MySpace.com-Safety Tips SafetyTips My name is Parry Aftab. I am an Internet privacy and security lawyer . I founded and run the world’s largest online safety and help group, WiredSafety.org . You may have seen me on TV ,read one of my books or heard about me in magazines or newspapers on Internet safety issues, especially those impacting kids. I get lots of e-mails and inquiries from parents about all types of Internet risks. Recently, I have been receiving a large number of inquiries from schools, parents, regulators and the media about social-networking websites. I decided that it was important to address parent concerns and answer their questions. Where better to do that than on the most popular of all social-networking sites, MySpace.com? MySpace.com and other similar sites are designed to allow people to share their creativity, pictures, and information with others. Sometimes people do this to find romance. Sometimes they do it to find friends with similar interest. While this may be okay for adults, it is not okay for kids. MySpace.com recognizes this, and prohibits anyone under 14 years of age from using their website. Unfortunately, while they may set rules to keep younger kids off the site, they can’t prevent kids from lying about their age, pretending to be 14 years of age or older. To address this, MySpace.com has developed special software to review the profiles of their members, to try and find anyone under age, based on information the members post about themselves. It’s not perfect, but it does help spot the underage members. While MySpace.com is doing its best to keep your children from using their website and lying about their age, it’s up to parents to do their job too. Parents need to talk with their children about not sharing personal information online. Personal information includes pictures, names and addresses, schools they attend, cell and phone numbers and many other less obvious things, such as the name of their school team, ethnic background and even a mall near your house. (You can learn more about how to talk to your kids and what you should be asking at WiredKids.org or WiredSafety.org . I am an Internet privacy and security lawyer and founded the all-volunteer Wired Safety Group. We can help you if things go wrong online, or you just have questions. We provide information, education and one-to-one help for victims of cyberabuse.) We at WiredSafety.org are developing a special program just for parents concerned about their kids using social-networking and online dating sites. It will teach you what you need to know about finding out if your child has a profile on one of these sites, how to review them and remove them, if you want to. It will also help you if your child is being cyberbullied using one of these sites or members from these sites, or is cyberbullying others. The best way to find out if your child has a profile on this or another similar site is to ask them. If you’re not sure that your child is being honest with you, you can search MySpace.com using their e-mail address, or by searching for their school. (You click on “search” and enter their email address or full name in the appropriate search box.) If you find that your child has a profile on the website, you should review it. It’s amazing how much you can learn about your child by reading their profiles. Does it contain personal information, such as their full name, address or phone numbers? Has your child posted photos? Are they photos of themselves or someone else? Are they sharing poems they write or provocative comments about themselves or others? If you want the profile removed (you must remove your child’s profile if they are under age), contact MySpace.com’s parental help staff or contact me at WiredSafety.org . If you want something removed from their profile, you can contact the parental help staff as well. Ultimately, protecting your child is your job. But you have lots of help. At WiredKids.org and WiredSafety.org thousands of volunteers donate their time to helping parents and children surf responsibly and safely. And we will be building a few tutorials here at MySpace.com to help parents and their children understand how to be careful when communicating publicly online. Ask them why they created the profile. You might learn that they wanted to share their thoughts with others, make new friends or even allow others in their school to get to know them better. But not all of their motives are as noble or safe. Some may be interested in meeting new romantic interests or role-playing inappropriately online. And when a young preteen lies about their age posing as a seventeen year old at the site, that can be a serious problem. Others in their late teens might approach your child thinking they were older. That’s bad for everyone. If you discover that your child is posting provocative comments or inappropriate images online, it’s time for the tough talk. The one about stranger dangers and how that cute eighteen year old boy they meet online may not be cute, may not be eighteen and may not be a boy. (Parents of young boys need to understand that their children are equally at risk. About one-third of the cases of Internet sexual exploitation are men exploiting boys.) Our children need to realize that there are real risks relating to meeting strangers offline, including murder. The first confirmed murder victim by an Internet sexual predator was thirteen when she died, three years ago May 2005. The risks are real, not matter how smart, sophisticated or tech savvy your kids are. We recommend the book, A Girl’s Life Online, by Katie Tarbox. We are also developing a few videos for teens teaching them about standard ploys used by Internet sexual predators to lure a young boy or girl into an offline meeting or sexual exploitation situations online. It’s not easy raising children anymore. It is even harder when the parent is expected to be expert in Internet, cell phone and interactive game risks. The good thing is that you’re not facing these challenges alone. We’re here to help. Just remember that while your kids may know more than you do about technology, you know more about life. And you are allowed to set the rules and enforce them. You’re still the parent! There is software you can install that will record what your kids say and post online. There is even one that will e-mail you reports at work. The ones I like best are made by Spectorsoft, and can be found at software4parents.com or spectorsoft.com . But don’t use them just to spy on your kids. Treat them like a security video camera in the corner of a bank. No one views the tapes unless and until there is a break-in. Do the same here. Check the program reports if something goes wrong. It will collect whatever you need for evidence and to help your child if something goes wrong. Also, check your parental control programs. Many, such as AOL’s and MSN’s, can block access to social-networking websites or other sites you think are inappropriate for your younger child. There are many other products you can purchase to block sites as well. (Check out software4parents.com to learn about and purchase some of these.) Just remember that the best filter is the one between your children’s ears. If you child is being bullied by another MySpace.com use online, check the terms of service first. If the bullying violates MySpace.com’s terms of service, report it to TOS and the offending comments and/or profile will be removed. If something serious occurs and you need to reach out to law enforcement, let them know that MySpace.com has created a special procedure for law enforcement inquiries, especially when the safety and well-being of its site users is involved. They should contact abuse@myspace.com. Cyberbullying is a growing problem. You can learn more about it, as well as how to prevent and handle cyberbullying incidents, at WiredSafety’s StopCyberbullying.org and InternetSuperheroes.org . WiredSafety.org also has a reportline link for victims of cyberbullying, their schools and parents where specially-trained volunteers assist victims of cyberstalking, harassment and cyberbullying without charge. If schools are looking for a presentation or program to address their students’ posting inappropriate profiles or using these websites while underage or other parent concerns, they should visit WiredSafety.org , WiredKids.org or Teenangels.org . So for this issue, in the interest of rallying the forces of good, we decided to trot out the worst possible opponent we could think of to beat mercilessly and halt our pathetic losing streak. Herewith begins a monumental 4-move journey of her knight all the way to the other side of the board, as Anya completely ignores basic chess principles of developing different pieces and establishing central pawns. 6...Bd6 7.Ne3 Qd7 8.Ng2 0-0-0 9.Nh4 Rhe8 eXile prepares to march its e-pawn toward Anya's king with the support of the king's rook. A cross-board trek for Anya's queen's knight 10.b4?? e4 11.Ng2 Anya's knight again feels a bit uncomfortable and decides to seek safety on g2. The eXile has plenty of dangerous continuations to choose from, including: 11... Ne5 12. Qb3 Be6 13. Nf4 Nd3+ 14. exd3 Bxf4 15. Qa3 exd3 16. Qxa7. Instead eXile opts for the simple and effective... 11...d4 12.cxd4 12...Nxd4 13.b5? An interesting decision, in the same way that the Danny Pearl decapitation video is interesting. Obviously white's b-pawn should be protected with 13. a3 13...Qxb5 14.h3 Bh5 15.h4?? It's time for the eXile to lower the Patrick Bateman chainsaw on Anya. There are many possibilities, including 15...Be5 with the attack on Ra1, but the eXile goes for the throat quickly. 15...Qc6 Necessary here is 16. Ne3 (16... Nd5 17. Bh3+ Kb8 18. Kf1 Nxe3+ 19. fxe3 Nc2 20. Rb1 Bg3 21. Rb3 Bxh4 22. Kg2) to protect against 16...Nc2+ and White loses its queen. Anya instead opts for the shocking... 16.Bb2?? Nc2+ 17.Qxc2 The white king's only escape from checkmate. 17...Qxc2 Anya should resign here (indeed, she should have much earlier), but then again, a 22-year-old whore from the Ukraine has probably seen worse in her life. That's what we call CHECKMATE, bee-yaaaaaaaaaaatch!!!!! 18.e3 Qxb2 Anya gives up her bishop. Her rook is next. 19.Rd1 Bxd1 There goes the rook. 20.Kxd1 Bb4 Mate in two moves if Anya moves 21. Directed and produced by Kareem Edouard, narrated by the legandary Chuck D the short documentary gives you as real an understanding of where the diamonds that adorn arms, fingers, necks, teeth and wrists really come from and it certainly doesnt resemble 47th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues. The main topic of the documentary is conflict diamonds, those diamonds that 'originate in areas that are controlled by factions opposed to legitimate and recognized governments.' The documentary shows in graphic detail the 'real' diamond district and it's people being killed, having limbs amputated by the rebel force of the RUF, Revolutionary United Front, which has maintained control of the country and has dominated the diamond fields since 1991. They have killed an estimated 50,000 - 75,000 people during their attack on civilization and securing control of the most diamond rich country (Sierra Leone) in the word. The United Nations etsimated that international diamond trading centers purchased $125 million dollars worth of diamonds from the RUF each year, which allows them to purchase weapons to maintain control over the dwindling population. 'Bling: Consequences and Repercussions' makes you sit and up and think. Hip-hop is dominated by diamonds, consumed by them, everyone trying to bling more than the next person. As the documentary comes to an end the closing comment from a young white kid is "Most rappers are black and they should be supporting those Africans that are being hurt because of diamonds." It's urban, it's pimped out, and this bad boy screams 'look at me!'. Lowriders The phenomenon of lowriders is huge in the States, and although lowriders have been here for a few years, the UK has been slow to pick up the trend. In Birmingham city centre however, you might just see a group of Birmingham lowrider owners cruising the streets with their unique bikes. Ian Cumberbatch and Etienne Amion are into the urban hip-hop scene and are the first to bring lowriders to Birmingham. Lowrider phenomenon Etienne, Ian and Farrah Lowrider bikes began back in 60s America. Cars were customised with hydraulics to allow them to ride low and 'bounce'. Mexican and Puerto Ricans wanted to get involved in the lowrider movement, but most couldn't afford the expense of customising a car. They began to customise bikes by bending the forks to allow the frames to be lower, and then added colour, mirrors, bells...the lowrider bike movement was born. Michael with his 7ft chopper Michael Parinchy, 18, rides with Etienne and Ian on a Chopper lowrider; "Getting lots of attention is the main reason you go for something like this is the attention you get. My BMX gets me from place to place but sometimes it's good to get the crowds going on my lowrider." So what's the appeal of a 70's style bike to a teenager or twenty-something growing up in a technological age? Bling up your bike "It's urban, hip hop style and pretty unique here" says Michael. "I haven’t seen any being rolled around in Birmingham apart from the ones we go around on. Maybe next summer we’ll have everyone rollin' around on them. "The wheels remind me so much of the American lowrider cars and it's very hip-hop - that’s what I love about them. Especially the idea of rolling in big groups." Farrah The lowrider is definitely not just a means of getting from A to B. They're a bike made for cruising - they need to be looked at. Hip-hop stars like Snoop Dogg and Pharrell Williams are encouraging the appeal of the lowrider scene, often featuring them in their videos. Ladies love lowriders It's not just a hip-hop 'rude-boy' that's hooked on these bikes. The ladies are loving lowriders too. Not only the bikes beautiful to look at, but they also have mirrors perfect for touch-ups, or applying lipgloss, as Farrah demonstrates... And it's not just mirrors that adorn the lowrider, they can be personalised in just about any way imaginable. Farrah takes advantage of the mirrors "You can twist frames, paint them, have different wheels, spokes, mirrors, forks, peddles, spinning wheels. Each and every bike is different and everyone adds their own touch to their bike. There are 7 or 8 frame types in any colour you can imagine and you can customise it to your own style. "You can get hydraulics for them which lets the bike bounce and lowers them a whole lot. You can put soundsystems and boomboxes on them, hook up your iPod or mobile phone - even add neon lights." says Ian, who has owned his lowriders for over a year. Farrah, Ian And Etienne Ian Cumberbatch, 21, and Etienne Amion, 18 are such lowrider enthusiasts they have created their own company, BabyBoy Lowrider, to bring the bikes to Birmingham and the rest of the UK. Urban culture "Basically lowriders represents the urban culture that people wanna be a part of" says Etienne. "Nowadays as life is so fast moving, relaxing on a bike is not part of most people's day. Once people have a go they're hooked, and the attention that you get from being so unique is amazing. It’s unique to Birmingham and there are only a few stockists in the UK and we’re the only ones in Birmingham. Ian Cumberbatch Ian is keen to make the lowrider Birmingham's must-have accessory, "Everyone is fashion conscious here, its like kids who can’t afford a car, or are too young to get a licence are gonna look cool on a lowrider. "A lot of people buy them to display in their house but we wanna hit them out to people with a cool urban background coz that's where they start from. To these guys lowriders aren't just transport, they're a way of life, a style statement, a culture, or in their words "pimped-out". Etienne Amion "We wanna introduce people to the lowriders and represent the culture with the bikes" says Etienne. "We wanna organise meetings of lowrider owners to relax and celebrate the culture in Birmingham." "The urban scene in Birmingham is getting ready for lowriders and people want to be part of it," concludes Ian, "It’ll take off."
