I had come from Bulgaria and didn't want to buy Rumenian currency for just one day. That's why, I went straight to the airport where I arrived around 6pm, facing 12 hours to kill! Although it's a non-smoking airport, no one seems to care and people where just having their cigarettes all over the place. On the ground floor, there is an information desk, a newsagent, a change office, a fast food restaurant and a bar, the latter staying open all night! Upstairs, there is a prayer room, another bar a self service restaurant (they serve pizzas) and a hairdressers. They all accept Euros and American Dollars on condition that they have enough change. Both floors have toilets which are pretty clean. There are armchairs with little tables attached to them. Heating is swithched on at 8pm so you won't get cold. Cleaning happens at night so don't be surprised if suddenly a noisy vacuumcleaner awakens you. Not one moment did I feel unsafe though.I was a bit dissapointed that they wouldn't let me (or anybody else) into the boarding area so there were quite a few people sleeping around, mainly on the ground floor. You are aloud into the boarding area two and a half hours before your flight. Shops in the boarding area start opening between 5 and 6am. There are a few nice looking gift shops, a newsagent/bookstore and a bar. To anyone thinking to spend the night at this airport, I would suggest to go to the first floor and try to make yourself comfortoble on the armchairs. Enjoy your travels." Added16 OCT 2004 BUCHAREST, Romania (Contributed by J.P. van Bolhuis ) "I was there waiting for my connecting flight to Amsterdam. Had arrived at 2.00 AM and would leave at 7.00 AM. Upon arrival there were no open pubs/restaurants. The seats had armrests and the floor was marble. The marble was clean, so i had no problems sleeping on it. As for security, no problems, it did feel safe, but then I was in the boarding area. " BUCHAREST, Romania (Contributed by Andre Bossen ) "It was in October and November 2000 that I had to spend a night on Bucharest Ottopeni Airport. Coming from Amsterdam, going to Cairo and vice versa. The airport itself is nothing special though it is clean. This is very fortunate because the seats on the airport have armrests, making it necessary to sleep on the floor. There is one other option. The seats have small tables attached to them so if they are re-arranged, the tables make (sort of) small plateaus on which you can sleep. The floor still is your best option though. The heating works and is turned quite high, so do not fear of being cold. In all, I had a good couple of hours of sleep. Apart from some small shops, that are rather expensive, there is nothing there so bring you own food, drink and entertainment. I would give Bucharest international airport a 6+ due to the little entertainment it offers. " RAILWAY STATION BUCHAREST (Train Station), Romania (Contributed by DAMO) "May 2003 - What a place! Arrived here from Galati, Romania to catch atrain the next morning to Belgrade, Serbia. I dont know where to start! A fewyears ago this station was the epicentre for every roaming scumbag immaginable. The situation seems to have improved as these black clad security type guys nowloiter around the entrances extracting bribes. Apparently you do have to pay toenter the station if you are not travelling, but even if you have a ticket foronward travel the next morning these guys still want cash. Fair enough it wasonly about 1 which is whore of a cheaper than any hotel in Bucharest. There isa cafe open all night which is dirt cheap but dirt dirty. The seats in the"First Class" waiting room look like police cell benches, wooden andvery uncomfortable, be prepared to share with whole families of Gypsies and gluesniffers. On a final note avoid the toilets at all costs!!! I dont knowabout the ladies but the gents is the worse I have ever encountered. At thebottom of a stairwell you will find its flooded to ankle height with browncolured water. Floating articles included turds, condoms, and discarded porno mags. The worse thing though is that they have the cheek to charge to use thishellhole. During the day if you need to go visit Mcdonalds nearby!" Added 06 FEB 04 BUCHAREST (Train Station), Romania (Contributed by Anon) "July 1995 - My train to Bulgaria was delayed coming from Russia until 4 am, and we had to spend the time in Bucharest station. I don't know if things have changed in the last few years, but there was nowhere under $50 per night to stay in the town. Bucharest station seems to get all the local scum turning up even at 2 in the morning. It is definitely to be avoided, and watch your stuff like a hawk." BUCHAREST (Railway Station), Romania (Contributed by Anon) "Has improved a lot in the last 5 years. Entrance to the railway station is limited strictly to those who can show they have a ticket for a train, so you don't get all the scum hanging around. Also has a few decent shops selling real food, should you get hungry in the night." BUCHAREST (Train Station), Romania (Contributed by Erik Bielefeldt) "Train station in Bulgaria, near the Turkish border. I spent the night at some station in the middle of nowhere waiting for a connecting train (September 97). The whole experience was very surreal--here I was in some small station in the middle of the night, but the place was full of people. It seemed the whole town had a train to catch at 3am or something. Well, I didn't sleep well because I was quite nervous of losing my possessions. On the other hand, I don't think the town had a hotel, and I was probably safer in the station than wandering around trying to find one. Well, we're off! However, today I won't be telling you how to pimp one of the big, major search engines. Instead, I want to help pimp you as a searcher by getting you to a great specialty/vertical search engine. That's none other than the very popular Internet Movie Database from Amazon.com. IMDB has become a standard and respected reference database for film and TV information. For film, TV, and pop-culture freaks, it's also a great deal of fun. The IMDB is more than just a "enter a movie title or actor's name and get results" type of place. Sure, that type of search works fine, but it only scratches the surface of what IMDB offers. Buried, deep (and I mean deep) within the IMBD web site is this amazing Power Search page search interface that can help you find an incredible amount of movie/TV info within seconds. I learned about this interface when a news librarian asked on a listserv I monitor to come up with a solid list of movies filmed in Denver. IMDB got me a list in about 10 seconds. Specifically, I went to the Power Search page, and in section two, entered Denver in the "location" field and got nearly 200 matches. A perfect list? Probably not, but no reference tool is 100 percent accurate. Sure, I could have gone to Yahoo, MSN, or Google and started searching and searching but they aren't the best tool for this type of specific reference request. This IMDB interface understood the context of my search was about TV and movies and only that. I probably could have called Denver or the Colorado Film Commission to get a list. Well, that's true, but I'm not sure everyone would think to do that and heck, this was easier and faster. Plus, this interface offers many more options. How about comedy movies that filmed in Denver between 1970-1980 and were rated R? No problem! (There were four, by the way, including that Clint Eastwood classic, Every Which Way But Loose . By the way, this is not the only other specialty search interface the IMDB offers. Another favorite is the Name Search/People Working Together database. Just enter names and see if they've appeared or worked together. For example: How many movies (if any) have Gene Hackman and James Gandolfini been in together? Put both of those names in the "Names" box, click "Start Name Search," and a new page loads with both actors listed. Check the boxes next to their names, then click the "Look up joint ventures" button. Back comes the answer: Crimson Tide (1995) Get Shorty (1995) Mexican, The (2001) Have fun! First, I chose my whore from the Internet rather than from the Moscow Times. I chose this issue's whore, Galina, through omen.ru (I prefer publichouse.ru for its picture-heavy convenience). She wasn't the best looking girl or the youngest, but she was the most voluptuous in my brief search. I've been on a steady diet of heavy pain killers and celibacy for over a week now. Pain killers cancel out celibacy and when you throw in age and general exhaustion, you get a flaccid unit. The anketa claimed that Galina is "gypersexualnaya," and I was curious to find out what hypersexual means to a lying pimp. I called the whore's number and ordered her for delivery as if she was a Pepperoni Supreme from Jack's. If you go to her apartment, the price is $50; for delivery, the minimum order is two hours for 2500 rubles. I met Galina out in front of my podezd, took her upstairs, poured her some Montenegrin wine, and tried coaxing her into talking. She had one of those rough village accents, phrases lipped and words slurred, almost like a train horn or a wildebeest: "Nu chto-zhe!...Nu..." "Rooo! Mroooo!" She came to Moscow from a village in southeastern Ukraine about six months ago. "There's no money in Ukraine, nothing at all," she said. "Kuchma made a real mess of it. That's what we're stuck with. If I wanted money I had to get out." "Couldn't you do anything there?" "Do what? There's nothing. In the best case, if you run your own business, you can make up to 1000 rubles a month (about $33 dollars). That's if you're successful. There's nothing at all." She wanted me to talk about California. Village whores want to hear that there's a happy place, a hope. So I told her all about the beaches, the Santa Cruz Mountains, the horses and apricot orchards. "Have you been with an American before?" I asked her. "Just yesterday," she laughed shyly. "But he hated Moscow and Russia. All he talked about was how he wanted to leave." I moved the topic back to Ukraine. "You can't even get health care," she told me. "My brother got into a horrible car accident. Broke his legs in four places, had internal bleeding. One day I go to the hospital to visit him - we went every day - and he's doing worse. I ask the nurse what's wrong. She says, 'We ran out of syringes. We have the medicine but no syringes.' It was blackmail. I had to go buy them all myself downstairs in the hospital apteka. She was ready to let him suffer to make me buy them." "What if you don't have money and you're in the hospital?" "They put you aside in a separate ward and let you die." She said that she hadn't had any bad experiences as a whore. A friend from her village helped bring Galina out and set her up. I asked her how much longer she'd do it. "I don't know. No more than a few months ahead. But I'll stop. I know some girls who are married and they keep working as prostitutes. Their husbands even know. I have one friend, married. Her husband has his business, she has hers. I can't imagine that, working through the night, then coming home to your husband and getting in bed." "Maybe he doesn't love her," I said. "He does, he just doesn't care." "Are you married?" "No," she said. "Are you really gypersexualnaya?" "That's just an ad." I gave her a towel and sent her into the shower. She entered my bedroom; I pulled the towel off. Her body was better than I'd expected: thin waist, thick bones built for the steppes. Her ass was meaty in a good way, her breasts were large, the nipples awkward. In a year, she'd be unfuckable. She tried to put some weird village condom on me with her mouth, the first trick every whore learns. It wouldn't go. It was tight and I was as flaccid as, well, the condom. She tried blowing me again; I got to about a 30 degree angle, but lost it when she tried mouth-applicating the condom. "Let's lie down a minute," I suggested. I was in the mood for voluptuous. I told her she was soft (myagkii) and she got offended. "Soft is what you call a pillow. My flesh is gentle (nezhnii)." After some 20 minutes of determined body and hand pressure, I was able to achieve enough wood. I got on top of her and slowly wriggled my way inside...and nearly blew within seconds. That would have been funny if she was a girl I'd picked up from a bar, but I wanted my money's worth. So I pulled her on top of me and let her ride me while I thought about the horrible TV interview I'd given earlier that afternoon to the Kultura channel, all the embarrassing things I'd said. I yelped once or twice -- she must have thought it was from excitement. The panic helped me last about five minutes, and then the fun 'n' games were over. Zip! Sorry. Afterwards, she admitted she had a child. I'm not sure why she admitted it -- maybe it was too obvious from her breast structure: large nipples, large erasers. "Where's the husband?" I asked. "He left, the bastard." "You don't know where to?" "No. Just left. Doesn't care about feeding the baby, about giving her clothes, medicine. Just left, with no conscience." Welp, I thought, at least he can sleep well knowing he's just produced another whore. I know I will.
