other cool cats volunteer their time and bingo refereeing skillz for charity. Scott will be MCing and calling out the numbers on the night of Jan 19th in Hollywood. Check the details here . Please note - this is not a musical performance - Scott will not be playing bass or any other instrument, aside from his, er, bingo voice. Come down for fun and to support the charity, and perhaps Scott's number calling will hook you up with a bingo victory! Large size picture link: here . ...Meanwhile, Brian Bell writes in with his account of recording the Velvet Underground song "Heroin" (with Pat) for the in production film "Factory Girl" about VU, Warhol, and Edie Sedgwick. Take it away, Brian... "...Covering the Velvet Underground song "Heroin" for the movie "Factory Girl" has made me rethink how I approach music, it at least gives validation to an already known fact: music does not need to be sober. By "sober" I mean perfect, tight, or in the case of most modern rock music, uptight. Working on this project with Pat was a blast. There was no premeditated plan, no rehearsal, there was barely even a discussion of how to approach this seven minute ride. I was a bit nervous going into it because the song still needed to be approved by the film's makers, who were coming to the studio to meet us and probably also to see that their investment was not in vain. As far as I know they are satisfied and haven't changed their minds. No matter anyway because the lessons learned and the experience of recording with Pat proved to be invaluable. We started at ten in the morning and ended up using the fourth of fifth take. I really wanted to have a good version of the song to play the producers of the film before they arrived at two. We kept my tracking guitar and I re-sung the song trying to mimic Lou Reeds' phrasing word for word. Just as I finished they arrived and I was sweating bullets nervously waiting for approval. They seemed genuinely pleased and the only concerns at that time were that the song broke into a beat, which was different than the drumming of the Velvets' drummer Mo Tucker. Tucker did have an amazing feel, but she was no Pat, and Pat pulled out an "Only In Dreams" type crescendo that I think makes that aspect of the song better. Later, I got a call from the director telling me to re-sing the song using my own phrasing, "just go for it", he said. I did just that and threw in a little Dylan for good measure. My reservation going into this was that no matter how good it turned out, criticism would soon follow. You can't attempt a rock classic (especially a cult band like the Velvets) and not get a few sneers. But the important thing here is that maybe we might help turn a new generation onto this amazing art rock band and change the perspectives of a few unknowing listeners. If your music has steered too far from the aesthetic of the Velvet Underground you have to ask yourself, "What the hell am I trying to do?"..." -Brian ...The CFNY "Ongoing History Of New Music" episode from November featuring the story of Rivers is online for your streaming pleasure here . Check it oot! ...Vote for "Perfect Situation" on the TRL webpage ! Your vote counts and is mucho appreciated! Meanwhile, the single has risen to #4 on the modern rock chart , and is doing its best to catch up to its 900-pound gorilla big brother known as "Beverly Hills", which keeps popping back up near the top of the pop charts time and time again! The "Perfect Situation" video should be available on iTunes very soon. It's also coming to our streaming media page sometime soon, but we haven't heard exactly when yet. It's still available to stream on the Yahoo! Music pages. (best in IE, Firefox doesnt seem to like it). ...coming up in a little over a month: The Grammys . "Beverly Hills" has been nominated in the Best Rock Song catergory for the 2006 Grammy Awards, up against U2, Foo Fighters, Coldplay, and Bruce Springsteen. The Grammy Awards take place on Feb 8th at the Staples Center in L.A. ...looks like the karma account wasn't too badly overdrawn: Japan luggage accounted for! Thanks to all who wished me luck, and to Continental's staff for doing the right thing. Comments (27) 12/25/05 Holiday '05 greetings 12/25/2005 11:50:25 PM - by Karl Koch ...Everyone in weezer and all their support crew and staff wish you happy holidays, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa, and the very best holiday season. May it be filled with goodwill, peace, and good rock for all. Everyone wish good thoughts for all people and things this season...including those still trying to get on their feet after the major disasters of '05... Also including my still missing luggage, which sadly contains all the gifts I found in Japan for my friends and fam! D'oh! Keeping the fingers crossed that the luggage karma gremlins go my way... But no matter how it plays out...it's a lesson that always bears repeating - stuff is just stuff, even really expensive or uber cool stuff. Yes, even irreplacable stuff - whether it be lost by overstressed airlines during the holidays, or by natural disaster. But good health and good times with friends and family is REALLY where its at, and is better than any gift - or any supercool item scored in Shibuya that you may never see again. It's important to keep that in mind as we gather for holiday times. Best wishes to everyone! Mixed emotions all around. An awesome sense of triumph and success mixed with the sad goodbyes and the mystery of what the future holds. As Rivers returns to school in the spring and everyone takes care of personal business (some pretty majorly cool stuff!) for a while, yet continues to work towards a musical future nonetheless, only time will tell when the weezer machine will get back into full gear. Its not going to be entirely quiet around the weezer hood, not by a long shot. Everyone is planning on writing music, and indeed a good deal of songs have been already created while the band was still on tour this fall. Pat's even building a new home studio to better work on music. Also Brian and Pat are going to be recording a cover version of The Velvet Underground's "Heroin" and will actually be appearing in the in-production film "Factory Girl" about the 60's Andy Warhol scene, performing the song. And around these weezer.com parts, updates, overhauls, fresh stuff and a few suprises are on the horizon. (Its no secret that the site has some neglected corners that need a serious dusting off - this type of work and more is in the works). Im also happy to say that it looks like Santa will indeed be bringing you a present or 2 this year - but its not clear when exactly this will arrive in your, uh, digital chimneys - asap, of course, but its doubtful youll see anything on the morn of 12/25. Hopefully it wont be more than a few days late. Just so's ya know! Also, this live DVD is in the works. weve got the footage, now its a matter of putting it together. I dont have any info as to a projected release time yet, but it will happen in '06 for sure. CONGRATULATIONS to the band for a fantastic and successful 2005! And HUGE thank you's to all the crew, staff, local personel, and YOU, the fans, who helped make everything happen, from the tour dates to the travel to the interviews to the TV stuff, and everything inbetween. In my opinion, some of the best moments of the show happen in those first ten or so minutes, and it's much more freeform and less rigid than the rest of the show's schedule. So I'd like to hear from someone in the know: Did they just not have time for it today (unlikely, but I'd love to believe it's true) or is it really gone for good? If so, that's just one more on an ever-growing list of reasons why all of AOTSs changes might be for the worse. ------------------------- AOTS YTMNDs: Sarah's "Meeeh...." , Emo Kevin TeenFlirt17 (Firefox only) Reply Quote Top Bottom Nephets A man of science, a man of faith Posts: 3442 Joined: Nov 2002 Monday January 09, 2006 5:13 PM If it's gone for good, the show just seems to be an interview show... interviews are the worst part in my opinion ------------------------- Texas Longhorns, your national champions! I think it's generally accepted that Attack of the Interview (or whatever it was called) was by far the worst and most boring of the clip shows. I mean, every once in a while a guest is interesting or did something worth noticing on the internet, but it seems like about 75% of the time, it's someone bouncing from show to show to promote their newest crap, be it a book or a new show on G4. I think I gagged when they made Sarah read that "Coming up on Star Trek" thing at the end of today's episode. For anyone keeping track: no new co-host, live only on East Coast, no more real Friday shows, Feed moved, and Top of the Show removed. I wonder what'll be left in about six months; a prerecorded 60-minute interview of a Star Trek producer every Wednesday? I'm obviously exaggerating, but I digress. I wonder what'll be left in about six months; a prerecorded 60-minute interview of a Star Trek producer every Wednesday? I'm obviously exaggerating, but I digress. I'll seriously miss this segment if it's truly gone. I just watched AOTS 30 minutes ago...and I live in California. That's because your cable company isn't using the West coast feed yet. For the masses, AOTS should be at the same time on all coasts. ------------------------- Miss Fresh Gear or Filter? This sort of thing actually grabbed my attention and made me want to tell my friends about what I saw on AOTS. Ever since they changed it over to using the part of the show as a platform to show mostly mediocre skits, or talk about things that aren't really that fascinating and I don't really care about, like some new movie trailor or whatever. Most interviews are annoyingly generic, with nothing really interesting that goes on in them (the suitcase thing with the one red paper clip guy was just stupid), and most of the segments that the show's come to be known for are getting killed off or just not being used to the extent that they once were. I've really stopped watching AOTS, and if I miss one especially funny segment or skit, it'll probably pop up on the blog anyway. ------------------------- Reply Quote Top Bottom pmk Level 1 Posts: 129 Joined: Apr 2005 Tuesday January 10, 2006 1:56 AM The show didn't flow as nicely today without that welcome segment infront of the plasma screen. ------------------------- attack of the livejournal Reply Quote Top Bottom TruXter ≈Death's●Stalker≈ Posts: 3081 Joined: Dec 2004 Tuesday January 10, 2006 2:47 AM "we get it before it gets out" will probably be removed from the comercials soon I mean... we already have Aots's future and no one watches that damn show. ------------------------- 15 megs of me complaining A real Forum WIL O'NEAL FOR AOTS HOST! truxter@hackermail.com Edited: Tuesday January 10, 2006 at 3:03 AM by TruXter Reply Quote Top Bottom Kat Level 1 Strawberry Posts: 1618 Joined: Jun 2005 Tuesday January 10, 2006 4:40 AM The top of the show is important. Very important. It sets the mood for the rest of the show; it is personable while staying informative. The idea of doing the entire show from the couch (or most of it) also confuses me, though I may get used to it by week's end. One Moanman in Time All men are prepared to accomplish the incredible if their ideals are threatened. ~Maya Angelou "WHORE!" [Oct 8 2004, 6:52 PM] [ Poetry ] Whore She used sex to tell the world how fuckin hungry she was. A ravenous girl, turned woman, turned junkie turned mother, turned out She used her tits to nurture the masses feeding men who never once fed her back Sustenance to her was like some foreign food, never tasted lacking its proper nutrients lacking its lactating mama lacking its daddy's love 'cause love left, packing its vagabond shoes... Too many mouths left unfed too many cries and bellies left empty so... She fucked out of hunger for affection so she fucked from an absence of tenderness So she fucked from a need to feed every crack, every crevice every cranny, every gash left open in her soul.
