Let’s see - HAPPY NEW YEAR , now that we’re nearly 1 full week into 2006. We spent most of New Year’s Eve in the EMERGENCY ROOM at St. Joseph’s in Savannah, GA with our 3-year old, Will … it’s a long story, but suffice it to say … he fell off a cow (yes, a real cow) and busted his forehead open on the side of a big hayride trailer. He’s a tough rodeo boy, for sure. The CD master for “ Worship Under The Stars ” is officially IN REPLICATION at DiscMakers … CD’s should be released the week of Jan. 24 - stay tuned! [more info at worshipunderthestars.com | preorder the CD and/or DVD ] I’m headed out in a few minutes to McRae, GA … my hometown, to play piano in my buddy’s wedding - Chuck Hutcheson … a great friend, great musician, and great man of God. Chuck is one of my “friends” on MySpace - check out his page ! I just launched a new podcast today called the “ E-Business Online Podcast & Journal ” - crazy as it sounds, I’ll continue doing the “ Highest Praise Worship Podcast ” - leading worship, sharing ministry and music, etc. Then, I’ll change hats and do this “E-Business” blog and podcast to share insights and commentary on some of the things I’ve learned in doing business online, including a few things lately that have proven QUITE LUCRATIVE, , thankfully! (thanks to God, who ultimately provides all things, right!?) Wish I could say more … I’m really disappointed that Georgia lost to West Virginia this week. Thrilled that Texas beat USC, although I wish it would’ve been by more than one touchdown, ‘cause everybody knows that one of the Texas touchdowns shouldn’t have counted, much as I hate to admit it. And Robert Pooley … before you leave “ha-ha” comments about Georgia losing on this blog, just remember FSU lost, too, bro! We’ll drown our sorrows in prayer and fasting in a few weeks together in Pensacola. More to come - press in, and get close to God. In the “ web hosting business ” that I own, new customers are not very frequent, and existing customers downgrade to our cheapest plans all the time. I can’t blame them - I’m always downgrading cell phone plans, etc., to take advantage of the new “deals”. So - when “free money” comes along - I perk up a second. Yeah - I know … “nothing is ever free”. Don’t be so sure. Joy and I use the Chase Rewards Visa (formerly First USA) for all our everyday purchases. We discipline ourselves to not ‘charge more than we can payoff’ each month, and the free rewards add up. It’s not long before Chase sends us a $100 check in the mail. Why? For using their card. It costs us nothing. Today, I was logging into our Online Banking at Bank of America and discovered the newest place for “free money” . Sounded too good to be true, but it’s the real deal. It’s called “Keep The Change” … and if you are a Bank of America customer - check it out. Use your debit card … and make a purchase. They will round your purchase up to the nearest dollar and transfer the “change” into your savings account. Ok - so far - that’s not free. They are forcing you to “save”. So .. .if I buy myself a Coke and crakers for $1.25 … my debit card is used and they round it up to $2.00. (yes - they take $2.00 out of my checking account). The $.75 is moved to Savings automatically. Here’s where there is free money, though … For the first three months, Bank of America will MATCH every “keep the change” transfer. So I’m forced to save $.75 … but I also get a free $.75 in “matching” savings. After the first three months, they will match 5%. I think there is some cap on it, like $250/year - but that’s $250/year! I think it’s a pretty clever way to make you “save”. They’ve essentially taken control of your change jar … and in my house, that’s a good thing because my change jar gets raided DAILY. For those who aren’t aware of how performance licensing works, songwriters and publishers choose to affiliate themselves with one of the major “PRO’s” (Performaning Rights Organizations). The 3 well known ones are “BMI” , “ASCAP” and “ SESAC “. Since SESAC is a special “invitation only” type organization, most writers make a choice between BMI and ASCAP. I chose BMI when I initially started publishing my writing commercially - and I’ve only seen a handful of pennies from them ever. I can’t say it would be better with ASCAP because although I’m a BMI writer, I own several songs that are published by ASCAP writers, and we never see royalties on that either. PRO royalties come from “performances” - TV, Radio, Internet, etc. Yesterday, I celebrated a whopping check of $12.00 and some change for the “Internet Performances” of the following songs: “Open Door” “Peaceful River” “Pressing In” “Rejoice In the Lord” These are titles of themes on my original “QuietTimes” Keyboard Instrumental , which isn’t even “in print” anymore except on cassette . No clue where this came from - a long time ago, I uploaded these exact songs to IUMA (Internet Underground Music Archive) so that’s the only way I can figure those songs got “reported” on and paid. Whatever the case, I thought it was cool … small, but cool. Oh yeah - and finally - because I failed to ever post the results of the ongoing “Ebay Saga” (see previous threads in the archives) … after two months, my Ebay account was reinstated. No excuses, no reasons, no explanation - just a short email saying “we’ve reviewed your appeal and we are happy to reinstate your account”. Lost income for two months, and they have yet to tell me why - go figure! Oh well - lots of work to do today - but gotta go.. just wanted to share that. "...Covering the Velvet Underground song "Heroin" for the movie "Factory Girl" has made me rethink how I approach music, it at least gives validation to an already known fact: music does not need to be sober. By "sober" I mean perfect, tight, or in the case of most modern rock music, uptight. Working on this project with Pat was a blast. There was no premeditated plan, no rehearsal, there was barely even a discussion of how to approach this seven minute ride. I was a bit nervous going into it because the song still needed to be approved by the film's makers, who were coming to the studio to meet us and probably also to see that their investment was not in vain. As far as I know they are satisfied and haven't changed their minds. No matter anyway because the lessons learned and the experience of recording with Pat proved to be invaluable. We started at ten in the morning and ended up using the fourth of fifth take. I really wanted to have a good version of the song to play the producers of the film before they arrived at two. We kept my tracking guitar and I re-sung the song trying to mimic Lou Reeds' phrasing word for word. Just as I finished they arrived and I was sweating bullets nervously waiting for approval. They seemed genuinely pleased and the only concerns at that time were that the song broke into a beat, which was different than the drumming of the Velvets' drummer Mo Tucker. Tucker did have an amazing feel, but she was no Pat, and Pat pulled out an "Only In Dreams" type crescendo that I think makes that aspect of the song better. Later, I got a call from the director telling me to re-sing the song using my own phrasing, "just go for it", he said. I did just that and threw in a little Dylan for good measure. My reservation going into this was that no matter how good it turned out, criticism would soon follow. You can't attempt a rock classic (especially a cult band like the Velvets) and not get a few sneers. But the important thing here is that maybe we might help turn a new generation onto this amazing art rock band and change the perspectives of a few unknowing listeners. If your music has steered too far from the aesthetic of the Velvet Underground you have to ask yourself, "What the hell am I trying to do?"..." -Brian ...The CFNY "Ongoing History Of New Music" episode from November featuring the story of Rivers is online for your streaming pleasure here . Mixed emotions all around. An awesome sense of triumph and success mixed with the sad goodbyes and the mystery of what the future holds. As Rivers returns to school in the spring and everyone takes care of personal business (some pretty majorly cool stuff!) for a while, yet continues to work towards a musical future nonetheless, only time will tell when the weezer machine will get back into full gear. Its not going to be entirely quiet around the weezer hood, not by a long shot. Everyone is planning on writing music, and indeed a good deal of songs have been already created while the band was still on tour this fall. Pat's even building a new home studio to better work on music. Also Brian and Pat are going to be recording a cover version of The Velvet Underground's "Heroin" and will actually be appearing in the in-production film "Factory Girl" about the 60's Andy Warhol scene, performing the song. And around these weezer.com parts, updates, overhauls, fresh stuff and a few suprises are on the horizon. (Its no secret that the site has some neglected corners that need a serious dusting off - this type of work and more is in the works). Im also happy to say that it looks like Santa will indeed be bringing you a present or 2 this year - but its not clear when exactly this will arrive in your, uh, digital chimneys - asap, of course, but its doubtful youll see anything on the morn of 12/25. Hopefully it wont be more than a few days late. Just so's ya know! Also, this live DVD is in the works. weve got the footage, now its a matter of putting it together. I dont have any info as to a projected release time yet, but it will happen in '06 for sure. CONGRATULATIONS to the band for a fantastic and successful 2005! It's fun, it's easy, and it's sexy ! All those with at least 7 unique skins (14 for myspace skins*) approved in the cB skin database are eligible! Unique meaning they aren't variations of the same skin. Variations count as one skin. No other requirements, not even minimum posts! Official designers get to strut around cB in the "Official Designer" member group, which is shown in the miniprofile of each post. It's cB's way of saying thank you - for contributing and making this community the best one out there! Official designers recieve the same privileges as official members. To become one, once you have 7 unique skins* approved, reply here and list the skins that have been approved. New members will be added on a weekly basis. *note: since myspace skins take much less time to make (only css edits), they count as 1/2 of the total skins count. micron Jan 17 2005, 10:37 PM No comments please, just applicants! If a moderator believes that it is not fitting, then a moderator CAN delete it. It is fair because just by being official designer, it proves that you are the best of the best. BUT, if a skin is rejected, it's okay! Remember that in the long run it will help you. If the skin is rejected, one can always make it better. And the "wait" really just depends on how fast the moderators can get through the queue. It takes longer if the server is down. As well, there are literally tons of layouts that aren't actual layouts and it would be much faster if people didn't submit layouts with a link rather than codes or if some actually followed the guidelines. There's nothing against website layouts that makes you think they get accepted last or something. The layouts that are submitted first are accepted/rejected first. It's only left there if someone is unsure about it and leaves it to another moderator to choose. It's just that in the recent times, we've been having problems with the server or the uploader. Yeah, it's just Design and Head Staff and admins. Although... any mod (except People) can accept them. Anyway, I'll try to get into the queue more often. I'm getting better about remembering to go through the layouts. Really. I just don't want anyone to become discouraged because there isn't a reason to become discouraged.
