In the past couple of weeks thier have been several scandals if you will, each one bringing to light the almost distorted scence of morality preasent on the YULA boys campus (The 9th grade cheating incident comes to mind). However today I would like to discuss an incident i witnessed first hand. During Mincha time I witnessed torture in the worst degree. I witnessed the tears of the tortured, and i saw the smile on the face of the tourcheres. Both were equally as haunting. However I feel I may be getting ahead of myself, so allow me to start from the begining. After second mod i headed over to the blue picnic tabels near the lunch room to quickly complete that days math home work. As you very well know after 2nd mod was mincha...no i was not intentionally ditching mincha for I planned to go in to the beis midrash as soon as i completed my math homework, however what i saw i felt i needed to watch, if not out of disgust, then in order to relate the occurences over to the YULA student body. As I was sitting doing my homework, I overheard two sophmores decide that now would be a good time to go "trash a freshman" (make note that these kids are probably two of the most obese kids in the school...hence insecurities) They started with one freshman...it was just them, i didn't find it funny, but what ever he didn't really fit in the trash can and he didnt seem to get hurt. However, as word spread around the yard that people were trashing freshman it was as if every insecure kid in the school came out of hiding for the event. Now all trashing of freshman i feel is bordering on some sort of evil...but allow me to tell you what happened to the last freshy they trashed... I don't know the freshman well, acttualy I really don't know him at all. He contributed to the litterary journal, and he seems to be a nice kid. I have heard that the kids parents are divorced, but this is besides the fact...the point is he is a kid who never did anything to anyone... This freshman is heading towards the sephardi beit midrash to daven, when the mob (litterlly 20 people) pick him up and begin to drag him. Now he resists, everyone just laughs. LAUGHTER!!!!!! Has anyone ever heard of a little town called Littelon Colorado?!?!?!?! I mean come on!!!!!! He continues to scream for them to let him go, but they refuse, then they place him in the trash can, head first. Kids then begin punching him, and kicking the trash can. I hear, "He probably lives there anyway." Punching, taungting, kicking etc. Once the kid finnaly manages to get himself out of the trash can I see tears in his eyes. People are still pushing him, and laughing, some people even try to stick him back into the trash can. Everyone around me, even those who didn't participate admit that it was pretty funny. Long before the advent of Christianity, plants and trees that remained green all year had a special meaning for people in the winter. Just as people today decorate their homes during the festive season with pine, spruce, and fir trees, ancient peoples hung evergreen boughs over their doors and windows. In many countries it was believed that evergreens would keep away witches, ghosts, evil spirits, and illness. In the Northern hemisphere, the shortest day and longest night of the year falls on December 21 or December 22 and is called the winter solstice. Many ancient people believed that the sun was a god and that winter came every year because the sun god had become sick and weak. They celebrated the solstice because it meant that at last the sun god would begin to get well. Evergreen boughs reminded them of all the green plants that would grow again when the sun god was strong and summer would return. The ancient Egyptians worshipped a god called Ra, who had the head of a hawk and wore the sun as a blazing disk in his crown. At the solstice, when Ra began to recover from the illness, the Egyptians filled their homes with green palm rushes which symbolized for them the triumph of life over death. Early Romans marked the solstice with a feast called the Saturnalia in honor of Saturn, the god of agriculture. The Romans knew that the solstice meant that soon farms and orchards would be green and fruitful. To mark the occasion, they decorated their homes and temples with evergreen boughs. In Northern Europe the mysterious Druids, the priests of the ancient Celts, also decorated their temples with evergreen boughs as a symbol of everlasting life. The fierce Vikings in Scandinavia thought that evergreens were the special plant of the sun god, Balder. Germany is credited with starting the Christmas tree tradition as we now know it in the 16th century when devout Christians brought decorated trees into their homes. Some built Christmas pyramids of wood and decorated them with evergreens and candles if wood was scarce. It is a widely held belief that Martin Luther, the 16th-century Protestant reformer, first added lighted candles to a tree. Walking toward his home one winter evening, composing a sermon, he was awed by the brilliance of stars twinkling amidst evergreens. To recapture the scene for his family, he erected a tree in the main room and wired its branches with lighted candles. Most 19th-century Americans found Christmas trees an oddity. The first record of one being on display was in the 1830s by the German settlers of Pennsylvania, although trees had been a tradition in many German homes much earlier. In 1659, the General Court of Massachusetts enacted a law making any observance of December 25 (other than a church service) a penal offense; people were fined for hanging decorations. That stern solemnity continued until the 19th century, when the influx of German and Irish immigrants undermined the Puritan legacy. In 1846, the popular royals, Queen Victoria and her German Prince, Albert, were sketched in the Illustrated London News standing with their children around a Christmas tree. Unlike the previous royal family, Victoria was very popular with her subjects, and what was done at court immediately became fashionable—not only in Britain, but with fashion-conscious East Coast American Society. The Christmas tree had arrived. By the 1890s Christmas ornaments were arriving from Germany and Christmas tree popularity was on the rise around the U.S. It was noted that Europeans used small trees about four feet in height, while Americans liked their Christmas trees to reach from floor to ceiling. The early 20th century saw Americans decorating their trees mainly with homemade ornaments, while the German-American sect continued to use apples, nuts, and marzipan cookies. Take it away, Brian... "...Covering the Velvet Underground song "Heroin" for the movie "Factory Girl" has made me rethink how I approach music, it at least gives validation to an already known fact: music does not need to be sober. By "sober" I mean perfect, tight, or in the case of most modern rock music, uptight. Working on this project with Pat was a blast. There was no premeditated plan, no rehearsal, there was barely even a discussion of how to approach this seven minute ride. I was a bit nervous going into it because the song still needed to be approved by the film's makers, who were coming to the studio to meet us and probably also to see that their investment was not in vain. As far as I know they are satisfied and haven't changed their minds. No matter anyway because the lessons learned and the experience of recording with Pat proved to be invaluable. We started at ten in the morning and ended up using the fourth of fifth take. I really wanted to have a good version of the song to play the producers of the film before they arrived at two. We kept my tracking guitar and I re-sung the song trying to mimic Lou Reeds' phrasing word for word. Just as I finished they arrived and I was sweating bullets nervously waiting for approval. They seemed genuinely pleased and the only concerns at that time were that the song broke into a beat, which was different than the drumming of the Velvets' drummer Mo Tucker. Tucker did have an amazing feel, but she was no Pat, and Pat pulled out an "Only In Dreams" type crescendo that I think makes that aspect of the song better. Later, I got a call from the director telling me to re-sing the song using my own phrasing, "just go for it", he said. I did just that and threw in a little Dylan for good measure. My reservation going into this was that no matter how good it turned out, criticism would soon follow. You can't attempt a rock classic (especially a cult band like the Velvets) and not get a few sneers. But the important thing here is that maybe we might help turn a new generation onto this amazing art rock band and change the perspectives of a few unknowing listeners. If your music has steered too far from the aesthetic of the Velvet Underground you have to ask yourself, "What the hell am I trying to do?"..." -Brian ...The CFNY "Ongoing History Of New Music" episode from November featuring the story of Rivers is online for your streaming pleasure here . Mixed emotions all around. An awesome sense of triumph and success mixed with the sad goodbyes and the mystery of what the future holds. As Rivers returns to school in the spring and everyone takes care of personal business (some pretty majorly cool stuff!) for a while, yet continues to work towards a musical future nonetheless, only time will tell when the weezer machine will get back into full gear. Its not going to be entirely quiet around the weezer hood, not by a long shot. Everyone is planning on writing music, and indeed a good deal of songs have been already created while the band was still on tour this fall. Pat's even building a new home studio to better work on music. Also Brian and Pat are going to be recording a cover version of The Velvet Underground's "Heroin" and will actually be appearing in the in-production film "Factory Girl" about the 60's Andy Warhol scene, performing the song. And around these weezer.com parts, updates, overhauls, fresh stuff and a few suprises are on the horizon. (Its no secret that the site has some neglected corners that need a serious dusting off - this type of work and more is in the works). Im also happy to say that it looks like Santa will indeed be bringing you a present or 2 this year - but its not clear when exactly this will arrive in your, uh, digital chimneys - asap, of course, but its doubtful youll see anything on the morn of 12/25.
